Which Porsche Design watch is in Top Gun: Maverick?
The watch is the Porsche Design Chronograph 1, a design that dates to 1972. Porsche Design says a military chronograph from its 1970s line appeared on Cruise’s wrist in both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick (Porsche Design, 2024). Porsche Cars Australia likewise identifies the Chronograph 1 as the watch Cruise wore in the original Top Gun (Christophorus, 2025).
That establishes the model family and its film connection, not every detail of the prop. The official sources do not specify the exact vintage reference or movement seen on screen, so claims naming a particular reference or caliber should be treated cautiously.
Why the Chronograph 1 became an icon
Designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the Chronograph 1 was Porsche Design’s first product, introduced in 1972. The brand describes it as the world’s first all-black wristwatch. Its functional, high-contrast chronograph layout and dark treatment make it visually distinctive, but the film association is with the historic design—not automatically with the specifications of a watch sold today.

Porsche Design’s modern releases reinterpret that original. The 2022 Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition was limited to 500 pieces and sold out, according to the company. Porsche Design then presented the All Black Numbered Edition as a further-developed successor, announcing a maximum production of 1,000 watches per year worldwide and a €8,950 price at that time (Porsche Design, 2022). Those are historical release details, not a promise of current availability or pricing.
Modern Chronograph 1 editions and announced prices
In 2026, Porsche Design announced two editions with availability from June 2026: the Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition and Chronograph 1 – All Titanium Numbered Edition. The brand’s recommended retail prices were €6,950 and €6,450, respectively. It named porsche.com, Porsche Design Stores, participating Porsche Centers, and selected watch retailers as sales channels (Porsche Design, 2026). These are announced euro RRPs; check the relevant market and seller for current local price, stock, and availability.

The modern All Black Numbered Edition has an all-black design, titanium construction, and anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Porsche Design says it is made at the company’s in-house watchmaking facility in Solothurn, Switzerland, and uses the mechanical, COSC-certified WERK 01.140 chronometer movement (Porsche Design, 2022). These are modern-edition specifications; they should not be attributed to the vintage watch used in the film.

If you want the look and lineage, the modern Chronograph 1 is the straightforward option. It is a contemporary descendant, not the literal screen-used vintage watch. Porsche Design’s official channels and the participating retailers named in its 2026 announcement are the appropriate places to check for new editions.

A vintage Porsche Design / Orfina Chronograph 1 may appeal if you want a watch closer to the era of the original film. Before buying, check the exact reference against reputable specialist documentation, and assess the individual listing rather than relying on a movie association alone:
- Confirm the reference and configuration with specialist documentation; the exact screen reference is not confirmed by the official sources cited here.
- Review condition, service history, and authenticity evidence for the specific watch.
- For a new edition, confirm current regional price, availability, warranty, and whether the seller is an authorized channel.
