Perlage is a decorative finish made of small, overlapping circles on a watch movement. Also called circular graining, it is commonly applied to flat surfaces such as plates and bridges; some of those surfaces are partly or entirely hidden once the watch is assembled.
What does perlage look like?
Perlage forms a repeated, pearled texture: small, regular circles overlap in rows across a surface. Patek Philippe explains that the French term refers to the pattern’s resemblance to pearls. Its glossary and official glossary describe the finish as circular graining.
Watchmakers apply the pattern to movement components such as the main plate and bridges. Depending on the movement’s construction, some decorated areas may be visible through the caseback, partly visible, or hidden beneath other components.
How is perlage made?
A general method uses an abrasive polisher or peg mounted in a rotating head. The tool is briefly pressed against the component to create a circular mark, then moved so the next mark overlaps the previous one. Repeating this process in a progression across the surface creates the rows of circles. A. Lange & Söhne describes this stippling process in its watchmaking finishing overview.

This describes the broad technique, not a universal workshop recipe: the sources do not establish that every maker uses identical equipment or executes the pattern in exactly the same way.
How does perlage differ from other movement finishes?
Perlage is identified by its overlapping circular motif and is often found on plates or less visible movement surfaces. Côtes de Genève is a distinct decoration: Audemars Piguet says it is generally reserved for visible bridge surfaces. The two finishes therefore differ in both appearance and typical placement; neither is established as objectively superior by that distinction.

Audemars Piguet also distinguishes decorative motifs from some functional finishing work. It describes bevelling and polishing as techniques that can serve functional purposes, while decorative motifs follow an aesthetic approach. In the sources cited here, perlage is presented as decoration; its presence alone does not establish a gain in accuracy or durability, or prove an overall level of finishing quality.
