A study of 22 commercially available watch bands found fluorine above 1% in 15 samples and detected PFHxA, a type of PFAS, in 9. These lab results raise a question about potential exposure but do not show how much chemical transfers to skin during wear or establish that a watch band causes harm.
The study by Alyssa Wicks, Heather D. Whitehead, and Graham F. Peaslee examined bands from multiple brands and price points. The American Chemical Society (ACS) summarized the findings in December 2024; the study appeared in a 2025 issue of Environmental Science & Technology Letters.
What the watch-band study found
The researchers screened surfaces for total fluorine using particle-induced gamma-ray emission spectroscopy, then used solvent extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to test for 20 targeted PFAS. Six bands also received a direct total oxidative precursor assay (dTOP).
| Finding | Study result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bands with surface fluorine above 1% | 15 of 22 | Study authors, 2025 |
| Bands with detectable PFHxA | 9 of 22 | ACS summary, 2024 |
| PFHxA concentration | Median nearly 800 ppb; one sample exceeded 16,000 ppb. The journal abstract reports a range from below the detection limit to 16,662 ng/g. | ACS summary, 2024; study authors, 2025 |
| Bands advertised as fluoroelastomer | All 13 tested contained fluorine | ACS summary, 2024 |
| Bands not advertised as fluoroelastomer | Two of nine tested contained fluorine | ACS summary, 2024 |
The study also found more fluorine in tested bands costing over $30 than in those under $15. This was an observation in a small sample, not a reliable price-based screening rule or a market-wide finding. The study did not provide verified sample-by-sample results tied to named retail models in the sources reviewed here.

What fluoroelastomer and PFAS mean
Fluoroelastomers are fluorinated polymers. The study describes shorter-chain PFAS as having historically been used as surfactants during polymerization. PFAS is a broad class of chemicals; detecting fluorine alone does not identify every compound in a product. The researchers detected PFHxA in solvent extracts from some bands.
Laboratory extraction is not the same as ordinary wear. The study did not measure chemical transfer into sweat, absorption through skin, or the amount a person might take in while wearing a band.
Does this mean smartwatch bands are dangerous?
The study does not establish that. It investigated product chemistry, not wearer exposure or health outcomes. The ACS summary reports that researchers do not currently understand how readily PFHxA transfers into skin or what health effects it might pose in this context. The authors call for more comprehensive PFHxA exposure research, including dermal absorption.
Do not treat the measured concentration in a solvent extract as an absorbed dose, or the findings from 22 bands as representative of every band or brand. The evidence supports describing some tested bands as a potential source that merits further study.

How to choose a replacement band more carefully
The study team’s consumer recommendation, as reported by ACS, was to consider silicone bands and, for a higher-priced band, read the description and avoid products listed as fluoroelastomer. This is a precautionary suggestion, not proof that every silicone band is PFAS-free or that a specific retail product has been tested.
| What to check | Why it matters | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility with your exact watch model | Connector, case size, and band length need to fit. | Compatibility says nothing about chemical composition. |
| Material named in the product description | Specific disclosure is more useful than vague terms such as “premium rubber.” Look for “fluoroelastomer” or “FKM” if you want to avoid that stated material. | A material description is not independent PFAS testing. |
| Price | Compare the purchase options that fit your needs. | The study’s price observation is not a general safety rule. |
If considering a silicone smartwatch replacement band, check the seller-stated material and confirm compatibility. Neither the material label nor the study verifies that a particular product is PFAS-free.
A “PFOA-free” claim also does not establish that a product contains no other PFAS: PFOA is one compound, not the whole class.
What the study cannot tell consumers
- How much PFHxA transfers into sweat during normal wear.
- How much, if any, is absorbed through skin.
- Whether wearing a particular band causes a health effect.
- Whether a named brand or model contains PFHxA without verified sample-specific results.
Those unanswered questions are why the findings should be taken seriously without being overstated. Better exposure research and clearer product descriptions would help consumers make more informed choices.

Do all smartwatch bands contain PFAS?
No. The study tested 22 bands, not the whole market. It found fluorine in all 13 tested bands advertised as fluoroelastomer and in two of nine bands without that description. These sample results do not establish what is in every band or brand.

Can PFAS from a watch band get into your skin?
The study did not measure transfer during wear or absorption through skin. The ACS summary says those questions remain unresolved.
Should I replace my fluoroelastomer band?
The study does not show that you need to discard a band or that wearing one causes harm. If you prefer a precautionary option, read product descriptions and consider a clearly described alternative such as silicone, while remembering that a material label is not proof of PFAS-free content.
Does “PFOA-free” mean a band is PFAS-free?
No. PFOA is one PFAS compound; a PFOA-free claim does not establish that a product contains no other PFAS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe bottom line
In a sample of 22 watch bands, researchers found surface fluorine above 1% in 15 and PFHxA in 9. The study identifies a potential exposure source, but does not measure exposure from wearing a band or demonstrate harm. If choosing a replacement, check the stated material and compatibility, and do not treat price or a material claim as independent chemical testing.
