DLC stands for diamond-like carbon. On a watch, it is a thin carbon-based coating applied to an underlying case or bracelet—not a case material in its own right. Brands use it to create a dark finish and, depending on the particular coating system, improve resistance to wear. The name alone does not guarantee that every DLC-coated watch has the same composition or durability.
What DLC means on a watch
Diamond-like carbon is a family of carbon coatings whose properties can sit between those of diamond and graphite. It is not a layer of actual diamond. The film is deposited onto another material, such as the watch case or bracelet, so the underlying substrate remains part of the finished component. Casio, for example, describes its DLC finish as vapor-deposited on a case and/or bracelet (Casio); Citizen describes DURATECT DLC as a proprietary surface technology (Citizen, 2022).
DLC is best understood as a coating family, not a single universal recipe or specification. Composition, deposition process, substrate preparation, and layer design can differ. Some brands use names such as ADLC or proprietary labels; those names should not be treated as proof that two watches have identical coatings.
Why watchmakers use DLC
A dark surface finish
DLC is often used to give a case or bracelet a dark appearance while leaving the underlying component material in place. The exact color and finish depend on the specific treatment and watch design.

Wear resistance, with limits
Manufacturers describe particular DLC treatments as hard-wearing or scratch-resistant. Casio makes such claims for its finish, and Garmin describes ADLC on its watches as hard-wearing and scratch resistant (Garmin). These are claims about their respective products, not guarantees that every DLC coating will resist every mark.
“Scratch-resistant” does not mean scratch-proof. A coating’s performance depends on its formulation and thickness, how it was applied, the substrate and preparation, and the type of contact or impact. A hard surface can still be damaged; an impact may also affect the coating or the material beneath it.

What published hardness and wear figures can—and cannot—tell you
Figures are meaningful only in the context of the particular product and the method used to obtain them. Citizen’s 2022 release for DURATECT DLC Blue reports approximately 1,000–1,400 HV for that coating family and approximately 200 HV for stainless steel (Citizen, 2022). These are Citizen’s figures for its named treatment, not a universal specification for DLC watches. They also do not translate directly into a promise that a finished watch will never scratch.
Oerlikon Balzers lists coating thicknesses of roughly 1–4 μm across the decorative watch coating solutions shown on its page. That is an undated supplier specification for those listed solutions, not a range established for every DLC coating or watch (Oerlikon Balzers). The supplier notes that coating specifications depend on application, environment, and test conditions (Oerlikon Balzers).

Wear testing is not the same as testing a watch case for everyday scratches. ISO 18535:2016 specifies a dry ball-on-disc method for measuring friction and wear of DLC coatings; the International Organization for Standardization says the results do not apply to coated parts operating in a lubricated environment. The standard page says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current (ISO). It should not be read as a direct scratch test or as a ranking of finished watches.
How to compare DLC-coated watches
When assessing a specific model, compare the coating and the component it covers rather than relying on the acronym alone.

- Identify the coating. Check whether the maker specifies DLC, ADLC, or a named proprietary treatment. Similar labels do not establish identical chemistry or process.
- Check the substrate. Find out what the case or bracelet is made from beneath the coating. DLC is a surface film, not a substitute for that material.
- Look for model-specific evidence. Hardness or thickness figures are useful only when the brand identifies the coating and the figures apply to the watch or treatment in question.
- Check the method and attribution. Note whether a figure is a manufacturer specification, what test method it uses, and whether it measures hardness, thickness, friction, or wear. Those measures answer different questions.
- Judge the finish and claim together. Consider whether the dark appearance is what you want, while treating words such as “scratch-resistant” as qualified claims for that brand’s coating.
Numbers from different manufacturers should not be used to rank watches unless their materials, test methods, and conditions are comparable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is DLC coating worth choosing?
DLC may suit you if you want the particular dark finish and value the documented properties of the coating on a specific watch. It is less useful to choose a watch on the acronym alone: compare the named treatment, the substrate, and any model-specific data and test methods the maker publishes. Treat durability language as an indication of intended performance, not immunity from damage.
