Apple Watch ECG works on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models; Apple Watch SE models are excluded. Whether you can use it also depends on ECG availability in your country or region, and setup requires a paired iPhone and compatible software.
Before buying a watch specifically for ECG, check Apple’s ECG support guidance and its watchOS feature-availability list for your location.
Apple Watch models with ECG
Apple’s compatibility rule is Series 4 or later, plus all Apple Watch Ultra models. Apple Watch SE is not supported. The Series 4 introduced the electrical heart sensor used for ECG; the app creates a recording using the electrodes in the Digital Crown and the rear of the watch.
| Model family | ECG support | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 4 or later | Yes | All Series models from Series 4 onward are eligible, subject to regional availability and setup requirements. |
| Apple Watch Ultra | Yes | Apple includes all Ultra models. |
| Apple Watch SE | No | SE models are excluded, even though they may include other health features. |
| Apple Watch Series 3 or earlier | No | These models fall outside Apple’s Series 4-or-later compatibility rule. |
Apple’s ECG support article gives the compatible model rule. Do not infer ECG support from optical heart-rate monitoring or other health features alone.

Does Apple Watch SE have ECG?
No. Apple Watch SE models do not support the ECG app. “Series 4 or later” refers to the Series model family, not every Apple Watch released after Series 4. If ECG is essential, choose a Series 4-or-later model or an Ultra, and confirm that the feature is available in your location.
What to check before buying
ECG support is not determined by a single specification. Confirm these points before purchase:
- Model family: Choose Series 4 or later or an Apple Watch Ultra. Avoid SE if ECG is required.
- Country or region: ECG is available only in supported locations, and availability can change. Check Apple’s live feature-availability list.
- iPhone and software: Use a paired iPhone and update the iPhone and watch to the latest software they support.
- Setup: ECG must be set up in the Health app on iPhone before you can take a recording.
How to set up the ECG app
- Update the paired iPhone to the latest iOS it supports and Apple Watch to the latest watchOS it supports.
- Open the Health app on iPhone.
- Tap Browse, then Heart.
- Tap Electrocardiograms (ECG).
- Tap Set Up ECG App and follow the onscreen instructions.
If ECG still does not appear on the watch, open the iPhone’s Watch app, tap Heart, and install ECG from the ECG section if that option is available. Apple says the ECG app is not intended for people under 22.

The ECG app creates a waveform similar to a single-lead (Lead I) ECG and checks a recording for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). It is an on-demand recording, not a continuous ECG monitor. A sinus-rhythm result describes that particular recording; it does not establish that you are healthy.
Apple says the ECG app cannot detect a heart attack, stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, high cholesterol, or other forms of arrhythmia. It is not a substitute for clinical evaluation. If you have chest pain or think you may be having a heart attack, contact emergency services; seek medical advice if you feel unwell or have symptoms.

ECG versions and heart-rate ranges
ECG app features and version availability can differ by region because of local regulations. Apple documents different AFib classification ranges for ECG versions 1 and 2:
| ECG app version | Documented AFib-check range |
|---|---|
| Version 1 | 50–120 beats per minute (BPM) |
| Version 2 | 50–150 BPM |
These are app classification ranges, not general definitions of a normal heart rate. To check your version, open Settings > Heart > ECG on Apple Watch, or Health > Browse > Heart > ECG > About on iPhone. See Apple’s ECG app version guidance.

- Keep the band snug so the back of the watch contacts your wrist.
- Rest your arms and stay still for the full recording.
- Make sure your wrist, hand, and watch are clean and dry.
- Move away from plugged-in electronics that could cause electrical interference.
- After swimming, showering, heavy sweating, or hand-washing, allow the watch to dry; Apple says this may take an hour or more.
Some people may not produce a strong enough signal, and a clean-looking reading does not rule out conditions the app cannot detect. Discuss concerning or repeated results with a healthcare professional.
How to share an ECG with a doctor
- Open the Health app on iPhone.
- Tap Browse, then Heart.
- Tap Electrocardiograms (ECG) and select a recording.
- Choose the option to export a PDF for your doctor.
- Use the share controls to send, print, or save the PDF.
The recording is a single-lead ECG and is not equivalent to a standard clinical 12-lead ECG.

Apple reports that a clinical trial of approximately 600 subjects found 99.6% specificity for sinus-rhythm classification and 98.3% sensitivity for AFib classification among classifiable results. These figures are not a blanket accuracy claim: Apple cautions that real-world use can produce more inconclusive or unclassifiable recordings.
