What to Ask a Watch Consultant Before Choosing a Swiss Timepiece

Ask the consultant to document what Swiss Made, COSC, and METAS certifications cover for the exact watch, plus its water-resistance rating, fit, and written warranty and service terms.

A useful consultation confirms five things about the exact watch you are considering: what its “Swiss Made” claim covers, which certification applies and to which part of the watch, the model’s own water-resistance rating, how it fits your wrist, and what written warranty and service terms the seller will stand behind. Certifications answer narrow questions. They do not settle fit, price, or after-sale support, so those need to be asked separately.

Confirm what “Swiss Made” establishes for this exact reference

“Swiss Made” on a watch is a legally regulated designation, not a marketing adjective. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry’s guide to using “Swiss” for watches (accessed in 2026) describes the criteria a watch must meet:

  • Swiss technical development
  • A Swiss movement
  • Casing-up in Switzerland
  • Final inspection in Switzerland
  • At least 60% of manufacturing costs generated in Switzerland

Ask the consultant to show you the documentation that supports the claim for the specific reference, not just the brand’s general statement. These criteria describe the rules the label must satisfy. They are not an independent audit of the watch on the table, so a consultant’s assurance should be matched to a document you can read.

Movement certification versus finished-watch certification

Swiss watch certifications are easy to confuse because they test different things. Some assess the movement alone; others assess the complete mechanical watch. The table below sets out what the cited official sources describe for each.

Certification What it assesses Test or requirement details Rate figure as published
COSC (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry explainer, page accessed 2026) Movement Fifteen days, five positions, three temperatures between 8°C and 38°C Not stated in the explainer
ISO 3159 chronometer (METAS certification page, accessed 2026) Movement Not stated on the page for this comparison Average daily rate deviation of −4 to +6 seconds per day
METAS Master Chronometer under METAS-N001 (METAS certification page, accessed 2026) Finished mechanical watch Assessment scope includes accuracy under varying conditions, power reserve, and water resistance 0 to +5 seconds per day

The Federation’s COSC explainer describes the test this way: “This testing lasts for fifteen days, in five positions and at three different temperatures between 8° and 38°C.” That describes how the movement was tested. It is not a promise that you will see a particular rate on your wrist, because daily wear conditions differ from test conditions.

Questions to ask about the paperwork

  1. Is the movement COSC-certified, and which certificate or serial-linked document identifies this specific watch?
  2. Is the finished watch METAS Master Chronometer-certified, or is the claim limited to the movement under ISO 3159?
  3. If the claim is movement-only, will the seller tell you that in writing so the listing and your understanding match?
  4. Which rate range applies to the certificate you are shown, and which test conditions does that document list?

Water resistance and the activities you plan

Water resistance is the question buyers most often reduce to a single number, and it is the one that most needs the model’s own documentation. One forum poster in the search results put the priority this way: “What I find important is that a daily beater is at least 100m water proof so it can be worn for swimming without worries.” That is one person’s preference, not technical advice, but it reflects a common expectation: a watch you wear every day, including in water.

Certification scope does not answer that expectation for you. METAS includes water resistance among the areas its Master Chronometer assessment covers, but the scope of a certification does not tell you the rating of a particular model or which activities the manufacturer permits. Ask for these items:

  • The exact water-resistance rating printed in the official manual or specification for this reference
  • Whether the manufacturer permits swimming, diving, or showering with this model, and under what conditions
  • Whether the rating is retested after a service, and whether the seal is replaced as part of that service

If the rating in the manual is lower than the activity you have in mind, the watch is the wrong choice for that activity regardless of its certification.

Fit, size, and how the watch sits on your wrist

Fit is individual, and no universal case-size rule was established in the sources reviewed. A watch that looks modest in a photograph can sit high or wide on a small wrist, and a clasp or bracelet can change comfort more than the case does. Try the exact watch if you can. If you cannot, ask the consultant for the manufacturer’s published dimensions for this reference:

  • Case diameter and case thickness
  • Lug-to-lug measurement, which determines how the case overhangs your wrist
  • Bracelet or strap width, and whether the strap is supplied with the watch
  • Clasp type and whether it can be adjusted or extended

Written warranty, service location, and seller terms

A brand’s general reputation is not a warranty. Warranty duration, service cost, and turnaround time vary by seller and market, and none were verified for any specific model in the sources reviewed. Before you pay, ask for these in writing:

Comparing the candidates you are considering

When you have two or more real candidates, put them side by side on the same axes rather than comparing marketing claims:

  • Intended use, such as daily wear, water activity, or occasional formal wear
  • Wrist fit and comfort, based on measurements and, ideally, a fitting
  • Certification scope, noting whether each claim covers the movement or the finished watch
  • Model-specific water-resistance documentation
  • Design and price
  • Warranty and service access in your market

Certification is one useful axis among these. It should not outweigh fit or written commercial terms, and no single certification is necessary for every buyer. Decide which factors matter most for your use, then use the consultation to confirm them for the specific watches on your shortlist.
