What Casio Water-Resistance Ratings Really Mean for Swimming and Showering

Casio’s water-resistance marking is a pressure-test class, not a promise that you can dive to the printed number of metres. For regular swimming, Casio’s 10 BAR/100M class is the clearest general-purpose choice. A 20 BAR/200M model provides more headroom for surface and skin-diving activities, while a watch specifically marked DIVER’S WATCH 200M is the separate category Casio identifies for scuba diving.

Showering is less straightforward. Casio’s European activity table includes bathing, washing and showering from 5 BAR upward, but Casio’s international care guidance warns against baths, heated environments and soaps or detergents. The safest practical rule is to remove any Casio for a hot or soapy shower, never operate its buttons or crown while wet or submerged, and follow the exact model manual.

What does a Casio water-resistance number actually measure?

The number describes the pressure a watch is designed to withstand in a standardized test. Casio says its watches follow DIN 8310 and ISO 22810, and that the metre figure is a pictorial way of expressing test pressure. It is not a guarantee that the watch can be taken to that depth in real water.

A laboratory pressure test is relatively static. Swimming strokes, jumping into a pool, a wave striking the case or an impact against the water can create short pressure spikes above the static test condition. That is why a watch labelled 100M should not be interpreted as a recreational dive watch rated for 100 metres. Casio’s own wording is that its water resistance is “standard-compliant as per DIN 8310/ISO 22810.”

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Water resistance also changes with age and use. Seals harden, the case can be damaged by impacts, and opening the watch for a battery change can compromise its protection unless the case is inspected and resealed correctly.

Can I swim with a Casio 5 BAR watch?

There is a genuine regional difference in Casio’s published guidance. Casio’s European table lists 5 BAR/50M for bathing, washing and showering, but not swimming. Casio’s international FAQ and Casio America’s 50M guidance list swimming for that class. Because the same marking is interpreted differently in those materials, check the exact model manual and region-specific support page before using a 5 BAR watch in a pool.

If swimming is the main reason you are buying or choosing a watch, 10 BAR/100M is the unambiguous option in Casio’s cited guidance. It avoids relying on the 5 BAR regional interpretation.

How do Casio’s ratings compare for everyday activities?

The table below combines Casio’s activity guidance with the practical limits a wearer should apply. “Metres” are pressure-class labels, not recommended operating depths.

Case-back marking Casio activity guidance Practical interpretation Important limits
No water-resistance marking No water exposure in Casio’s Europe table; not protected against sweat or moisture. Dry-use only. Keep it away from rain, hand-washing splashes and swimming. Do not assume a splash-resistant case without a marking.
WATER RESIST or WATER RESISTANT, no BAR number Splashes and rain are listed; swimming is not. Suitable for ordinary rain and careful hand washing, not swimming or showering. Use the model manual if it gives a more specific limitation.
5 BAR/50M Europe: bathing, washing and showering, but not swimming. International and US guidance: swimming is listed. Because the published regional advice conflicts, verify the exact model. Choose 10 BAR if pool use matters. Remove it for hot or soapy showers; do not treat 50M as a dive depth.
10 BAR/100M Swimming and snorkeling; Casio America also lists poolside diving. The clearest general-purpose class for regular swimming and surface water activities. Ordinary 100M models are not automatically scuba watches.
20 BAR/200M Swimming, snorkeling and more demanding surface or skin-diving activities. Useful extra headroom for active water use when the manual permits it. An ordinary 200M model is still not the same as a designated scuba watch.
DIVER’S WATCH 200M Casio America identifies this designation for scuba diving within the marked limits. Treat it as a separate diver-watch category. Follow the diver-watch instructions and depth limits for that specific model.

Is a Casio 10 BAR/100M watch safe for swimming and snorkeling?

Casio lists swimming and snorkeling for 10 BAR/100M, making it the most straightforward recommendation for routine pool or sea swimming. It is also the sensible minimum class for readers who want one watch for daily wear, holidays and surface-water activities without relying on the 5 BAR regional discrepancy.

Snorkeling normally keeps the wearer at the surface, but swimming motion and accidental impacts still matter. Check that the crown, pushers and crystal are undamaged, close any screw-lock component as instructed, and do not use a watch whose case has recently been opened until its seals have been inspected.

Casio America lists poolside diving under 100M guidance, but that does not convert every 100M watch into scuba equipment. Compressed-air diving involves greater depth, pressure changes and equipment requirements than a poolside jump or surface swim. For scuba, look for the explicit DIVER’S WATCH 200M designation and follow that model’s limits.

What is the difference between 20 BAR/200M and a diver’s 200M watch?

Both markings indicate a higher pressure class than 10 BAR, but they are not interchangeable labels. Casio’s 20 BAR/200M guidance covers swimming, snorkeling and more demanding surface or skin-diving activities. Casio separately identifies watches marked DIVER’S WATCH 200M for scuba diving.

Therefore, the “200M” text alone is not enough to establish scuba suitability. Read the complete case-back marking, product specification and manual. If the watch is not explicitly identified as a diver’s watch, treat it as a high water-resistance everyday watch rather than scuba equipment.

Can I shower with my Casio?

Casio’s European table permits bathing, washing and showering at 5 BAR and above, but its international care guidance gives a more cautious warning: avoid baths, heated swimming pools, saunas and tasks involving soaps or detergents. Heat can affect seals, and soap or detergent can reduce water resistance or work its way into openings.

The safest consumer practice is simple:

  • Remove the watch for hot showers, baths, saunas, hot tubs and heated pools.
  • Remove it when shampoo, body wash, detergent or other soapy products will contact the case.
  • If you take a brief, cool shower with a model whose manual permits it, keep the crown and pushers untouched and dry the watch afterward.
  • When the regional guidance or your model manual is unclear, treat the watch as unsuitable for showering.

A watch that survives rain or a pool is not automatically protected from heat and chemicals. Shower advice is therefore a separate decision from swimming advice.

Can I press the buttons or crown underwater?

Do not operate buttons, the crown or other controls while the watch is wet or submerged unless the exact manual expressly says that operation is permitted. Pressing a control can move a seal or open a path for water at the moment external pressure is highest.

Set alarms, timers, chronograph functions and other modes before entering the water. If a function must be changed, leave the water, dry the watch and your hands, then operate it according to the manual. Screw-lock crowns and pushers must be fully secured before exposure.

What should I do after swimming in seawater?

Salt and residue should not be left on the case or bracelet. Rinse the watch with clean, plain water after seawater exposure, then dry it with a soft cloth. Avoid directing a high-pressure jet at the case, and do not use detergents or solvents.

Inspect the watch after an impact, a loose crown, a cracked crystal or any unusual condensation. Those signs can indicate that the seals or case have been compromised, even if the printed rating has not changed.

How often does a Casio watch need water-resistance maintenance?

Casio recommends replacing the gaskets about once every two or three years to maintain water resistance. The interval is an approximate maintenance recommendation, not a guarantee that a watch remains sealed for that entire period under all conditions.

Have battery replacement performed by the original retailer or an authorized Casio service center. Casio’s guidance links this service to a water-resistance inspection, which is important because opening the case is an opportunity to check, lubricate or replace seals and verify that the case is closing correctly.

Arrange service sooner when

  • the watch has been dropped, struck or exposed to unusual pressure;
  • the crystal fogs or condensation appears inside;
  • the crown or a pusher feels loose or no longer returns normally;
  • the case has been opened by a non-authorized repairer; or
  • the watch is approaching its next battery change and will continue to be used in water.

Until a suspected seal problem is checked, keep the watch dry. A water-resistance marking describes the case when its seals and components are in suitable condition; it is not a permanent warranty against leaks.

Which Casio rating should I choose for my activity?

Match the marking to the activity you actually perform, not to the largest number printed on a listing.

  1. Rain, occasional splashes or desk use: A watch marked WATER RESIST may be sufficient; a watch with no water-resistance marking should be kept dry.
  2. Swimming several times a week: Choose 10 BAR/100M or higher and confirm the model manual.
  3. Snorkeling and active surface water: 10 BAR/100M is the general-purpose starting point; 20 BAR/200M adds pressure headroom.
  4. Skin diving: Use a model whose manual lists the activity and observe its control and depth restrictions.
  5. Scuba diving: Select a watch explicitly marked DIVER’S WATCH 200M and follow its diver-watch instructions. Do not infer scuba suitability from “200M” alone.
  6. Hot, soapy or chemical exposure: Remove the watch regardless of whether its rating would otherwise permit swimming.

What if the rating on my watch and the online advice disagree?

Use the complete case-back marking, the manual for that reference number and the support guidance for your region. Casio’s 5 BAR advice demonstrates why a generic chart cannot replace model-specific instructions. Product listings often shorten markings to “50M” or “100M,” while the manual may specify activities, prohibited conditions or control restrictions that the short label omits.

When two instructions conflict, choose the more conservative one: avoid the activity until Casio support or an authorized service center confirms the model’s intended use. This is especially important after a battery change, case repair or visible impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find the exact water-resistance rating on my Casio?

Look at the case back for wording such as WATER RESIST, 5 BAR, 10 BAR, 20 BAR or DIVER’S WATCH 200M, then match the reference number to its instruction manual. A retailer’s shortened “50M” or “100M” description may omit important activity restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there moisture or fog under my Casio crystal?

Internal fogging means moisture has entered or condensation has formed inside the case; it is not a normal confirmation of water resistance. Keep the watch out of water and have an authorized Casio service center inspect the seals and movement promptly.

Are Casio watches safe in a hot tub?

Treat a hot tub like a heated pool or bath and remove the watch. Heat, steam and chemicals create conditions Casio cautions against even when the watch is rated for ordinary swimming.

Does a new battery reset a Casio watch’s water resistance?

No. Battery replacement does not by itself restore sealing. The case should be opened, inspected and resealed by the original retailer or an authorized Casio service center, with a water-resistance check.
