An aluminum bezel insert makes a dive watch lighter, easy to produce in vivid colors, and likely to show scratches and gradual fading. Stainless steel is the more forgiving choice when a bezel takes a sharp knock and can often be refinished. Ceramic stays crisp, resists everyday scratches, ultraviolet fading and corrosion, but its hardness comes with greater brittleness in a concentrated impact. These materials mainly change weight, aging, appearance and serviceability; they do not determine a watch’s water-resistance rating by themselves.

| Ceramic | Long-lasting color and a clean, scratch-resistant appearance | High-tech ceramic is about 1,250 Vickers (HV), approximately five times harder than stainless steel, according to Bremont’s 2026 comparison | Oct 2026 |
What does a dive-watch bezel insert actually do?
The insert is the graduated disc that carries the minute scale, usually inside a rotating bezel ring. On a conventional dive watch, the ring turns in one direction only, so an accidental knock can shorten the indicated remaining time rather than make a diver believe more time remains. The scale and unidirectional mechanism are the safety system; the insert material is only one part of that system.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Rolex calls the graduated insert an “essential technical feature” for monitoring time underwater. Its Submariner uses a 60-minute Cerachrom insert, yet the insert is separate from the case, click mechanism, gasket and rotating ring. A ceramic or aluminum disc cannot compensate for a damaged gasket, poorly serviced crown or case that was not engineered and tested for the stated pressure.
How does an aluminum bezel age?
Aluminum is chosen when light weight, color flexibility and visible character matter more than a permanently pristine surface. OMEGA describes aluminum as “a truly lightweight material used for decorative components” and notes that anodization allows many colors. Anodizing creates a colored oxide layer rather than making the entire metal as hard as ceramic.

Scratches and scuffs
An aluminum insert is comparatively soft. Contact with a tank, desk edge, clasp or grit can leave a mark, and the mark may cut through the colored anodized layer. The minute numerals can remain readable while the surrounding ring develops a network of hairlines, or one concentrated hit can produce a bright gouge.
Fading and patina
Ultraviolet light, salt water and general exposure can shift an anodized color over time. The change may be gradual rather than dramatic: black can become grayish, blue can lighten, and the contrast between the insert and numerals can soften. A watch-reference glossary describes aluminum inserts as susceptible to UV and saltwater fading, while Vaer presents the resulting vintage aesthetic and patina as part of the material’s appeal. Fading is therefore not automatically a defect; it is undesirable only if you want the original color to remain uniform.

- It adds little mass to the bezel assembly, which can make a watch feel less top-heavy.
- Anodizing supports strong colors and historically familiar tool-watch designs.
- It is a normal wear component that can be replaced without replacing the entire case.
- Visible wear gives each watch a distinct timeline instead of a permanently new appearance.
When is stainless steel the better bezel material?
Stainless steel is the middle-ground option for owners who expect knocks and want the possibility of cosmetic restoration. OMEGA identifies 316L stainless steel as a conventional watchmaking material with strength, affordability and corrosion resistance suitable for diving and other high-stress use.
Impact behavior
Steel is more willing to flex or deform under a sharp, concentrated blow than ceramic. Bremont’s comparison describes steel as tolerating sharp knocks better; the trade-off is that a hard impact can leave a dent or a visible scratch. That damage is usually easier to live with structurally than a shattered brittle insert.
Refinishing and finish changes
Depending on the construction, scratches in a steel bezel or ring can often be polished or brushed out during service. Refinishing is not invisible: removing material changes edges, transitions and the original contrast between polished and brushed surfaces. A finely brushed bezel may come back with a different grain, while a polished one can lose a crisp factory profile after repeated work.

Corrosion and grade still matter
“Stainless steel” is not a single performance level. The grade, surface finishing, gasket design and how the insert is retained all affect long-term behavior. 316L resists corrosion well in normal watch use, but salt deposits should still be rinsed away and the watch should be serviced according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
What does ceramic improve, and where can it fail?
Ceramic is aimed at preserving a clean appearance. Rolex describes its Cerachrom ceramic as virtually scratchproof, unaffected in color by ultraviolet rays, chemically inert and unable to corrode. OMEGA similarly describes ceramic as highly scratch-resistant, chemically inert and non-magnetic.
Scratch, color and corrosion resistance
Routine contact with clothing, a desk or diving equipment is less likely to leave a visible mark on ceramic than on aluminum or steel. The color is intended to remain stable in sunlight, and the material does not rust or corrode. Bremont states that ceramic is “considerably more scratch resistant than stainless steel and retains its finish exceptionally well.”
Hardness is not the same as toughness
Bremont gives high-tech watch ceramic a figure of about 1,250 Vickers (HV), approximately five times the hardness of stainless steel. That hardness resists surface abrasion, but ceramic flexes less. A severe, concentrated strike against a tank, ladder or hard edge can chip or crack it where steel might dent and aluminum might gouge.
Weight and manufacturing
OMEGA describes ceramic as about two times lighter than stainless steel. That comparison applies to the material, not automatically to a complete watch: case dimensions, bracelet links, clasp and movement dominate the final wrist weight. Ceramic parts also require more specialized machining and finishing, so replacement can be more expensive and may depend on the model maker’s parts supply.

Does the bezel material change a dive watch’s water resistance?
No. The insert material alone does not set the pressure rating. Water resistance depends on the case, crystal, crown and tube, case-back construction, gaskets, assembly tolerances and service condition.
Rolex lists the Submariner at 300 metres (1,000 feet) and the Deepsea at 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), while separately describing their ceramic bezel inserts. Those ratings illustrate why the model specification, not the material name, is the relevant safety reference. Before diving, check the watch’s stated rating, crown position, gasket condition and service history. A replacement insert must also seat correctly so it cannot interfere with the rotating ring or its seals.
Which bezel is best for salt water and sunlight?
Ceramic is the strongest choice if your priority is keeping the original color and a clean surface in bright sun and repeated salt-water exposure. It is chemically inert, does not corrode and is designed to resist ultraviolet color change.
Aluminum can be used in marine environments, but rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure and expect the anodized color to age. Salt crystals and grit can accelerate visible wear. Steel is also suitable for diving when the watch is engineered for it; rinse and dry it because corrosion resistance does not mean immunity to deposits, trapped moisture or neglected gaskets.

Is ceramic worth choosing over aluminum?
Choose ceramic when preserving a crisp scale and stable color matters more than the possibility of inexpensive, characterful aging. Choose aluminum when low mass, strong color choices, historical styling and a replaceable wear surface matter more than avoiding scratches.

Can a dive-watch bezel insert be replaced?
Usually, but compatibility is model-specific and the insert is not a universal washer. Replacement listings may describe aluminum, ceramic, sapphire or steel inserts, yet the correct part must match the watch’s dimensions and retaining method.
Check these details before ordering
- Insert diameter and profile: even a small difference can prevent a flush fit or leave the scale misaligned.
- Retaining method: some inserts use adhesive, while others locate with a lip, gasket or dedicated carrier.
- Minute-track layout: the number style, lume plots and graduation must match the movement of the click ring.
- Click configuration: confirm that the insert’s indexing and the bezel’s unidirectional click positions agree.
- Material and thickness: a ceramic replacement may need different handling and tooling from an aluminum one.
Use a qualified watchmaker for removal and installation, especially if the work could disturb the bezel gasket or leave adhesive in the rotating assembly. After replacement, the bezel should turn in the intended direction, click consistently and sit level. An insert change does not by itself prove that the watch remains pressure-tight; a pressure test is the appropriate verification after work that affects seals or case components.

Scratch resistance
Ceramic leads, steel follows, and aluminum marks most readily. Steel’s scratches are usually more repairable than ceramic damage, while aluminum’s marks may be part of the desired look.

Steel is the forgiving choice for sharp knocks. Aluminum can dent or gouge but is less likely to fail in the brittle way associated with ceramic. Ceramic handles ordinary abrasion extremely well but deserves care around concentrated impacts.
Color stability
Ceramic is designed to keep its color. Anodized aluminum can fade and develop patina. Steel’s appearance changes mainly through scratches, dents and the gradual blending of polished and brushed surfaces.

Service cost and availability
Steel components are generally straightforward to refinish when the construction permits it. Aluminum inserts are familiar replaceable wear parts. Ceramic replacement can be more specialized and costly, so verify that the manufacturer or an independent parts supplier can provide the exact insert for your reference.
How should you decide before buying?
- Define your preferred aging pattern. If fading and scratches add personality, aluminum is intentional rather than compromised. If you want the scale to remain crisp, start with ceramic.
- Consider your impact environment. Frequent contact with tanks, ladders or hard equipment favors steel’s compliance. Desk wear and light equipment contact favor ceramic’s surface hardness.
- Check the complete watch, not just the insert. Confirm the stated water-resistance rating, crown and case-back design, gasket service and manufacturer instructions.
- Price the eventual repair. Ask whether the exact insert is available, how it is retained and whether replacement requires a bezel or gasket service.
- Match the visual language. Aluminum suits classic tool-watch proportions and color changes; ceramic suits a modern, precise appearance; steel emphasizes honest metal wear and serviceability.
How were these material choices evaluated?
The comparison uses the properties stated in manufacturer technical descriptions and a watch-reference glossary: surface hardness and scratch resistance, ultraviolet and salt-water stability, sharp-impact behavior, material weight, aging style and service implications. Published descriptions are not a single independent head-to-head laboratory test of every insert, so figures such as ceramic’s approximately 1,250 HV hardness and its comparison with stainless steel should be read as the named manufacturer’s specification, not a universal result for every ceramic formulation or steel grade.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an aluminum bezel fade in a few months?
There is no single timetable. UV exposure, salt water, the anodizing formula, storage and how often the watch is worn determine the rate; gradual fading is a long-term possibility rather than an expected fixed interval.
Can I polish scratches out of an aluminum insert?
Polishing usually removes more of the colored anodized layer and can make the graduation uneven. Replacing the insert is generally the cleaner repair when the marks are deep or the scale is damaged.
Does a ceramic bezel make a watch safer for diving?
No. Ceramic can preserve the scale and resist corrosion, but diving safety comes from the complete watch’s unidirectional mechanism, seals, case construction, rating and verified service condition.
What happens if a ceramic bezel chips?
A chip can compromise the insert’s appearance and may create a sharp edge or loose fragment. Have the bezel inspected and replace the insert if its seating, readability or rotation is affected; do not assume a chip is cosmetic without checking the assembly.
