A watch index is a marker on the dial that helps you locate the hours and read where the hands point. Indices can replace numerals, mark minutes, or simply provide visual reference points; they do not make a watch more accurate.
How a dial index helps you read the time
An index is a guide mark indicating a position on a dial or scale. On a watch, hour indices show the points around the dial where the hours fall. Smaller marks may divide the spaces between them into minutes. The hands move against these references, making it easier to orient yourself and read the time at a glance.
As Horopedia explains, an index may be printed onto the dial or made as a separate applied marker. The arrangement and style also shape the watch’s appearance.
Common dial markers and layouts
| Dial feature | What it means | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Printed indices | Marks printed or transferred onto the dial surface. | The flat, simple design can be easy to scan when the marks contrast clearly with the dial. |
| Applied indices | Separate raised markers attached to the dial. | The added depth can catch light, though reflections may affect how easily a mark is seen. |
| Luminous markers | Indices containing luminescent material. | They may help in low light. Check whether the markers themselves are luminous and consider their contrast with the hands and dial. |
| Numerals | Hours displayed as numbers, such as Arabic or Roman numerals. | Numbers make hour positions explicit, while their style also contributes to the dial’s character. |
| Open dial | A face with no hour markers. | The sparse look offers fewer reference points for a quick time check. |
| Skeleton dial | A design that exposes parts of the movement through the dial. | The visible mechanism adds detail, but can compete with the hands for a clear background. |
Which index style is easiest to read?
There is no universally best marker style. Readability depends on how clearly the hands and markers stand out against the dial, how quickly you can identify the hour positions, and whether you need visibility in low light. A busy background or reflective surfaces can make the hands harder to distinguish, even when the indices are prominent.

Nixon’s guide to analog watch-face types recommends bold Arabic numerals or applied indices with lume when quick legibility is a priority. That is the manufacturer’s design guidance, not an independent comparative test. If you are choosing a watch, compare the whole dial: hand visibility, marker contrast, lighting needs, and whether you prefer a simple printed face, raised details, numerals, or a more open design.

In watchmaking, “index” has a separate technical meaning: it can refer to a lever inside a mechanical movement used to adjust the watch’s rate. Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the regulator index as a device that adjusts rate by changing the effective length of the balance spring. This movement component is not the same thing as an hour index on the dial, and dial markers do not regulate a watch’s accuracy.

What to look for when choosing a dial
- For fast reading, look for hands and markers that stand out clearly from the dial.
- If you often check the time in dim conditions, verify that the hour markers are luminous rather than assuming they glow.
- Choose printed or applied details, numerals, or a marker-free face according to the balance of readability and appearance you prefer.
