Wear OS 5 is Google’s smartwatch platform based on Android 14; Google named the Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra as its first watches. One UI 6 Watch is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch software experience, with an update announced for specified older Galaxy Watch models. Eligibility for the update does not mean every feature works on every watch, phone, or in every market.
Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 Watch: what is the difference?
| Name | What it is | Confirmed detail |
|---|---|---|
| Wear OS 5 | Google’s underlying smartwatch platform | Based on Android 14. |
| One UI 6 Watch | Samsung’s Galaxy Watch software experience | Samsung announced it for newer and specified previous Galaxy Watch generations. |
Google’s Android Developers announcement identifies Wear OS 5 as Android 14-based and names the Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra as the first watches powered by it. Samsung’s rollout announcement describes One UI 6 Watch features and the older models included in its update plan.
What’s new in Wear OS 5?
For readers, the clearest confirmed Wear OS 5 change in Google’s announcement is the next iteration of Watch Face Format. Google says the format gives developers more options for expressive, efficient watch faces. The Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra launched with support for third-party faces built using that format.
Watch Face Format is a compatibility consideration, not a guarantee that every existing or legacy watch face will work. Check the face’s current support and the specific watch before relying on it.

| Feature | What Samsung describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Score | A score using information including sleep, activity, sleeping heart rate, and sleeping heart-rate variability. | Insights require a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone, Samsung Health, and a Samsung account. |
| Sleep tracking | Additional information such as movement during sleep, sleep latency, heart rate, and respiratory rate. | Feature availability may vary by model and software support. |
| Sleep Apnea | An on-demand software feature intended to detect signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. | For adults 22 or older; tracks sleep twice over ten days. It is not intended for people already diagnosed and does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a qualified clinician. Availability requires a compatible watch and phone. |
| Race | Compares an outdoor run or cycle with a previous effort on the same route. | Samsung’s feature terms specify route and previous-record conditions. |
| Workout Routine | Lets users combine exercises into personalized routines. | Availability depends on the supported watch and software. |
| Suggested replies | AI-generated suggested responses. | Requires a compatible Galaxy smartphone and Samsung account. |
| Double Pinch Gestures | Can answer calls, dismiss alarms, take photos, and control other functions. | Must be enabled; Samsung says it requires pairing with a Galaxy phone running One UI 6.1.1 or newer. |
| Watch faces | Samsung cites Simple Digital and Ultra Info Board as examples. | These are Samsung software offerings, not a universal Wear OS 5 feature. |
Samsung’s feature and rollout announcement describes these experiences. Its U.S. materials provide additional limitations for Energy Score and Sleep Apnea and for phone compatibility. Samsung stated in its 2024 announcement that Galaxy AI features would be free until the end of 2025; that time-limited statement does not establish current terms.

Check your watch and feature compatibility
- Identify the exact model. Check the model name in the watch settings or its companion app.
- Check the installed software. Use the watch’s software information screen; a model being named in an announcement does not verify its current installed version.
- Check Samsung’s rollout and support information. Samsung cautions that availability and support may vary by market, carrier, model, and paired smartphone.
- Check phone and account requirements for each feature. Energy Score and other Galaxy-specific experiences may require a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health, or a Samsung account.
- Check health-feature limitations. For Sleep Apnea, confirm local availability and read Samsung’s intended-use limitations; it is not a diagnosis or substitute for clinical care.
- Check watch-face support. Confirm that faces you rely on support the relevant watch and Watch Face Format where needed.
