That combination can give the chronograph pushers a mechanical-style feel and make the chronograph seconds hand snap back when reset. The name is also written “meca-quartz,” “mecaquartz” or “mecha-quartz.”
What makes a watch mechaquartz?
The defining feature is the movement’s division of work: quartz keeps the time, while a mechanical module operates the chronograph. A chronograph is a stopwatch function built into a watch, usually started, stopped and reset with pushers on the case.
The term is descriptive rather than a standardized movement category. A watch described simply as “quartz” is not necessarily mechaquartz, and a quartz watch with a smoothly moving seconds hand does not qualify on that detail alone. Look for a chronograph movement identified as mechaquartz or for a specific caliber whose documentation confirms the construction. Caliber Corner’s terminology guide notes that the label is not an official manufacturer definition.
How does a mechaquartz chronograph work?
Think of it as two jobs handled by different parts of the movement. The quartz system runs the watch’s ordinary timekeeping; the mechanical module controls the chronograph function. In Seiko examples, Time+Tide describes components including levers, hammers and wheels. Those parts help explain the more mechanical-style click of the pushers and the chronograph hand’s immediate reset.

- VK63 MECHA-QUARTZ CHRONOGRAPH: The WD1863 uses a VK63 mecha-quartz movement with a central 1/5-second chronograph hand, 60-minute counter, running small seconds and a 24-hour display. The pushers control start, stop and reset, combining quartz accuracy with crisp mechanical-style chronograph action for practical elapsed-time measurement.
- BUBBLE SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL & ALUMINUM BEZEL: The raised bubble-style sapphire crystal adds depth above the dial, while a high-clear inner AR coating helps reduce reflections. A 316L stainless steel case and bracelet provide a solid everyday build, and the fixed aluminum bezel creates a defined frame around the vintage chronograph display.
- SUPER BGW-9 BLUE LUME: BGW-9 super luminous material is applied to the hands, hour markers and selected dial details. After exposure to light, these elements produce a blue glow that supports quick time reading in darker surroundings. Coverage follows the individual dial design and remains clearly arranged around the three-register chronograph display.
- 100M WATER RESISTANCE: The screw-down crown and screw-down case back support a 100M water-resistance rating for daily wear and suitable surface-water use. Always tighten the crown fully before contact with water, do not operate the chronograph pushers while the watch is wet or submerged, and avoid hot water, steam and diving. Water resistance should be checked periodically as seals age.
- COMPACT 39MM WRIST PROFILE: The WD1863 measures 39mm across the bezel, with a 41mm mid-case, 46mm lug-to-lug length, 12.9mm thickness including the raised crystal and 20mm lug width. These proportions balance the detail of a three-register chronograph with a wearable footprint. The 20mm bracelet remains proportionate to the case, while the raised crystal adds vintage depth to the compact design.
That description applies to the examples discussed, not every movement carrying the mechaquartz label. The term covers different calibers, so the exact arrangement and chronograph behavior depend on the movement. Time+Tide’s explanation of mechaquartz discusses the distinction and the Seiko examples.
How is mechaquartz different from other watch movements?
Mechaquartz is one particular kind of hybrid: quartz timekeeping paired with a mechanical chronograph module. “Hybrid” by itself is broader and does not mean a watch uses this arrangement.

- SUPER C3 GREEN LUME: C3 super luminous material is applied to the hands, hour markers and selected dial details on the Vintage Black version. After exposure to light, these elements produce a green glow for quick reading in darker surroundings. The warm daytime tone and green nighttime display complement the restrained vintage-black chronograph dial.

These proportions balance the detail of a three-register chronograph with a wearable footprint. The 20mm bracelet remains proportionate to the case, while the raised crystal adds vintage depth to the compact design.
- Standard quartz: Quartz handles timekeeping, but the watch is not mechaquartz unless its chronograph uses the mechanical module described above.
- Mechanical chronograph: A purely mechanical movement powers both timekeeping and the stopwatch function; mechaquartz retains quartz timekeeping and requires a battery.
- Spring Drive or kinetic/rotor-powered quartz: These are different movement approaches, not synonyms for mechaquartz. A sweeping seconds hand or an unusual power source does not establish that a watch has a mechanical chronograph module. Teddy Baldassarre’s explainer compares mechaquartz with other mechanisms.
What should you check when buying or comparing one?
Do not assume that watches sharing the label have identical functions or specifications. Check the exact watch and caliber, especially if the chronograph behavior or ownership requirements matter to you.
- Movement identification: Confirm that the listing names a mechaquartz chronograph caliber. “Quartz” alone does not establish the mechanical chronograph module.
- Chronograph operation: Check how the chronograph seconds hand moves and resets, and what each subdial measures. These details vary by caliber and watch.
- Power and upkeep: Quartz timekeeping requires a battery. For service guidance, water resistance, dimensions and other specifications, consult documentation for the specific model; there are no universal figures established for all mechaquartz watches.
- Price and construction: Compare actual models and their published specifications rather than assuming a universal price or build quality from the movement label.
An example: Furlan Marri Sabbia Rosa
Furlan Marri’s Sabbia Rosa product page identifies its movement as a Seiko VK64 and describes the watch as a mechaquartz chronograph. It is a concrete example, not evidence that all mechaquartz watches use the VK64. Product details and availability can change, so check the current listing.
