Fitbit Cardio Load estimates the cardiovascular effort you have accumulated through activity; Target Load is personalized guidance for how much Cardio Load to aim for. Google’s current Help Center describes Target Load as a weekly target, so you can balance activity and recovery across the week instead of chasing a fixed daily amount.

What is Fitbit Cardio Load?

Cardio Load is a personalized estimate of cardiovascular effort accumulated through activities that raise your heart rate. Longer and more strenuous activity tends to add more load. It is an estimate, not a raw heart-rate reading, calorie total, medical measurement, or universal performance ranking.

How Cardio Load is calculated

Google says Cardio Load uses a modified TRIMP model: TRIMP means TRaining IMPulse. The model combines exercise duration with cardiovascular intensity, and the calculation considers heart rate, age, resting heart rate, and sex. Google’s Fitbit Team describes the method as using “an exponential weighting for higher intensities.”

In practice, longer activity or activity at a higher heart rate tends to produce more load. Do not treat a particular score as equivalent to a fixed number of minutes, calories, or miles; the estimate is personalized.

Which activities contribute?

Cardio Load can accrue from everyday activities that raise your heart rate, not only workouts you start manually. Walking, cycling, running, and other supported tracked activities can contribute. Check the activity record in the app to see what has added to your load.

What is Fitbit Target Load?

Target Load is personalized guidance for the amount of Cardio Load to aim for, based on recent activity and your selected fitness goal, such as maintaining or improving cardio fitness. Google’s current Help Center describes it as a weekly target.

Think of it as a flexible guide rather than a rigid daily quota or medical threshold. Your daily effort and progress toward a weekly target may look different from day to day, leaving room for both active days and recovery.

How is Target Load personalized?

Google says the recommendation takes your recent activity and fitness goal into account. Its Help Center describes comparing recent load history across periods including the prior week and recent month. The target can therefore change as your activity history changes.

Older Fitbit community material described daily targets, including different guidance for maintaining and improving fitness. If you encounter that language, treat it as historical; follow the current app’s weekly guidance.

Do you need to hit Target Load every day?

No. The current Help Center describes a weekly target. You can distribute activity across the week in a way that suits your schedule and recovery rather than trying to reach the same amount every day.

More is not always better. Use the target as a guide, listen to your body, and take rest when needed. A score is not an instruction to exercise through fatigue or a diagnosis of your health.

How to use Cardio Load and Target Load

  1. Look at your weekly target as a flexible guide, not a daily pass-or-fail score.
  2. Check which activities contributed to your load and review your trends across days or weeks in the app.
  3. Consider how you feel and how you are recovering; rest when needed.
  4. Remember that everyday activities that raise your heart rate can contribute, even if you did not start a workout manually.
Metric What it means What not to assume
Cardio Load Estimated cardiovascular effort accumulated through activity That a higher score is always better or safer
Target Load Personalized guidance for a weekly amount of Cardio Load That you must reach the same amount every day
Heart rate Your heart’s rate at a particular time That it alone describes your overall training load

Why might my Target Load be missing or changing?

Target Load needs activity and wear history to personalize its guidance. Google’s Help Center describes a first target after seven consecutive days and nights of wearing the device, mentions two weeks for personalization, and recommends continuous wear for 28 days for the best results. These are operational guidance from Google, not a promise of one universal calibration schedule. Follow the in-app instructions and wear the device consistently.

Infrequent or erratic training may make target calculation less reliable. Heart-rate-affecting medication can also influence the estimate. If a number seems inconsistent with your effort or well-being, check device placement and the activity record, and consider your recovery rather than treating the score as a diagnosis.

What can affect Cardio Load accuracy?

Fitbit cautions that heart-rate tracking accuracy can be affected by physiology, device placement, movement, and activity type. Missing or unreliable heart-rate data can also make the estimate less representative of your effort. Medication that affects heart rate may influence the calculation.

If the number conflicts with how you feel, do not force a workout to reach it. Consider sensor fit, whether the activity was recorded correctly, and your recovery. Seek qualified advice if you have concerns about your health or exercise intensity.

Which devices support Cardio Load?

Google’s current Help Center lists Fitbit Charge 6 among the Fitbit devices that support Cardio Load, alongside other Fitbit models. Device compatibility and app requirements can change, so check Google’s current compatibility information for your specific device before relying on a particular feature. Compatibility is not a reason to replace a working device just to interpret the score.
