Purple gold is a gold–aluminium intermetallic compound, usually written as AuAl₂. Its purple-violet color is part of the compound itself—not a purple coating on ordinary yellow gold. For watch and jewelry buyers, the key distinction is that this unusual material is hard and brittle, so it is not worked like conventional gold alloys.
What purple gold is made of
Jewelry technologist Chris W. Corti describes the purple phase as AuAl₂, more strictly Au₆Al₁₁. His 2012 Jewelry Technology Forum paper gives its composition as 32.9–33.9 atomic percent gold, or approximately 79% gold and 21% aluminium by weight. The difference between atomic and weight percentages matters: the figures measure composition in different ways.
Corti says the compound is theoretically comparable to 18-carat gold by gold fraction. That is a materials comparison, not proof that a particular purple-gold item qualifies for a hallmark. Hallmarking depends on the item and applicable jurisdictional rules.
Why it is purple—and how it differs from other colored gold
In purple gold, the hue belongs to the ordered gold–aluminium intermetallic phase. Conventional colored gold alloys generally get their color by changing the proportions of their alloying metals; surface treatments, by contrast, create color at the surface. These are different material approaches, even if their finished appearance may all be described as colored gold.

Why purple gold is difficult to use in a watch or jewelry design
The compound is hard and brittle rather than ductile. Corti reports hardness up to HV 334 and notes that solid purple gold can be vacuum melted and cast, but can shatter under impact and cannot be conventionally rolled or hammered into shape. That limits the ways it can be made into a component; it does not establish how any particular watch design would perform.
A documented jewelry use
One documented approach is to mill and facet purple gold like a gemstone, then set it into conventional carat-gold jewelry. This uses the material as a decorative insert rather than treating it as an easily formed, continuous gold setting. Patent-described approaches to improving workability are also discussed in Corti’s paper, but they should not be mistaken for a standard consumer fabrication method.

What that means for watches
The available technical evidence establishes a jewelry application, not a verified use in a particular watch model or a standard watchmaking process. If a watch is advertised as having purple gold, ask whether the term means actual gold–aluminium intermetallic material or only a purple-colored surface or imitation. Request documentation of composition rather than relying on the color name alone.
A 2010 review by Klotz describes colored-gold intermetallics as brittle and reports low corrosion resistance for the blue and purple gold alloys it discusses. That broad statement is not enough to predict the service life of every purple-gold design: construction and exposure conditions matter, and no item-specific durability data are established here.

What “purple plague” means in electronics
Purple gold also appears in electronics materials discussions, but there it refers to an unwanted reaction rather than a decorative choice. According to Corti, AuAl₂ may form where gold wires meet aluminium pads when exposed to temperatures above 250°C. The intermetallic growth can embrittle the bond and contribute to joint failure; the electronics industry calls the phenomenon “purple plague.” This is a materials problem at a wire bond, not the intended use of a faceted purple-gold insert.
