What they do explain is how VEJA built its production model—and why sourcing choices and careful manufacturing claims are not the same as proof that a shoe lasts longer.
What year did VEJA’s shoes get good?
No specific year is established. VEJA’s project account dates its sneaker project to 2004. The sources available here do not document a subsequent change in quality, compare shoes from different production years, or provide representative measurements of durability, comfort, or defect rates.
That distinction matters because “good” can mean several things: comfortable fit, materials that suit a wearer’s needs, fewer manufacturing defects, or a long service life. Evidence about VEJA’s sourcing and production process helps explain how the company makes shoes, but it does not settle those performance questions.
What VEJA says distinguishes its production
Materials and sourcing
VEJA describes using Brazilian and Peruvian organic or agroecological cotton, Amazonian rubber, and recycled or other alternative materials. The precise material mix varies by model, so a brand-wide description should not be mistaken for a specification applying to every shoe. The company’s project page presents these choices as part of its approach to social projects, economic justice, and ecological materials.

Independent reporting offers a dated example of one supply chain. On 19 January 2023, the Associated Press reported that VEJA’s Amazonian rubber came through Cooperacre and a network of approximately 1,200 families in 22 cooperatives across five Amazonian states. The AP described rubber processing in Acre and shipment to contracted factories in southern and northeastern Brazil. Those figures describe the network reported at that time, not necessarily its current size. The article also quoted rubber-supply-chain manager Sebastião Pereira describing a price to tappers that included bonuses for sustainable harvesting and recognition of forest preservation (Associated Press report).
Manual work is a process detail, not a durability test
VEJA’s FAQ states: “It takes more than 100 different manual actions to manufacture a VEJA shoe.” That is the company’s description of its manufacturing process. Without comparative evidence about quality control or outcomes, the number of actions cannot show that a VEJA shoe is more durable than another shoe—or that the brand’s products improved in a particular year.

What the brand’s own account says about trade-offs
VEJA’s Limits page describes decisions that complicate a simple story of steady material improvement. The company says plant- and mineral-based dyes used in 2012 and 2013 on 40% of production did not meet its color-quality standards. It says it returned to conventional dyes for more stable color, while stating that those dyes comply with safety regulations. This is VEJA’s account of its choices, not an independent assessment of the dyes or of shoe performance.
The same page says VEJA made all its leather traceable, sourced exclusively from non-deforested areas and mainly from organic farms. Traceability and sourcing standards may matter to buyers, but they do not by themselves establish how long a shoe lasts. Sustainable sourcing, material origin, and durability are distinct questions.

How to judge a VEJA shoe for your needs
Rather than treating the brand as having one uniform quality level, evaluate the specific model and the use you have in mind. Upper material, construction, intended use, fit, care requirements, repair options, and applicable warranty terms are more useful decision points than a supposed brand-wide turning point.
- Check the model’s materials. Different materials have different care needs; follow the product-specific guidance rather than assuming every VEJA shoe can be cleaned the same way.
- Match the shoe to its use. The sources cited here do not provide comparative performance tests, so consider the intended use and seek clearly identified model-specific fit or comfort information.
- Separate care from construction. VEJA’s FAQ describes cleaning and protection products developed with Act of Caring. Care may help maintain a shoe’s appearance, but it is not evidence that it will prevent construction failure or extend service life.
- Check the warranty before buying. VEJA’s stated direct-store coverage is limited to manufacturing defects and has conditions; it should not be read as a promise of a particular lifespan.
What the available consumer discussion can tell you
Online discussion includes both critical and positive owner accounts, but individual posts are anecdotal and may concern different models, conditions, or periods of use. Threads titled “VEJA: bad quality shoes?” and “Veja shoes: bad quality?” illustrate the range of consumer phrasing, not a representative quality survey. They cannot establish that VEJA’s shoes improved—or declined—as a brand.
