Vortic Watch Co. builds one-of-a-kind wristwatches around restored antique American pocket-watch movements. The original movement, dial, and hands provide the historic core; a newly made case adapts it for the wrist. The 3D-printed-case description reflects the brand’s early models, not the whole of its current manufacturing: Vortic now describes both 3D-printed titanium and CNC-machined bronze and titanium cases.
How a Vortic watch combines old and new
Vortic’s American Artisan Series uses original movements, dials, and hands from vintage American pocket watches dating from the 1880s through the 1950s. The company says it restores and tests each movement before casing it, then hand-assembles the watch in its Northern Colorado workshop. The result is not simply a new watch styled to look antique: its timekeeping mechanism and other central components come from an older pocket watch, while the case is purpose-made for wrist wear. Vortic’s series information describes the construction and movement range.
Vortic’s company history traces the project to metal 3D-printed prototypes developed for a university project. The company describes reverse-engineering antique parts to create a case that accommodates the pocket-watch movement.
Are Vortic’s cases still 3D-printed?
Some are, but 3D printing is not the complete current manufacturing story. Vortic’s current series information lists 3D-printed titanium as well as CNC-machined bronze and titanium. It also describes features including water-resistant design, milled case backs, and updated construction. Vortic’s account of its current machine shop says a Haas VM2 makes watch cases and presents machine-made cases as a development from the 3D-printed models produced for Kickstarter. That account helps explain why older coverage may describe the watches differently from current listings: the manufacturing approach has evolved. What did the original 2016 article report?
Monochrome Watches published its early report on December 5, 2016. It described cases made using metal 3D printing, with reported diameters of 42–51 mm, and listed starting prices at that time. The report names American movement makers including Waltham, Illinois Watch Company, and Elgin. They illustrate the heritage of the early collection; do not assume that any specific current listing uses one of those makers without checking its movement details.

Can I turn a family pocket watch into a wristwatch?
Vortic invites owners to ask about converting a pocket watch they already own, including a family heirloom. The company says it treats each such project individually. Its public information does not set a universal price, turnaround time, eligibility rule, or guarantee that a particular movement can be converted. Why are the watches one of a kind?
The supply of suitable antique movements is limited, and each one must be restored and fitted to a new case. Vortic says that constraint limits production to a couple hundred American Artisan watches per year. Its homepage features individual “Watch of the Day” examples, underscoring that these are not uniform, mass-produced watches.
What the Hamilton lawsuit did—and did not—decide
Vortic’s use of antique branded components drew a trademark dispute with Hamilton International. The case concerned Vortic Lancaster watches incorporating restored antique Hamilton movements and dials. On September 14, 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed the district court judgment. The opinion recounts the finding that Vortic’s branding and disclosures made clear that the new watch was a Vortic product incorporating restored original Hamilton components. That result is specific to the watches and record before the courts. It should not be read as a blanket resolution of every trademark, restoration, resale, or customer-owned conversion involving an antique branded movement.
