The Imperial Household Agency did not publicly confirm the items interred with him in the same-day report, so the watch’s burial is a reported claim—not an officially verified fact.
What watch was Hirohito reportedly buried with?
A Mickey Mouse watch, according to a United Press International report published on February 24, 1989, the day of Hirohito’s funeral. UPI said the Imperial Household Agency refused to identify the burial items, and described the watch as one of the objects reportedly buried with him. Read UPI’s February 24, 1989 report.
That distinction matters: the contemporary report supports the identification as a Mickey Mouse watch, but it does not establish an official inventory or prove that the watch was placed in the tomb.
Why is Hirohito associated with a Mickey Mouse watch?
Hirohito visited Disneyland in 1975. In a January 16, 1989 article, TIME wrote that “For years thereafter, a Mickey Mouse watch could be seen on the imperial wrist.” The article supports the claim that he wore a Mickey Mouse watch, but it does not identify its maker or model. #1 Best Overall
- Designed with Mickey Mouse on the dial, helping kids learn to tell time with labeled hour and minute hands
- Soft red silicone strap offers a snug, comfortable fit ideal for daily wear and active play

The link between the watch and the burial comes from UPI’s later, qualified reporting. Wearing the watch after the Disneyland visit and being reportedly buried with it are related claims, but they are not the same evidence.
What is officially known about the funeral?
The Imperial Household Agency records that Hirohito, referred to in its record as Emperor Showa, died on January 7, 1989. It lists the state ceremony Taiso-no-Rei and the Imperial House funeral and entombment rites, Renso-no-Gi, on February 24, 1989. The agency’s event record documents the dates and ceremony classifications, not a list of personal objects buried with him. See the Imperial Household Agency’s event record.

Do we know the watch’s brand or model?
No. The contemporary TIME and UPI accounts identify it only as a Mickey Mouse watch; neither gives a manufacturer, model, or reference number. Time & Tide’s 2021 article describes it as an official Disney watch presented during Hirohito’s 1975 visit, but that presentation detail is not verified by the contemporary sources cited above. Read Time & Tide’s 2021 account.
As a result, no current Mickey Mouse watch can be identified as an exact match or verified replica of Hirohito’s watch from the available accounts.
