Reports associate it with update, linking, or chat-sync failures, but the available sources do not establish one cause or a universal fix. Start by updating WhatsApp on the watch and phone, checking for a watch system update, and restarting both devices; reinstall WhatsApp on the watch if the problem persists.
What the “obsolete version” error looks like
Readers have reported messages such as “app is obsolete” or “update the new version,” sometimes alongside a Play Store listing with no update available. Reported problems include failed updates, linking trouble, and chats that do not finish syncing. These are user reports, not a confirmed diagnosis that applies to every watch.
First note where the failure occurs: when opening WhatsApp, linking the watch, or loading chats. That detail can help support distinguish an app-update problem from a linking or synchronization problem.
Is WhatsApp supported on Galaxy Watch?
WhatsApp support guidance includes selected Wear OS smartwatches among devices that can be linked to a primary device. It does not provide a complete, current compatibility list for every Galaxy Watch model. The “obsolete version” message alone does not show that your watch is unsupported.

How to fix WhatsApp’s obsolete-version error
1. Update WhatsApp on the watch and phone
- Open Google Play Store on the watch and check for WhatsApp updates.
- Check the phone’s app store for a WhatsApp update and install it if available.
- If the watch Play Store offers no update, record what it displays and continue with the other steps rather than assuming the app is current or unsupported.
Google’s Wear OS instructions recommend checking for updates on the watch. The update process can vary by manufacturer and software version.
2. Check for a watch system update
Check the watch’s system settings for an available software update and install it if offered. Google notes that update steps vary by device and software version; some updates may install while the watch is charging. Follow the instructions shown for your model.

Samsung does not say that this update fixes the WhatsApp error, so do not treat it as a WhatsApp-specific remedy.
