A textile sensor detects a physical or electrical change, electronics interpret the resulting signal, and the system may send data over Bluetooth to a phone or other receiver. The degree of integration varies: sensing elements may be woven, knitted, stitched, coated, or printed into fabric, while processing electronics may sit in a separate module.
Smart clothing is also called smart textiles, smart fabrics, e-textiles, or intelligent clothing. It is a broad category, not one standardized design. Some connected clothing uses RFID labels to identify a garment or track supply-chain information; that is distinct from apparel designed to sense the wearer’s body.
How smart clothing works
A smart garment works as a chain of sensing material, electrical signal, electronics, and sometimes wireless communication. Rather than putting every function in a watch or external sensor, it can distribute sensing elements and electrical connections through the textile.
- The textile provides the sensing element. Conductive fibers, yarns, fabrics, printed traces, or stitched structures can serve as electrodes, pressure or strain sensors, or signal pathways.
- A change produces a measurable signal. An electrode can detect electrical activity; a pressure- or strain-sensitive element may change its electrical properties when pressed or stretched.
- Electronics interpret the signal. A controller can read and process sensor output into information for a user or application.
- Data may be transferred. In documented sensorized garments, a separate module can send data over Bluetooth to an app or dashboard. Other designs may use local processing or different connections.
- Software presents the result. An app or dashboard may display measurements or trends. What it can show depends on the garment, its sensors, and its software.
What is inside a smart garment?
Conductive fibers and textile circuits
Conductive materials can be made into fibers and yarns, then integrated into textiles by knitting, weaving, embroidery, coating, or printing. These conductive paths can connect sensors with electronics. The construction affects flexibility, comfort, electrical behavior, and durability; no one method is best for every garment.

For example, a sensorized textile may use an electrode to detect electrical activity, or a piezoresistive element whose resistance changes under pressure. The signal then needs appropriate electronics to be interpreted.
Textile sensors
Different garments use different sensors and measure different subsets of signals. Examples reported in research and sensorized-garment reviews include:
- Textile electrodes for electrical signals such as ECG.
- Strain or pressure-sensitive elements for breathing-related movement, body movement, or pressure.
- Motion sensors for movement or activity information.
- Other garment sensors that may estimate heart-rate-related signals, respiration, step count, foot pressure, or temperature, depending on design.
A smart shirt is not automatically capable of all these measurements. Results depend on the sensor, its placement, skin contact, garment fit, electronics, and software.
Electronics, communications, and apps
The textile sensor provides a signal, but electronics are needed to read and interpret it. In some designs, a separate attached or pocketed module handles sensing electronics and wireless transfer. The data may then reach an app or dashboard over Bluetooth. The module’s placement and whether it detaches vary by product.

What can smart clothing measure?
Depending on its design, sensorized clothing may measure or estimate ECG or other heart-related signals, respiration, movement, activity, step count, or pressure. These are examples from documented garments and research, not a standard feature set. A product’s use of the word “smart” does not mean it measures all of them.
Collecting a physiological signal is not the same as diagnosing a medical condition. Potential uses include fitness, sports, research, and some medical monitoring, but product-specific accuracy, validation, regulatory status, and intended use must be established for the particular garment. Do not assume consumer apparel replaces clinical equipment.
Where smart clothing is used
Sports, fitness, and research
Sensorized garments can be used to study movement, activity, and physiological signals in sports or research settings. Textile sensors may provide sensing across clothing rather than relying only on a compact device at the wrist. What a garment can reliably measure depends on its specific construction and use.

Some garments are developed or studied for medical monitoring, but the category as a whole is not a medical device. A research result or recorded signal does not by itself establish clinical suitability. Look for evidence and intended-use information for the exact product before relying on it for health decisions.

Connected garment labels
“Internet of Clothing” can also refer to a broader ecosystem that includes RFID-enabled labels and connected garment information. A label that stores garment identity or supply-chain information is related to connected clothing, but it is different from a textile sensor that measures the wearer.
Are smart clothes completely self-contained?
Not necessarily. Some garments integrate sensing elements into fabric but rely on a separate electronics module for processing or Bluetooth transfer. Check whether the particular product requires a module, battery, charger, phone app, or account.
A 2021 review described a Hexoskin shirt with textile electrodes for single-lead ECG and a separate e-module with breathing and movement sensors, connected by Bluetooth to an app. This is a dated example from that review, not confirmation of a current model’s specifications, clinical suitability, or availability.

| Device type | Where sensing happens | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Smart clothing | Textile elements or garment-mounted sensors, sometimes with a separate module | Sensing can be integrated or distributed across clothing; fit, skin contact, washing, and movement matter. |
| Smartwatch | A compact device worn on the wrist | Uses a wrist-worn device rather than sensing elements integrated into fabric. |
| Chest strap | A sensor in an external housing worn against the chest | Contacts the body but is not itself integrated into the textile. |
These categories can work together. A smart garment may use a separate module, and a phone or watch may receive its data. The useful distinction is where sensing occurs and how the electronics are arranged.

Why smart clothing can be difficult to use
Movement, fit, and skin contact
Textile electrodes need suitable contact with skin. Fit, sensor placement, and body movement can shift or wrinkle fabric and reduce signal quality. The IEEE Innovate account of an e-textile prototype quotes an RMIT researcher noting that large body movement and garment care can cause misalignment, shifts, or wrinkles in conductive textiles.
Washing and durability
Conductive materials and connections must tolerate wear and garment care. In one IEEE Innovate account, a stitched piezoresistive prototype was washed and dried ten times without reported stitch failure or performance deterioration. That is a result for one prototype, not a general wash-life guarantee. Check the maker’s care instructions and whether electronics must be removed.
Power and privacy
A system that records or transfers data needs power, and continuous monitoring can make battery duration a practical limitation. Connected garments may also handle sensitive data, so check how a particular product stores, uses, and shares it.

- What does it measure? Look for the specific signals and intended activity, not just the word “smart.”
- How are the sensors placed? Consider fit, skin contact, and whether the garment is suitable for your intended use.
- Are the electronics included and removable? Confirm what components are required and how they charge.
- What app or connection does it require? Check compatibility and whether a phone, account, or service is needed.
- How should it be washed? Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; do not assume the electronics can be washed with the garment.
- What evidence supports its use? Do not infer accuracy or medical suitability from the category name.
FAQ
How does smart clothing technology work?
Textile sensors detect a physical or electrical change and produce a measurable signal. Electronics interpret that signal, and some systems send data over Bluetooth to an app or dashboard.

What can smart clothing measure?
Depending on the garment, examples include ECG or other heart-related signals, respiration, movement, activity, step count, or pressure. No single garment should be assumed to measure all of these.
Does smart clothing have to connect to a phone?
Not always. Some systems use Bluetooth to send data to an app or dashboard, while others may process or use data locally. Check the requirements for the specific garment.
Can smart clothing be washed?
Care requirements vary. Some garments may require removing the electronics before washing. Follow the product’s care instructions; a limited test of one research prototype is not a general durability guarantee.
Can smart clothing diagnose a medical condition?
Not by virtue of being smart clothing. A garment that records a physiological signal is not automatically a validated or regulated diagnostic device. Check the specific product’s intended use and evidence.
