Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with three changes: limit wrist alerts to the apps you need, hide notification details or stop the screen waking if your watch offers those options, and review device diagnostic-sharing controls. If battery life is the priority, consider turning off the always-on display before restricting connectivity or using a power-saving mode. The available controls and menu names vary by watch, model, region, and software version.
What should you turn off first?
Begin with the settings that reduce interruptions and visible personal information without disrupting the watch’s basic functions. Then review device-level diagnostic reporting. Make more restrictive display, connectivity, or power-saving changes only if you need additional battery life or a quieter watch.
- Filter notifications by app. Keep wrist alerts for apps that need your immediate attention.
- Limit what appears on the screen. If supported, hide notification details and prevent alerts from waking the display.
- Review diagnostic sharing. Check the privacy or system-privacy settings available for your watch.
- Adjust battery settings if needed. Try disabling the always-on display before cutting connections or enabling a mode that limits features.
There is no universal battery-life gain for these changes: the official guidance describes tradeoffs, not a single improvement that applies to every watch.
How do you stop smartwatch notifications from showing message previews?
First decide which apps should send notifications to your wrist. Fewer alerts mean fewer interruptions, and limiting displayed details can reduce the chance that someone nearby sees message content. The available controls differ by platform.

Samsung Galaxy Watch
In the Galaxy Wearable app, open Watch settings > Notifications > App notifications and turn off apps that do not need to alert you on the watch. Samsung also documents advanced controls named Show with details, which displays new notification details automatically, and Turn on screen, which wakes the display when a notification arrives. Turning off these options can make alerts less revealing and prevent each alert from lighting the screen. Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by model or provider. See Samsung’s notification instructions.
Apple Watch
Manage notification preferences in the Watch app on your iPhone or in Settings on the watch. On supported models, the Always On settings separately control whether notifications and selected app information appear when your wrist is down. This lets you reduce what is visible at a glance without necessarily turning off Always On altogether. Apple notes that some settings are available only in the iPhone app; see Apple’s settings guide.

Wear OS
For a temporary quiet period, use Do Not Disturb from quick settings. Theater mode temporarily turns off the screen. These modes are useful for a meeting or sleep, but they are not a replacement for choosing which apps may send alerts when per-app controls are available. Google’s Wear OS getting-started instructions list quick settings including Do Not Disturb, theater mode, and airplane mode. Exact options vary by watch, and instructions can differ by Wear OS version.
Which smartwatch privacy setting should you review?
Look for a device-level usage, diagnostics, or system-privacy control, but do not assume that one setting governs every kind of data collection. Google documents a specific Usage and diagnostic reports control for Pixel Watch; the cited path and scope should not be generalized to other brands.

Pixel Watch usage and diagnostics
In the paired Watch app, go to Privacy and legal > System privacy settings > Usage and diagnostic reports. When enabled, Google says the watch can send device-associated performance and usage-pattern information. Its examples include battery and thermal performance, sensor performance, software stability, app-use frequency, and the quality and length of mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections. On supported versions, this information can also be connected with the associated Google Account.
Turning this control off does not stop apps from collecting their own information, and essential services such as receiving a new Wear OS version continue. The documented steps have version requirements: some require Android 8.0 or later or Pixel Watch Android companion app version 4.1 or later; Google describes account linking for Android 15 or later with companion app version 4.1 or later. Check Google’s Pixel Watch usage and diagnostics instructions for the requirements that apply to your setup.

Which settings are worth changing for battery life?
Start with the display if you want more runtime while preserving connectivity. Turning off an always-on display sacrifices glanceable information, while restricting network connections or using power-saving features can affect more functions. Support documentation does not establish a universal runtime increase for any of these changes.
Always-on display
Apple says disabling Always On can increase battery life. On supported models, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On. That screen also lets you choose whether complication data, Live Activities, notifications, or apps appear while your wrist is down. Always On is model-specific; Apple lists Apple Watch Series 5 and later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra and later as models where the feature is enabled by default. Confirm that your particular model supports it. See Apple’s Always On instructions.

Samsung likewise recommends turning off Always On Display in its Galaxy Watch battery guidance.
Connectivity and power-saving modes
Samsung describes turning off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or mobile-network connections as battery-saving options, but warns that apps and features needing those connections may stop working. Turning off Bluetooth disconnects the watch from the phone. Samsung’s Power saving mode limits performance and connectivity: its guidance says the screen goes grayscale and Wi-Fi and mobile data turn off, while calls, messages, and Bluetooth notifications remain available as described on its support page.
Wear OS airplane mode turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data; theater mode temporarily turns off the screen. Use these as situational controls rather than blanket defaults: the right choice depends on whether you need the watch connected, visible, or able to deliver alerts.
How to choose a practical setup
| Priority | Setting to review | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer interruptions | Turn off wrist notifications for nonessential apps; use Do Not Disturb for a temporary quiet period where available. | You may miss alerts you have chosen not to receive. |
| Less visible message content | Hide notification details or adjust wrist-down notification visibility where supported. | You may need to raise your wrist or open an alert to see its contents. |
| More battery runtime | Consider turning off Always On before restricting connectivity. | The screen provides less glanceable information while the wrist is down. |
| Maximum battery conservation | Consider a power-saving or connectivity mode when its limitations are acceptable. | Performance, connections, or features may be limited or unavailable. |
| Device reporting privacy | Review the usage and diagnostics control if your watch provides one. | The effect is limited to the scope of that control; it does not necessarily govern app data collection. |
Where to find the controls—and why menus may differ
Check both the watch’s Settings app and its paired phone app. Apple says settings can be managed on the watch or in the iPhone Watch app, with some controls available only in the app. Samsung’s notification controls may be in Galaxy Wearable or directly on the watch. Google warns that Wear OS instructions can vary by version, and the Pixel Watch diagnostics path has Android and companion-app requirements. Model, provider, region, and software changes can also alter the labels or available options.
