Titan’s watch business grew 16% year over year in FY2024–25, while its analog-watch business grew 20%, according to Titan Company. Those are company-division results—not evidence that India’s watchmaking industry as a whole grew at the same rate. Titan’s own story, however, shows how domestic manufacturing capability developed from a 1984 venture into a major watch business now reaching from quartz watches to mechanical complications.
What Titan’s growth figures do—and do not—show
Titan Company’s FY2024–25 report records 16% year-on-year growth in net sales value for its Watches & Wearables division and 20% growth in analog watches. The figures describe Titan’s business, not the growth rate of India’s entire watch market or manufacturing industry. The report also says Titan crossed ₹50,000 crore in company-wide revenue; that figure is not watch-division revenue. Titan Company’s FY2024–25 annual report is the source for these reported results.
That distinction matters when describing a “surge” in Indian watchmaking. Titan’s results indicate strong momentum in one influential domestic company, especially in analog watches. The figures alone cannot establish that every Indian watchmaker, or the sector overall, grew at the same pace.
How Titan helped build watch manufacturing in India
Titan began operations in 1984 as a joint venture involving Tata interests and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The company’s official history says the venture was established to transform India’s watch industry and build domestic capability. Its Hosur factory opened in 1987. Titan’s company history dates those milestones; Tata Group’s account of Titan’s history describes the integrated manufacturing investment and collaboration with France Ebauches.

- Our watches come with high-quality straps that enhance their life and look.
- Titan’s exclusive range of watches is manufactured with reliable water-resistant machinery.
Tata’s retrospective says Titan emerged as a leading Indian quartz analogue watch producer in its first operating year. The broader significance was not only a new watch brand: an integrated facility gave the company a base for manufacturing and assembly in India. Titan now describes a manufacturing unit at Hosur and three assembly plants in northern India, alongside business units in Bengaluru. Titan calls itself the world’s fifth-largest integrated watch manufacturer; that ranking is the company’s own characterization. Titan’s Watches & Wearables overview outlines its current footprint and positioning.
From quartz watches to mechanical horology
Titan’s history is often associated with quartz watches and design-led collections, but its product story has also moved into mechanical watchmaking. The company’s timeline points from quartz products such as Edge to Edge Mechanical, launched in 2021, and then to its first tourbillon. Titan’s history page documents those company milestones.

The tourbillon is a particularly visible signal of Titan’s premium horological ambition, but it should be understood as a limited luxury achievement rather than a representative product for everyday Indian buyers. Titan says the commemorative collection comprised four watches priced at ₹26 lakh each and sold out within a month. These details appear in Titan’s FY2024–25 report; they describe that specific collection, not Titan’s typical watch price or production scale. Titan’s annual report also discusses its Edge Mechanical and tourbillon developments.
A portfolio for different buyers
Titan’s influence also comes from building brands for distinct audiences and price segments rather than pursuing a single kind of watch. Its portfolio includes flagship Titan, Raga, Fastrack, and Sonata. Tata’s historical account connects this range with an integrated approach to manufacturing, design, and retail. Tata Group’s Titan history provides that context.

At the high end, the tourbillon demonstrates a willingness to pursue complex mechanical horology. At a more accessible level, Titan’s automatic collections give buyers a current route into watches powered by a mechanical movement. The Stellar collection, for example, features an in-house automatic calibre, according to Titan. Titan’s automatic-watch collection and Stellar collection page show the company’s current product examples; availability and specifications may vary by model.
Quartz, automatic, and mechanical: what the distinction means
A quartz watch uses a battery-powered electronic circuit to keep time, while an automatic watch is mechanical: the wearer’s movement winds its mainspring through a rotor. “Mechanical” is the broader category; an automatic is one type of mechanical watch, while a hand-wound watch requires winding by the wearer. Titan’s automatic-watch page explains the automatic mechanism and includes the product question, “How does an automatic watch work?” Titan’s automatic-watch information is useful for shoppers comparing the experience as well as the design.

Automatic watches need periodic winding if they stop or have not been worn long enough to keep running. How often to wind one depends on the movement and its power reserve, so follow the instructions for the particular model rather than applying one schedule to every watch. Titan’s product FAQ asks, “How often should I wind my automatic watch?” on its automatic-watch page. See Titan’s automatic-watch FAQ.

Titan connects several strands of India’s watch history: a domestic manufacturing base established at Hosur, a broad brand portfolio, enduring strength in analog watches, and a move into mechanical products that includes both accessible automatic models and an exceptional tourbillon. Its FY2024–25 growth figures make the company’s recent momentum tangible, but they should remain attached to Titan’s own Watches & Wearables division rather than treated as an industry-wide statistic.

Tata Group attributes this reflection to Titan founder and first managing director Xerxes Desai: “There are five projects I have shortlisted. The best among them is watches.” The line captures the choice that started the company; its subsequent history shows how that choice developed into manufacturing scale, design-led brands, and ambitions in fine mechanical watchmaking. Tata Group’s history of Titan attributes the quotation to Desai.
