UNDONE’s Type 20 Special Edition is a modern pilot-watch chronograph inspired by the French military Type 20 tradition. The history needs a date correction: France’s Type 20 procurement took shape in the early 1950s, after World War II. Breguet’s archival account discusses possible German Hanhart influence, but that does not establish that UNDONE’s watch directly copies a World War II-issued model.
Type 20 is postwar French military history—not a World War II issue date
Breguet says the French Ministry of Defense developed the relevant Type 20 requirement in the early 1950s. Its timeline dates Breguet’s production to 1954, with deliveries to the French Air Force principally from 1955 to 1959. Those dates place the French military program after World War II, even though the style draws on an earlier era of aviation chronographs. Breguet’s historical timeline describes the procurement and production sequence.
The wartime connection is more nuanced than a direct lineage. In its archival history, Breguet says a 1953 report characterized its Type 20 as equivalent to the German Hanhart chronograph. The same account says the French aviation technical service’s Type 20 may have been influenced in part by Hanhart watches acquired as war spoils. Breguet also notes that researchers have not found a formal Type 20 specification document comparable to the Type 21 specification, making the exact testing requirements difficult to establish. That is a possible influence described in Breguet’s archive, not proof that the UNDONE model reproduces a World War II German military watch. Breguet’s archival history of the Type XX’s origins provides that qualification.
Type 20 and Type XX mean different things in Breguet’s terminology
The distinction is in the numerals as well as the historical designation: Breguet uses Type 20 for the Arabic-numeral, military-inspired version and Type XX for the civilian version. Its current collection page describes the military-inspired Type 20 as following French Air Force features: a 30-minute counter, 1/5-second graduations, a non-graduated bezel and a pear-shaped crown. UNDONE’s current product listing calls its watch the Type 20 Special Edition, not Type XX. The title’s “Type XX” wording is understandable shorthand for the broader design family, but the product name and Breguet’s military-versus-civilian distinction should not be collapsed. UNDONE’s product page describes the model as an “Iconic Pilot Watch” and a “21st-century renaissance.”
What the UNDONE Special Edition offers
UNDONE lists a TMI VK64 mechanical-quartz hybrid movement, a 316L stainless-steel case and a hardened domed K1 crystal. The maker gives the case width as 41.5 mm excluding the crown, thickness as 12 mm including the crystal, and water resistance as 3 ATM / 30 meters. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.

Flyback is part of the history, but not a verified UNDONE feature
A flyback chronograph lets the wearer reset the chronograph to zero with the lower pushbutton and immediately begin timing again, rather than stopping, resetting and restarting through separate operations. Breguet describes this as useful for recording consecutive times. That explanation concerns the function and historical Type XX context; UNDONE specifies a TMI VK64 mechanical-quartz hybrid but does not say that this Special Edition has a flyback mechanism. Breguet’s account of the flyback chronograph explains the function.

How large was the French military Type 20 order?
Breguet’s archival history recounts a 1954 order for 1,100 military Type 20 watches, with most delivered from 1955 to 1959. Swatch Group’s 2023 historical overview also reports 1,100 military watches and the same delivery span; these are two accounts of the reported order, not separate totals. The Swatch Group overview additionally reports 500 Type XX military watches for French Naval Aviation, delivered in January 1960, and more than 2,000 civilian Type XX models sold. These are historical figures attributed to the brand group, not independent market estimates. Swatch Group’s 2023 overview gives the naval and civilian figures.
