Buy the reference, not just the name. “Seventies” is a Glashütte Original family that includes the 70s, Seventies Chronograph XV and Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date, with different dials, straps, bracelets and limited editions. Before discussing price, match the seller’s complete reference to the manufacturer’s case, dial, movement and accessory configuration. On a pre-owned watch, inspect the case for over-polishing, test every chronograph and date function, review the paperwork and service history, and have an authorised service partner pressure-test the watch. Those checks matter more than attractive photographs or a generic “Seventies” description.
What exactly is a Glashütte Original Seventies watch?
The name covers several related models rather than one fixed specification. Glashütte Original’s Vintage Collection lists the 70s, Seventies Chronograph XV and Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date families, each with multiple configurations. The seller should be able to provide the complete reference printed on the watch, warranty card or invoice; a listing that says only “Seventies” is incomplete.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe current blue Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date reference 1-37-02-08-02-70 is the useful specification baseline for comparison. Glashütte Original describes its design as recalling Seventies classics, with “dynamic lines and gentle curves” giving it a retro-modern character. That styling is consistent across the family, but the exact case, dial, movement and strap details are reference-specific.
How do I identify the exact reference before buying?
Record the full reference from the case, papers and seller’s invoice, then compare all three sources. Do not accept a model name, a shortened number or a photograph as a substitute for the complete reference.

Use the reference as your first filter
- Reference 1-37-02-08-02-70: the blue “Radiant Blue” Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date with a stainless-steel case and bracelet alternatives.
- Reference 1-37-02-08-02-62: the same 40 x 40 mm steel-case family shown with a brown-grey calfskin strap.
- Reference 1-37-02-09-02-70: the Fab Green version, offered with brown-grey nubuck, black rubber or a steel bracelet.
- Reference 1-37-02-20-02-70: a 100-piece worldwide limited edition. Confirm the edition number, papers and dial against the official model page before paying a scarcity premium.
These examples show why two watches described as “Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date” may not have the same dial, strap or collectability. Save the manufacturer’s reference page for the exact number and compare the case shape, dial furniture, hands, pushers, crown, movement view and supplied strap or bracelet.
What are the core specifications of the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date?
For reference 1-37-02-08-02-70, Glashütte Original’s 2026 specification gives a stainless-steel automatic watch measuring 40.00 by 40.00 mm and 14.10 mm high. It uses manufacture Calibre 37-02, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and has a stated power reserve of 70 hours plus or minus 5 percent. Water resistance is rated at 10 bar, with a screwed crown.
| Specification | Reference 1-37-02-08-02-70 | What to verify on a used watch |
|---|---|---|
| Case | Stainless steel, 40.00 x 40.00 mm | Correct shape, finishing and reference-specific dial |
| Thickness | 14.10 mm | Case-back and crystal not damaged; no excessive refinishing |
| Movement | Manufacture Calibre 37-02 | Movement architecture and finishing match the reference |
| Frequency | 28,800 vph (4 Hz) | Service documentation and consistent operation |
| Power reserve | 70 h ± 5% | Do not treat the factory figure as proof of current condition |
| Chronograph | Flyback, 30-minute counter and 12-hour display | Start, stop, flyback and reset operate cleanly |
| Date and displays | Panorama Date, small seconds and power-reserve display | Date alignment and hand positioning are correct |
| Water resistance | 10 bar | Recent pressure-test result, gasket and crown condition |
| End-link width | 26 mm | Correct proprietary end links, clasp and reference |
Swatch Group’s 24 May 2022 press release also quotes a 40 x 40 mm case, 70-hour reserve and 10-bar rating. The manufacturer’s current page is the more useful source for the complete feature list and dimensions, while the press release provides historical confirmation of the headline specifications.
How should I inspect Calibre 37-02 and the watch’s functions?
The sapphire case back should show the Calibre 37-02 architecture described by Glashütte Original. A photograph can screen out an obvious mismatch, but an independent watchmaker should inspect the movement before purchase.
Movement details to compare
- Three-quarter plate with stripe finish.
- Regulator-free fine adjustment.
- Skeletonised rotor carrying the Double-G symbol and a 21-carat gold oscillation weight.
- Polished steel parts, bevelled edges and blued screws.
Compare the movement view with the official photographs for the exact reference. A replacement, damaged or incorrectly finished component is a reason to pause, not an invitation to infer authenticity from the seller’s assurances.
Function checks to request
- Unscrew and operate the crown. It should wind and set the watch without grinding, slipping or abnormal resistance.
- Start and stop the chronograph. The seconds hand should engage decisively, and the 30-minute and 12-hour indications should advance.
- Use the flyback function and then reset. The hands should return cleanly and consistently to zero.
- Check the small seconds, Panorama Date and power-reserve display for correct movement and alignment.
- Ask the seller to document these operations on a continuous video if an in-person inspection is impossible, then make the sale conditional on an independent examination.
A clean reset and aligned hands are practical condition screens, not a substitute for a service report. Intermittent stopping, a chronograph that will not reset to zero or a date that sits visibly out of alignment should be priced as a repair risk.

What case and crystal problems should I look for?
The square 40 mm case wears differently from a round watch of the same nominal diameter. Inspect the watch in person, or request high-resolution images of every edge, lug, pusher and case-back surface.
Case-finishing checklist
- Look for rounded corners, softened transitions or uneven widths between polished and satin-brushed surfaces; these can indicate over-polishing.
- Check the bezel, lugs and case sides for dents, deep scratches and visible tool marks.
- Inspect the sapphire crystal for chips at the edges and scratches that may be mistaken for dial damage.
- Examine the crown and pushers for correct shape, engraving and firm, even action.
- Check the case back and gasket area for opening marks, corrosion or evidence of an unrecorded intervention.
There is no universal cosmetic grading scale for these watches. Judge the actual surfaces against unpolished manufacturer images and ask whether any refinishing is documented. A heavily rounded case can be harder to restore correctly than a watch with honest, limited wear.
Is the 40 mm, 14.10 mm case too thick or too square for my wrist?
Only trying the watch on your intended wrist can answer that reliably. The 40 x 40 mm dimensions describe a square footprint, and the 14.10 mm height can make the watch feel taller and more substantial than a 40 mm round model.
Fit checks that matter
- Check whether the lugs sit within the edges of your wrist rather than projecting beyond them.
- Move your wrist through normal positions to see whether the case or clasp digs in.
- Assess the crown and chronograph pushers while bending the wrist; their position can affect comfort.
- Compare the supplied bracelet, rubber strap and leather strap, because their stiffness and drape change the perceived size.
- Make sure the clasp closes securely and that bracelet links articulate without binding.
Do not infer comfort from photographs or from the nominal diameter alone. A square case distributes its visual mass differently, and the 14.10 mm thickness remains relevant under a shirt cuff.

Which dial and strap configuration should I buy?
Choose the configuration you can identify and service, not merely the color that appears most often in listings. The blue, Fab Green, leather, rubber and bracelet versions can differ in both appearance and replacement-part requirements.
| Configuration documented by the manufacturer | Dial or edition | Listed strap or bracelet options | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-37-02-08-02-70 | Radiant Blue | Steel bracelet alternatives; additional straps available separately | Verify bracelet, end links and clasp against the reference |
| 1-37-02-08-02-62 | Blue-family variant | Brown-grey calfskin strap shown | Confirm the strap and buckle are original or clearly disclosed replacements |
| 1-37-02-09-02-70 | Fab Green | Brown-grey nubuck, black rubber or steel bracelet | Do not assume blue-model parts or colors interchange |
| 1-37-02-20-02-70 | Limited edition | Reference-specific; verify official configuration | Edition number, papers and dial must support any scarcity premium |
Glashütte Original lists brown calfskin, blue Louisiana alligator, black rubber and steel-bracelet alternatives for the blue model and states that additional straps and bracelets can be purchased separately. The listed end-link width is 26 mm, but that does not mean any generic 26 mm strap will fit the proprietary end links.

How to verify a replacement strap or bracelet
- Ask for the exact reference of the watch and the part number or provenance of the strap, buckle and end links.
- Compare the end-link profile, clasp markings, stitching, material and color with the manufacturer’s configuration.
- Check for bracelet stretch, worn screw heads, cracked rubber, dry leather and damaged spring bars.
- Price an original replacement through an authorised channel before treating a non-original strap as an equivalent.
The manufacturer’s service portal allows searches by reference number and says accessories such as straps, buckles and bracelets can be searched by technical criteria. Authorised service partners, rather than ordinary buyers, can access service reports and order additional spare parts.
What paperwork and provenance should come with a pre-owned Seventies?
Ask for a coherent paper trail that ties the watch to the stated reference and ownership history. Missing documents do not automatically make a watch counterfeit, but they reduce what you can verify and may affect future service or resale.

- Complete reference and serial information.
- Original purchase invoice, if available.
- Dated warranty card and the name of the warranty issuer.
- Service invoices, reports and details of replaced parts.
- Original box, instruction material and any spare links or straps.
- For a limited edition, the edition number and papers identifying the edition.
Use the reference to compare the official case, dial, movement and strap configuration. If the seller refuses an independent inspection or a pressure test, treat that refusal as a purchase-risk signal and adjust your price or walk away.
Can I rely on the 10-bar water-resistance rating?
No. Ten bar is the design rating for the specified watch, not proof that an older or opened example remains water-tight. Gaskets age, crowns can be damaged and a case may have been opened without a documented test.
Before exposing a used watch to water
- Ask for a recent pressure-test result from an authorised service partner.
- Have the crown, pushers, case-back seal and crystal inspected for damage.
- Confirm that any recent service or case opening is documented.
- Until the test is passed, keep the watch away from swimming, showering and other deliberate water exposure.
A pressure test establishes water resistance at the time of testing; it does not guarantee performance after a damaged crown, impact or future opening.
What is known about servicing Calibre 37-02?
No universal Calibre 37-02 service interval, overhaul price or timekeeping tolerance is published in the available manufacturer and retailer material. Service needs and cost depend on the individual watch, its condition, parts required and the service location.

Ask an authorised service partner for a condition-based quote after inspection. Request that the estimate identify the work proposed, replaced components, water-resistance test and warranty on the service. A seller’s statement that a watch is “recently serviced” is meaningful only when supported by a dated invoice or report.
How much should I pay for a Glashütte Original Seventies?
Use like-for-like current listings rather than a single headline price. Wempe’s 2026 listing for reference 1-37-02-08-02-63 shows €14,900 including VAT, with a two-year manufacturer warranty plus a one-year Wempe warranty. That is a retailer- and geography-specific benchmark, not a universal market value or a guaranteed pre-owned price.
| Comparison factor | Why it changes the number you should pay |
|---|---|
| Exact reference and edition status | Different dials, straps and limited production can have different demand and replacement parts |
| Taxes and selling jurisdiction | A VAT-inclusive European listing is not directly comparable with an untaxed or imported watch |
| Condition and polishing | Rounded edges, damaged crystal or worn bracelet can require costly correction |
| Service history | Documented work reduces uncertainty; an undocumented watch may need a service immediately |
| Warranty issuer and term | Coverage, transferability and claim process differ between manufacturer and retailer warranties |
| Return window and inspection rights | A shorter or non-existent return period increases purchase risk |
| Included accessories | Original bracelet, spare links, straps and papers add practical value but should be verified |
Compare at least two current offers with the same reference, dial, strap or bracelet, tax treatment, warranty issuer, return terms and service evidence. A limited-edition number without matching papers is not enough to justify a premium.

- Capture the identity: write down the complete reference, serial information and claimed edition status.
- Match the factory configuration: compare case dimensions, dial color, applied indexes, hands, movement view, strap or bracelet and clasp with the official reference page.
- Request provenance: obtain the invoice, dated warranty card, service documents, box and spare links or straps.
- Inspect the exterior: examine polishing, crystal, crown, pushers, case back, bracelet stretch and strap wear.
- Operate the functions: check winding, time setting, chronograph start/stop, flyback, reset, date, power reserve and hand alignment.
- Arrange independent verification: have an authorised service partner or qualified independent watchmaker inspect the movement and confirm the reference.
- Pressure-test the watch: obtain a current result before relying on the 10-bar rating.
- Compare the all-in price: include taxes, shipping, service, replacement straps and the strength of the warranty and return policy.
- Document the transaction: ensure the invoice states the exact reference, serial, included accessories, condition disclosures and agreed return terms.
Which red flags should make me walk away?
- The seller cannot provide the complete reference or gives conflicting numbers on the watch and papers.
- The dial, movement or strap configuration does not match the manufacturer’s photographs for that reference.
- A limited-edition claim has no edition number or supporting paperwork.
- The seller will not allow an independent inspection, movement examination or pressure test.
- The chronograph will not reset cleanly, the Panorama Date is misaligned or the power-reserve display behaves inconsistently.
- Case edges appear rounded while the seller describes the watch as unpolished, or refinishing is not disclosed.
- The price is justified only by rarity language, with no comparable reference, condition report or warranty terms.
- Replacement straps, buckles or end links are presented as original without proof.
Any one issue may have an explanation; several together indicate that the seller is asking you to assume too much risk.
What should I leave with before making the payment?
You should be able to state the exact reference, edition status, case and dial configuration, movement, included strap or bracelet, condition, service history, warranty issuer, return window and pressure-test status. If one of those remains unknown, treat it as a cost or risk in the offer rather than silently assuming the best case.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether a Seventies warranty is still useful?
Read the warranty card for its activation date, issuing entity and coverage period, then ask whether the warranty transfers to a second owner in the selling jurisdiction. A retailer extension, such as a concessionaire’s additional coverage, may have different claim rules from the manufacturer warranty.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I fit a generic 26 mm strap to the watch?
Not necessarily. The 26 mm figure is the listed end-link width for the blue model, but the proprietary end-link shape, spring-bar position and clasp connection still have to match. Confirm compatibility with an authorised service partner before ordering a third-party strap.
What should a limited-edition buyer photograph for their records?
Keep clear images of the dial, case back, reference, serial information, edition number, warranty card and invoice together. This creates a record that links the physical watch to the stated 100-piece edition and can help with future insurance or resale.
Does a clean chronograph reset prove the movement is healthy?
No. It only shows that the visible controls and hands perform one basic operation correctly. Amplitude, lubrication, wear and water resistance require movement inspection and appropriate service tests.
