Apple says pausing preserves your Activity award streak, and its current support guide documents pauses of up to 90 days. Training Load adds context about recent workouts, but it is separate from the rings.
What changed in Activity Rings?
Apple announced watchOS 11 on June 10, 2024, and released it on September 16, 2024. Its main change to Activity Rings was flexibility: instead of applying the same target every day, you can tailor goals to your week and take a break without the same pressure to protect an award streak. Apple’s announcement introduced these controls alongside Training Load.
Set different goals for different weekdays
You can schedule individual ring goals by day. That lets you set, for example, a higher Move and Exercise target on training days and a lower target on a planned recovery day. It is not one weekly “easy” or “hard” setting: the goals can vary across the days of the week.
Change a goal for today
A one-day change is distinct from changing your recurring daily target or weekly schedule. Choose the option for today when you only need a temporary adjustment; choose the daily-goal or schedule controls when you want the change to continue. If a goal seems not to have “stuck,” check which type of change you selected.

Pause rings for a break
For illness, injury, travel, or a planned recovery block, you can pause Activity Rings rather than lowering a goal and still being expected to meet it. Apple’s current support guide allows a selected or custom pause of up to 90 days. The launch announcement described pauses of a day, week, month, or longer; the later support guide gives the specific 90-day maximum. See Apple’s current instructions for changing goals and pausing rings.
How to schedule goals by weekday
On Apple Watch
- Open the Activity app.
- Scroll to an Activity Ring and tap Change Goals.
- Choose Change Daily Goal, then tap the goal-type control in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Schedule.
- Adjust the target for each day, then tap Set Schedule.
On iPhone
- Open the Fitness app and tap the Activity Rings.
- Scroll down and tap Change Goals.
- Tap the edit control beside the ring you want to change and choose the daily-goal option.
- Tap Schedule, adjust the values by weekday, and confirm.
Apple can also send a weekly performance notification on Mondays and suggest targets based on previous performance. Menu wording and placement may vary by language, region, and software version; follow the control for setting a recurring schedule rather than the one-day option. What pausing preserves—and what it does not promise
Apple says pausing does not interrupt your award streak. That specific assurance should not be read as a promise that every record, competition result, workout statistic, or other streak is preserved, or that a paused day is recorded as a completed workout. Pausing is a way to suspend the ring requirement for a period; lowering a goal still leaves an activity target to meet.
Training Load is context, not a fourth ring
Activity Rings answer whether you met that day’s movement targets. Training Load instead compares workout intensity and duration over the previous seven days with your prior 28-day training pattern. Apple presents the result on a scale from well below to well above your usual load. It also describes workout effort ratings from 1 to 10, with effort estimated automatically for popular cardio workouts and adjustable by the user. Apple’s Training Load guide explains the comparison.

Training Load is based on recorded workouts and Apple’s estimates, so missing or incomplete workout data can make the picture less complete. It is not a medical assessment, a direct measure of recovery, or a definitive injury-risk or readiness score. Closing every ring does not necessarily mean your recent workout load is low; an incomplete ring on a rest day does not by itself mean the rest day was a mistake.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did not change
The familiar three-ring framework remains: Move tracks active calories or the corresponding movement target, Exercise tracks exercise minutes, and Stand tracks standing or movement hours. Apple did not add a control in watchOS 11 to replace the core rings with arbitrary metrics such as steps, distance, or sleep. The activity experience can differ for wheelchair users; Apple’s design guidance describes how the rings adapt, including wheelchair pushes contributing to Move. Apple’s Activity Rings design guidance outlines the system.

Which control should you use?
- Schedule goals when your week has predictable variation, such as harder training days and a lighter Sunday.
- Change today’s goal when one unusual day calls for a temporary adjustment but you want to keep your regular plan.
- Pause rings for a temporary break such as illness, injury, travel, or an uncertain recovery period.
- Revisit your baseline goals if they are consistently unrealistic. Customizing targets should make them appropriate to your routine, not simply easier by default.
For people with structured training, changing schedules, or a tendency to exercise mainly to protect a streak, these controls address a real limitation of a rigid daily target. They do not turn rings into a training plan: use them as daily behavior goals, and treat Training Load as a separate view of recent recorded workouts.
Compatibility and version context
At its September 2024 launch, watchOS 11 supported Apple Watch Series 6 or later paired with iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. Those are the original release requirements, not a guarantee of current compatibility in 2026; later watchOS versions may have different requirements and revised menus. Apple’s release announcement lists the original compatibility details. watchOS 11 is a 2024 feature set, not Apple’s newest operating system generation as of 2026.
