The Apple Watch’s small lowercase “i” inside a circle is an information button for setup. It normally appears on the pairing screen, usually near the lower-right corner of the display—not on the ordinary watch face. Tap it when the iPhone asks you to pair the watch manually; it shows identifying details such as the watch’s name so you can select the correct device.

What the Apple Watch “i” icon does
On the watch itself, the circled “i” means information. During setup, it provides information needed to identify the watch during manual pairing. It does not repair a connection, bypass Activation Lock, or indicate that the watch is broken or disconnected.
This button is different from the red iPhone, red X, and green iPhone symbols that can appear in Control Center. Those symbols describe connection status; the circled “i” on the setup screen supports pairing.

Where to find the “i” on the watch
- Turn on the Apple Watch.
- Choose a language and region if the setup screens request them.
- Continue until the watch displays its pairing or setup screen.
- Look for the small circled “i”, normally near the bottom-right of the display.
- Tap it to view the watch’s identifying information.
The exact layout can vary with watchOS, language, accessibility settings, and setup state. The important condition is that the watch must be in pairing or setup mode. You should not expect this button in the regular Settings app, in everyday apps, or on a normal watch face. How to use it for manual pairing
Automatic pairing uses the camera to recognize the animation on the watch. If that does not start or cannot read the animation, use the manual option:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Start adding or pairing a watch, then hold the iPhone close to it.
- When offered the choice, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually on the iPhone.
- Tap the circled “i” on the Apple Watch.
- Read the watch’s displayed name and select the matching name on the iPhone.
- Enter the six-digit code shown by the watch if the iPhone requests it.
- Finish the setup instructions on both devices.
Manual pairing is useful when lighting, a damaged display, an iPhone camera problem, or a setup glitch prevents scanning. It is slower than camera pairing because you must match the watch name and, when prompted, enter a code. The complete current procedure is documented in the Apple Watch User Guide.

The other information icon: in the iPhone Watch app
There is a separate information button on the iPhone. It manages a watch that is already listed in the Watch app; it is not the setup button on the watch.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches at the top.
- Tap the circled information button beside the watch’s name.
Depending on the watch, account, cellular plan, and software version, this screen can offer Find My Apple Watch, Unpair Apple Watch, cellular-plan controls, and Activation Lock information. Apple may label the control More Info or call it the information button. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
For general device details rather than pairing or management, use Settings → General → About on the watch. On the iPhone, the Watch app’s My Watch → General → About section may provide similar details.

Why the “i” icon is missing
The watch is already paired
A normal watch face usually means the watch is already paired with an iPhone or has not been returned to its setup state. The pairing-screen information button will not normally appear while the watch is operating normally.
The watch is not in setup mode
Restart setup and wait for the pairing screen. Looking in the watch’s everyday interface will not reveal the temporary pairing control.
The pairing process has stalled
Keep the devices close together, confirm Bluetooth is on, make sure the iPhone has Wi‑Fi or cellular connectivity, and turn off Airplane Mode. Restart both devices and try pairing again. Apple’s connection guidance is at If your Apple Watch isn’t connected or paired with your iPhone.

You are looking at the iPhone
The iPhone’s information button appears beside a watch name in Watch app → My Watch → All Watches. It is not expected to appear on the watch’s pairing display.
The watch belongs to another Apple Account
An erased watch can still be protected by Activation Lock. If setup asks for a previous owner’s Apple Account password, the account holder must remove the lock; the circled “i” cannot bypass it.

Use the route that matches your situation.
You have the paired iPhone
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch → All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- For a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password when asked to disable Activation Lock.
Unpairing from the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. Apple’s instructions are in Unpair and erase your Apple Watch.

You do not have the paired iPhone
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General → Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if requested and confirm.
This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account previously linked to the watch may still be required for activation.
Buying or receiving a used Apple Watch
Before treating a missing “i” as a hardware fault, confirm that the previous owner:
- Unpaired the watch from their iPhone.
- Erased it.
- Removed it from their Apple Account and disabled Activation Lock.
- Removed or canceled any cellular plan attached to a cellular model.
If setup requests the former owner’s Apple Account password, stop: the watch is still linked to that account. The former owner must remove the lock; resetting the watch yourself will not do so. These are guide-specific requirements, not a universal rule for every older Apple Watch and iPhone combination. Compatibility varies by model and software version.

The Apple Watch “i” is a temporary setup button, normally found near the lower-right of the pairing screen. Use it when manual pairing is required; if it is absent, first confirm that the watch is actually in setup mode rather than showing an already configured watch face.
