If your luxury watch is stolen, prioritize safety, report the theft to the police, preserve every ownership record, notify your insurer under the policy’s deadlines, and give the serial number and police reference to the manufacturer and a reputable lost-and-stolen registry. Do not confront a suspected thief or attempt a private recovery. A police crime reference, serial number, model details, photographs, invoices and service records form the evidence trail that gives police, insurers and legitimate dealers the best chance of identifying the watch.
What should I do immediately after my luxury watch is stolen?
Get yourself and anyone nearby to safety, then create an official record before trying to trace the watch. Use this order unless emergency services direct you differently.

- Call the emergency channel if the theft is in progress or anyone is at risk. Do not chase the suspect, arrange a meeting or attempt to take the watch back.
- File a report with the police service for the place where the theft occurred. Keep the incident, crime or case reference. New Zealand Police accepts stolen-property reports online and asks for the make, model, colour, size, distinguishing features and serial number; its confirmation reference can support an insurance claim. Singapore Police’s online service likewise requests a serial number and a photograph when applicable.
- Preserve evidence. Save photographs, purchase invoices, warranty or guarantee cards, valuation documents, service records, packaging, CCTV, messages, vehicle details, suspect descriptions and the exact time and location.
- Notify the insurer promptly. Supply the policy number, police reference and every document requested. Describe only what you know; do not guess, embellish or change dates.
- Tell the watch manufacturer. Provide the police report, serial number, model and purchase invoice through the brand’s official service channel.
- Register the loss with a recognized watch database and monitor resale listings through police and the insurer. Treat any apparent match as a lead for investigators, not an invitation to recover the watch yourself.
What details should be in the police report?
The report should identify one specific watch as clearly as possible and explain when, where and how it disappeared. A serial number is particularly valuable, but police can start a report without one if you supply other distinguishing information and update the file later.
Include identifying details
- Brand, reference or model name, case material, dial colour, bracelet or strap, approximate size and distinctive marks.
- Serial number, if known, plus photographs showing the watch, clasp, engraving, scratches or custom work.
- Purchase date, seller, invoice amount, valuation and any service or warranty documentation.
- Exact location, time window, access details, witnesses, suspect description, vehicle information and any missing packaging or accessories.
Keep the reference safe
Save the confirmation email, incident number and the officer’s contact details. Insurers commonly ask for the report or crime reference, and the reference lets you add documents or new sightings to the same investigation rather than opening disconnected reports.

How do I preserve evidence without compromising the case?
Make a read-only record of what you have before contacting sellers, platforms or potential witnesses. Export original CCTV files where possible, keep message headers and preserve screenshots that show the listing URL, seller name, price and date.
Do not edit photographs, crop out identifying information or discard packaging. If a suspected listing appears, copy its URL and take dated screenshots, then send them to the investigating officer and insurer. Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement cautions that database entries can be incomplete or non-unique; an apparent match must be verified with law enforcement.

Avoid public accusations, threats or private meetings. A seller may remove evidence, and an in-person confrontation can create a safety and legal risk even when the listing looks identical to your watch.
When should I notify my insurer, and what will it ask for?
Notify the insurer as soon as you have made the police report, or sooner if the policy provides an emergency claims line. Policy wording controls coverage: theft location, unattended-item exclusions, territorial limits, valuation method, liability limits, claim deadlines and fraud provisions all vary.
Chubb’s Jewellery/Watch Insurance Claim Form, published in February 2025, states: “The Police must be informed immediately if the property has been lost or maliciously damaged.” The form requests a police-report copy, a detailed description, receipts showing the date, price or cost and place of purchase, and details of prompt steps taken to trace or recover the property.
Documents to send with the claim
- Police report or crime reference and the officer or station contact.
- Policy number, schedule and any endorsement that specifically covers watches.
- Original invoice, valuation, warranty card, service invoices and photographs.
- Serial number, model or reference, and descriptions of distinctive alterations or damage.
- Chronology of the theft, including when you discovered it and what steps followed.
- URLs and screenshots of possible resale listings, sent to the claim handler rather than the seller.
Insurance questions to answer before relying on a policy
| Policy issue | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Theft location | Whether theft from a home, vehicle, hotel, workplace, public place or another person’s premises is covered. |
| Unattended property | Whether leaving the watch unattended, even briefly, excludes or limits the claim. |
| Territory | Whether cover is worldwide, limited to named countries or restricted to a residence or travel period. |
| Maximum liability | The per-watch and per-claim limits, including any sub-limit for valuables. |
| Valuation basis | Whether settlement uses a recent agreed value, market value, replacement cost or another method. |
| Settlement form | Whether the insurer replaces the watch through an approved supplier, pays cash, or gives you a choice subject to the policy. |
| Procedure and deadlines | How quickly police notification, written notice and supporting documents are required. |
| Fraud clauses | How inaccurate statements, inflated values or a dishonest claim can void cover or trigger recovery of payments. |
A product-information document for a Watches of Switzerland/Chubb policy describes theft cover in defined circumstances and excludes some unattended or unreported thefts. It also requires prompt police reporting and a crime reference with the claim. Read the wording for your own edition and territory rather than assuming another policy’s terms apply.

Where can I find the serial number if the watch is gone?
Start with records you already hold: the purchase invoice, warranty or guarantee card, valuation, service receipt, insurance schedule and photographs. Manufacturers place serial numbers differently and may use a case, movement, clasp or other component, so do not infer a number from a model or engraving. If you still cannot locate it, tell police and the insurer that it is unknown and ask the brand’s official service channel whether its records can identify the watch from the model, purchase documents and images.
The serial number is the strongest identifier for a particular watch, but it is not proof of current ownership by itself. A number should be considered alongside invoices, dated photographs, service history and the police report.
Should I contact the manufacturer after reporting the theft?
Yes. Send the manufacturer the police report, serial number, model and purchase invoice through an official channel, and ask what record it can place on the watch’s service file.
TAG Heuer’s official theft FAQ requests those documents and says the information may help in some cases. It also makes clear that TAG Heuer cannot recover the watch or remotely block it. Other manufacturers have different procedures and may offer only record-notification or service-history support, so do not promise yourself a remote lock or automatic recovery.

Which lost-and-stolen watch registries should I use?
Use a registry with a documented role for police, insurers and the legitimate watch trade, and read its privacy and verification terms before uploading documents.

Jaeger-LeCoultre describes Enquirus as a free platform where owners can store documents, register serial-numbered watches, report a loss or theft to a worldwide register and search its lost-and-stolen database. Upload the serial number and supporting ownership records exactly as they appear in your documents.

The Watch Register
The City of London Police says its Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department used The Watch Register to check high-value watches at Heathrow. A registry check can help a dealer or investigator identify a risk, but it does not replace a police report or establish ownership on its own.
Why more than one record may matter
Manufacturers, owner registries and police systems are separate sources. Registering with a suitable service and notifying the brand increases the number of legitimate channels that can flag the serial number if the watch enters servicing, insurance or resale.
What should I do if the stolen watch appears for sale?
Stop communicating beyond what is necessary to preserve the listing. Save the URL, seller profile, photographs, description, price, payment instructions and the date and time, then send the package to the investigating officer and insurer.
Do not arrange a test purchase, ask to meet, threaten the seller or attempt a seizure. Police can coordinate with a platform, customs authority or dealer; a private recovery can endanger you, alert a suspect or damage the chain of evidence.
How reliable are serial-number and stolen-watch databases?
They are valuable investigative tools, not conclusive ownership certificates. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement warns that manufacturer- or owner-applied numbers may be duplicated, records may be incomplete or out of date, and users must verify an active report with the agency that entered it.
A “no match” result therefore does not prove that a watch is legitimate, and a “match” does not authorize a private confrontation. Police, insurers and reputable dealers should confirm the report, compare the physical watch and documents, and determine who has lawful authority to act.
Why should buyers and sellers be alert to insurance fraud?
Fraudulent loss claims can put a legitimately purchased watch under suspicion and can raise premiums. In 2024, the City of London Police quoted The Watch Register saying that “One in ten matches on its database show evidence of insurance fraud.” Detective Chief Inspector Tom Hill of the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department said: “Luxury watch insurance fraud contributes to increased premiums and has alarming and inconvenient consequences for buyers who unknowingly purchase a watch that has been used in a bogus claim.”
If you are selling a watch, retain a complete ownership file and disclose any registry or police issue before accepting payment. If you are buying, insist on an invoice, serial-number documentation and a professional database check, and pause the transaction if a police or registry result requires verification.
What is the complete theft-response checklist?
- Get safe and call emergency services if the theft is underway or anyone is threatened.
- File a local police report and retain the crime reference.
- Record the brand, model, serial number, photographs and distinctive features.
- Gather invoices, valuations, warranty cards, service records, packaging and CCTV.
- Notify the insurer within the policy’s stated deadline and provide accurate documents.
- Notify the manufacturer through its official service channel.
- Register the watch with an established lost-and-stolen service where available.
- Send suspected listings to police and the insurer; never attempt private recovery.
- Keep every email, screenshot, reference number and update in one case file.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I do not know the serial number when I make the report?
File the report with the model, photographs, colour, size, distinguishing marks and purchase records, and state clearly that the serial number is unavailable. Ask the police and insurer how to add it later if you find it on a warranty card, service invoice or brand record.
Does a clean database search prove a pre-owned watch is legitimate?
No. Records can be incomplete, outdated or affected by duplicated numbers, so a clear search is only one part of due diligence. Keep the seller’s paperwork and have any concern checked by the relevant police agency or insurer before completing the transaction.
What if the theft happened while I was traveling abroad?
Report it to the police in the place where the theft occurred and retain that jurisdiction’s reference, then contact your insurer promptly about territory and documentation requirements. Keep copies of the report and receipts in case the insurer needs certified or translated records.
Can the manufacturer remotely disable a stolen mechanical watch?
Do not assume it can. TAG Heuer says it cannot recover or remotely block a stolen watch; other brands set their own limits, so the practical protection is an accurate police and registry record linked to the serial number.
