The key distinction is scope: ISO 3159 chronometer testing applies to the movement, while METAS Master Chronometer testing assesses the completed watch against additional requirements.
What does “chronometer” mean on a watch?
“Chronometer” refers to a watch or movement that has met the requirements of a named testing program or standard. It is not simply another word for a watch that keeps time, and the label is meaningful only when you know who set or verified the criteria and what was tested.
ISO 3159:2009 defines categories, a test program, and minimum requirements for wrist chronometers with spring-balance oscillators. ISO’s standard page identifies the 2009 edition. For its explanation of the standard, METAS says an ISO 3159 chronometer movement must have an average daily rate deviation between -4 and +6 seconds per day. This is a movement-level figure, not a prediction of an individual watch’s rate on someone’s wrist. METAS explains the distinction.
What does a certified rate range tell you?
A rate range describes the permitted result under the applicable test procedure. The ISO 3159 range cited by METAS allows both losses and gains: from four seconds slow to six seconds fast per day, on average during the specified movement test. It is not a claim that every certified watch will run at one fixed rate in every position, temperature, or wearing pattern.

The anti-magnetic design helps protect your watch movement from magnetic interference and supports accurate performance over time.
- Dual Power Supply with Adjustable Pillow - Power this automatic watch winder with a USB-C cable or 2 AA batteries not included for flexible use at home or while traveling. The adjustable pillow is designed to fit a wide range of watch sizes, making it suitable for both men’s and women’s watches.
- Preset Rotation Cycle for Balanced Winding - This watch winder operates in a preset cycle of clockwise rotation for 2 minutes, rest for 6 minutes, counterclockwise rotation for 2 minutes, and rest for 6 minutes. This balanced rotation pattern helps keep your automatic watch wound while avoiding unnecessary continuous movement. For best results, manually wind the crown 20 to 40 turns before placing your watch in the winder to help prevent stoppage.
- Stylish Gift for Watch Lovers - With its modern design and practical function, this single watch winder makes a thoughtful gift for watch lovers, collectors, husbands, fathers, and friends. It is a great choice for birthdays, anniversaries, Father’s Day, Christmas, and other special occasions.
Certification is evidence that defined criteria were met in the certification process. The published figures do not establish the exact daily rate for a particular owner, nor do they establish the performance of a serviced vintage watch. A real-world result can differ from a test result; these sources do not provide an owner-specific forecast.
How does METAS Master Chronometer differ from ISO 3159?
The principal difference is what goes through testing. ISO 3159 chronometer testing concerns the movement. METAS Master Chronometer testing is performed on the completed watch under METAS-N001, with a stated rate requirement of 0 to +5 seconds per day: the allowed range is non-negative. METAS also lists testing for accuracy under influencing factors, power reserve, and water resistance. Its program description identifies factors including temperature, positions, and magnetisation; Tudor’s explanation also lists resistance to magnetic fields.

- Safe Meets Stylish: This watch winder comes with a lock for security and a soft velvet lining to protect your watch from scratches. Its PU leather exterior adds a sophisticated touch to your space
In short, the METAS label communicates more than a movement-rate result. It indicates that the finished watch was assessed against the program’s additional requirements as well. For the criteria and certification-body description, see METAS’s watch certification page and Tudor’s overview of METAS certification.

| Label or program | What is tested | Published rate information in the cited source | Other relevant detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 3159 chronometer, as described by METAS | Movement | Average daily rate deviation from -4 to +6 seconds per day (METAS’s explanation) | ISO’s page identifies ISO 3159:2009 and its scope as wrist chronometers with spring-balance oscillators. |
| METAS Master Chronometer | Completed watch | 0 to +5 seconds per day under METAS-N001 (METAS) | METAS lists accuracy under influencing factors, power reserve, and water resistance; Tudor also lists magnetic-field resistance. |
| Rolex Superlative Chronometer | Rolex describes COSC movement testing followed by assessment of the finished watch | Exact current finished-watch tolerance: not stated in the cited Rolex page | Rolex describes its own sequence; the cited account does not establish a rate figure to compare directly with METAS. |
| Tudor Manufacture Calibre internal standard | Manufacturer’s internal standard for Manufacture Calibre models | -2 to +4 seconds per day (Tudor) | This is a Tudor-specific internal standard, not an independent certification. |
The Rolex sequence is described on Rolex’s precision page. Tudor’s comparison of its internal standard and COSC appears in its METAS certification explainer. Those manufacturer descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable independent certifications: the tester, scope, and stated criteria differ.

How to evaluate an accuracy claim before buying
- Identify the program. Look for the named standard or certification, rather than relying on “accurate” or “chronometer” alone.
- Check the test subject. A movement-only test and a completed-watch test answer different questions.
- Read the range precisely. Note whether the limits allow both gains and losses, and whether the figure is an average daily rate or another measure.
- Check for other tested properties. Do not assume a rate certification also assesses water resistance, power reserve, magnetism, or other performance factors.
- Treat the result as test evidence, not a personal guarantee. The cited certification descriptions do not specify the exact rate your individual watch will keep in your routine.
