If your Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic has stopped, unscrew the crown, wind it clockwise carefully, set the time, and screw the crown fully flush with the case. The watch uses the hand-wound CW-003 calibre, with a published power reserve of 144 hours (six days). Christopher Ward’s CW-003 instructions specify 95 full crown turns from empty, although that count comes from the C12 Loco handbook rather than a C1-specific manual. If the watch will not restart, runs for far less than six days, or loses more than the movement’s stated -0/+7 seconds per day, stop forcing the crown and arrange diagnosis through Christopher Ward or a qualified watchmaker.

This guide separates a harmless empty mainspring from symptoms that indicate magnetism, shock, wear or a service issue.

What should I do first if the C1 Loco Classic stopped overnight?

Start with a controlled manual-winding check. The C1 Loco Classic has no battery and no automatic rotor: its mainspring must be wound through the crown. An overnight stop can simply mean that the stored power ran out, especially if the watch was not fully wound before it was put down.

  1. Hold the watch securely and unscrew the crown until it reaches the winding position. Do not pull it directly into the hand-setting position unless you intend to set the time.
  2. Turn the crown clockwise. Christopher Ward’s official CW-003 owner instruction says to turn the crown fully 95 times to wind the movement from empty to full power. Because that document is for the C12 Loco, treat 95 turns as movement-level guidance, not a C1-specific confirmation.
  3. Stop immediately if the crown grinds, slips, feels unusually loose or tight, or will not wind normally. Never use pliers, excessive force or an improvised tool.
  4. Set the time if necessary, then screw the crown completely home. The crown should sit flush with the case in its normal position; this is required to maintain the watch’s water resistance.
  5. Observe the watch over a consistent, fully wound period. Record when it stops and compare the elapsed time with the 144-hour specification.

If the seconds hand does not begin moving after careful winding, or the watch stops again quickly, repeated winding will not diagnose the underlying fault. Keep the crown closed and move to the service checks below.

How many turns does the Christopher Ward C1 Loco need?

The only published turn count supplied for the CW-003 is 95 complete clockwise turns from empty to full power. It appears in Christopher Ward’s C12 Loco handbook, which uses the same calibre. No C1 Loco Classic-specific handbook with its own turn count has been identified, so the figure should be used as a careful reference rather than a model-specific guarantee.

A watch that is partly wound will need fewer turns than one that has run completely down. Wind slowly and evenly; the goal is to restore power, not to force the crown against abnormal resistance. Once the watch is running, set the time and secure the screw-down crown. If winding feels different from normal, stop before opening the case or attempting any adjustment.

What should a healthy, fully wound C1 Loco do?

The CW-003 specification gives you two useful benchmarks: how long the watch should run and how much its rate may differ from a reference clock. These are specifications, not a promise that every watch will perform identically after years of use or between service intervals.

Characteristic Published figure How to use it
Power reserve 144 hours (six days) After a full wind, the watch should continue for approximately this long; condition and service history can affect the actual duration.
Timing tolerance -0/+7 seconds per day The stated range allows no slow rate and up to seven seconds fast per day under the specified conditions.
Frequency 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) This identifies the movement’s operating frequency; it is not a guarantee of rate in every position.
Case diameter 41 mm A dimensional specification, useful when identifying the model or checking case fit.
Water resistance 30 m Keep the crown fully screwed down; water resistance depends on the seals and their condition.

For a reserve check, wind the watch carefully, note the start time, and leave it in a stable location. Do not keep topping it up during the test, because that replaces the power being measured. A result substantially shorter than six days, repeated under the same conditions, is a reason to seek diagnosis rather than to keep forcing the crown.

How do I tell whether the C1 Loco is actually losing time?

Measure the rate against a dependable reference for at least 24 hours after winding, and preferably for several consecutive days. Compare the watch at the same reference point each day and write down the difference. A small, repeatable offset can result from the watch’s position while resting; a sudden, large, worsening or erratic loss is more concerning.

The published -0/+7 seconds-per-day tolerance means the movement is specified not to run slow and to run no more than seven seconds fast per day. That figure should be interpreted with the watch fully wound and under comparable conditions. A rate outside the range once does not identify a particular failed part, but a repeatable deviation deserves professional assessment.

Distinguish a rate problem from a reserve problem

  • Stops after roughly six days when fully wound: the reserve is broadly consistent with the published specification.
  • Runs continuously but gains or loses seconds each day: measure the rate over several days and compare it with -0/+7 seconds per day.
  • Stops after a few hours or a day despite a careful full wind: suspect a power-delivery, winding or service problem.
  • Rate changes abruptly or becomes erratic: consider magnetism, a shock or another fault and arrange diagnosis.

Can magnetism make a CW-003 stop or run inaccurately?

Yes. Strong magnetic fields can magnetize a mechanical watch’s hairspring. Depending on the severity and the affected parts, the watch may run very fast, lose time, behave erratically or stop. A sudden rate change after contact with a magnetic source is a useful clue, but it does not prove magnetism by itself.

Move the watch away from strong magnets and allow it to return to normal room temperature before measuring the rate again. Magnetic sources can include equipment with powerful speakers or magnetic closures; distance matters, so do not store the watch directly against such objects. A demagnetizer is a tool category rather than a guaranteed home remedy. If the cause is uncertain, or the watch remains inaccurate after being moved away from the source, a qualified professional should inspect it.

What other conditions can make the watch lose time?

Mechanical rate is affected by more than the mainspring. Temperature changes alter the dimensions and elasticity of components. Gravity and the position in which the watch rests can change the balance’s effective rate. A knock or drop can disturb the regulating system or other movement components, even when the case shows little visible damage.

  • Temperature: let the watch return to a normal, stable temperature before judging its rate.
  • Position: compare readings over multiple days rather than concluding from one overnight resting position.
  • Shock: if the change began after an impact, avoid further wear until it has been checked.
  • Magnetism: remove the suspected source; persistent symptoms require professional evaluation.
  • Service condition: dried or aged lubricants and wear can reduce reserve or make the rate unstable, which is why Christopher Ward’s service guidance recommends periodic maintenance.

Do not remove the caseback, alter the regulator or attempt to “speed up” or “slow down” the movement yourself. An adjustment made without diagnosing the cause can conceal a larger problem and may affect warranty coverage.

When should I send the C1 Loco Classic for service?

Arrange service or diagnosis when the symptom is persistent, severe or linked to a known event. Christopher Ward or a watchmaker qualified to work on the CW-003 can determine whether the issue is winding-related, magnetic, impact-related or due to normal wear.

Observed symptom Recommended next step
No movement after a careful winding attempt Stop winding, keep the crown closed and request diagnosis.
Repeatedly stops well before the six-day reserve Document the elapsed run time from a full wind and arrange service.
Sudden major gain, loss or erratic rate Move it away from magnets, avoid shocks and seek professional assessment if the rate does not normalize.
Damage or a recent drop Do not continue wearing it until a qualified provider has checked the movement and case.
Crown grinds, slips or will not screw down flush Do not force it. Keep the watch away from water and contact the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker.

The decision is easier if you record five facts: how severe the symptom is, whether it repeats, how long a full wind lasts, any suspected magnetism or shock, and the watch’s warranty and service history. Also confirm that the provider is authorized or otherwise experienced with the CW-003.

Is the C1 Loco Classic covered by Christopher Ward’s warranty?

Christopher Ward’s published service document says that, in the rare event of a movement fault within five years, it will repair the movement free under warranty. The document also says the watch must be sent for diagnosis before warranty processing, excludes accidental damage, recommends service every three to four years and states that third-party service or repair voids the guarantee.

Those terms should be checked against the warranty card supplied with your watch and the current policy for your region. Service routing, eligibility and coverage can change, and the C1-specific handbook was not available with a model-specific winding count. If the watch may still be covered, contact Christopher Ward before authorizing work elsewhere.

How can I check the watch without creating another problem?

Use a repeatable, low-risk routine rather than repeatedly operating the crown.

  1. Inspect the outside for a loose crown, visible impact damage or moisture. Do not test water resistance at home.
  2. Unscrew the crown gently and wind clockwise. Stop if the action is abnormal.
  3. Set the time only after the watch is running, then screw the crown fully flush.
  4. Write down the start time and compare the watch with a reliable reference after 24 hours and again over several days.
  5. If checking reserve, do not wind again during the observation period. Note the exact stop time.
  6. Keep those observations with the purchase and service records when contacting Christopher Ward or a qualified watchmaker.

This process separates an empty mainspring from a short reserve or unstable rate while avoiding the damage that can come from forcing a defective winding system.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?

  • Do not pull the crown into hand-setting when you only intend to wind.
  • Do not force a crown that grinds, slips or resists unexpectedly.
  • Do not open the caseback or regulate the movement without proper tools and training.
  • Do not expose the watch to water while the crown is unscrewed or not sitting flush.
  • Do not treat one unusual reading as a diagnosis; repeat the observation under stable conditions.
  • Do not send a watch that may be under warranty to an unauthorized repairer before checking the applicable terms.

What is the practical decision: keep observing or arrange service?

Keep observing only when the watch restarts normally, winds normally, maintains a reserve close to its six-day specification and shows a small, repeatable rate difference within the stated -0/+7 seconds-per-day tolerance. Arrange diagnosis when it will not restart, stops much earlier than expected, changes rate suddenly, remains inaccurate after moving away from suspected magnetism, or has suffered a shock. In every case, secure the screw-down crown after handling and avoid attempting movement repairs at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wind the watch every day even if it has not stopped?

Yes, a hand-wound movement can be topped up, but daily winding does not replace a reserve check because it continually adds power. Turn the crown gently and stop if its feel becomes abnormal; the crown should be screwed fully home afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a six-day reserve mean the watch will run exactly 144 hours?

No. The 144-hour figure is the published CW-003 specification, while actual duration can vary with the movement’s condition, lubrication and service history. A materially shorter result that repeats after a careful full wind is more significant than a small difference from the nominal figure.

What information should I give Christopher Ward or a watchmaker?

Provide the model, movement if known, purchase and warranty details, the date the symptom began, whether the watch was dropped or near a strong magnet, how it was wound, and the measured run time or daily rate. These details help the provider decide whether to investigate winding, magnetism, impact or routine service first.

Is it safe to wear the watch while the crown is unscrewed?

Avoid doing so. An unscrewed crown is not in its normal water-resistant position, so secure it flush before wearing the watch or exposing it to moisture. If the crown will not seat correctly, keep the watch dry and seek service.
