Depending on the watch, phone, software and country, a smartwatch can track sleep and overnight vital signs, estimate blood oxygen, record an ECG, monitor stress and recovery, analyze workouts, and offer features such as fall detection. These tools can make health patterns easier to notice, but they provide wellness or screening information—not a clinical diagnosis.
What health information can a smartwatch track?
Smartwatches combine different sensors and software, so no single feature list applies to every model. Optical sensors can estimate measures such as heart rate and blood oxygen; temperature sensors can record wrist-temperature changes; and electrical sensors can capture heart signals for an ECG feature.
- Sleep and overnight vitals: Depending on the watch, the companion app may show sleep duration or stages alongside overnight heart rate, breathing rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and heart-rate variability (HRV).
- Stress and recovery: Some watches estimate stress or recovery using signals such as heart rate and HRV. Garmin, for example, lists stress tracking, Body Battery, respiration, sleep coaching and HRV status among its health features.
- Workout and training analysis: Many watches go beyond counting steps to record exercise sessions and offer training-oriented measures. Garmin’s health tools are especially relevant to readers comparing sleep, recovery and endurance-focused features.
- Women’s health: Some platforms offer women’s-health tools. Specific functions depend on the watch and its software.
- Body-composition estimates: Compatible Galaxy watches can provide body-composition measurements through Samsung Health Monitor.
Can a smartwatch measure ECG or blood oxygen?
ECG and rhythm checks
An ECG feature uses electrical signals to produce a heart-rhythm recording. Apple documents an ECG app that can generate a single-lead-style ECG. Garmin says its ECG app records the electrical signals that control the heartbeat and checks for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) on compatible watches. These are not interchangeable with a full clinical evaluation; check the device maker’s instructions for what a result means.
Blood oxygen estimates
Some watches use an optical sensor to estimate blood oxygen, often labeled Pulse Ox or blood oxygen. Availability varies by model and market. Apple lists blood oxygen among the measurements shown in Vitals where available; Garmin also lists Pulse Ox as a health feature. A watch estimate is not a substitute for medical testing.

How do sleep, stress and recovery features differ?
Sleep features range from a record of sleep duration to broader views that combine sleep with overnight measurements. Apple’s Vitals view includes heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and blood oxygen where available. Garmin lists sleep tracking, sleep stages, naps, sleep coaching, respiration and HRV status; its Venu 2 Plus feature page is one example of a watch offering sleep stages, Pulse Ox and stress measurements.
Stress and recovery scores are interpretations of sensor data, not direct measurements of how well-rested or stressed someone feels. Use them to spot patterns over time rather than treating a single score as a diagnosis or a precise measure of readiness.

Samsung Galaxy Watch
Samsung describes ECG recording, blood-pressure checks, sleep-apnea risk monitoring, sleep tracking and body composition on compatible devices. In the US, Samsung says Samsung Health Monitor features require a released country, a paired phone and the Samsung Health Monitor app; check its current support requirements for your location and watch.
What safety or screening alerts can a watch provide?
Fall Detection is among the safety features Apple highlights. Samsung says compatible Galaxy watches can monitor for signs of sleep apnea as well as record ECG data and check blood pressure. These capabilities are device- and region-dependent, and an alert or screening result should not be treated as a diagnosis. For feature requirements, see Apple Watch health and safety features, Garmin Health Science and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Health Monitor requirements.

How to choose the right health dashboard
- Pick the feature you will actually use. Decide whether your priority is overnight trends, ECG, training recovery, safety alerts or another specific tool.
- Check exact compatibility. Verify the watch model, software, paired phone and country against the manufacturer’s current requirements.
- Look at the companion app. Make sure its explanations and history are understandable, not just a collection of scores.
- Plan for how you wear it. If you want overnight data, consider whether the watch’s charging routine leaves it available while you sleep.
