It also expanded the system beyond the wrist with WHOOP Body apparel. Those were meaningful changes for an existing member who wanted more comfortable continuous wear; they did not turn WHOOP into a smartwatch or remove its membership costs. As of August 2026, WHOOP 4.0 is previous-generation hardware, not the current model.
What launched with WHOOP 4.0?
WHOOP announced the 4.0 sensor and WHOOP Body on September 8, 2021. The launch paired a smaller, screen-free tracker with sensor-compatible garments and accessories designed to let members wear it on the torso, waist, or calf as well as the wrist. WHOOP called this system Any-Wear technology. WHOOP’s launch announcement described it as a 24/7 wearable built around continuous data collection and coaching.
| Launch detail | WHOOP 4.0 |
|---|---|
| Announced | September 8, 2021 |
| Size | WHOOP said it was 33% smaller than 3.0; manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement |
| Battery | Five-day life claimed by WHOOP; actual duration varies |
| Optical sensor package | Five LEDs (three green, one red, one infrared) and four photodiodes |
| Newly highlighted sensing | Blood-oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and skin temperature |
| Sleep feature | Sleep Coach with haptic wake-up alerts |
| Charging | Waterproof Battery Pack 4.0 designed to charge while the sensor is worn |
| Wear options | Wrist bands and WHOOP Body apparel/accessories for alternative placements |
| Sales model | Sensor included with membership rather than positioned as a conventional standalone tracker |
How the hardware changed from WHOOP 3.0
Smaller body and more sensor elements
WHOOP’s launch claim was that the 4.0 was 33% smaller than the 3.0 while retaining a five-day battery rating. The reduced size helped make the sensor easier to conceal and more practical to integrate into clothing. WHOOP also specified five LEDs—three green, one red, and one infrared—plus four photodiodes, and said updated algorithms were intended to improve heart-rate measurement.
That description establishes WHOOP’s hardware configuration and design goal, not universal accuracy gains. Optical readings can be affected by movement, fit, skin contact, and body location; the announcement does not establish equal performance during every sport or at every Any-Wear placement.

Charging without removing the tracker
The redesigned Battery Pack 4.0 was waterproof and slid onto the sensor while it remained on the body. That is more consequential than a battery-life number alone: it lets a wearer top up without creating a deliberate gap in sleep or recovery tracking. WHOOP also said its battery technology had 17% higher energy density than 3.0. Both that figure and the five-day life are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed real-world outcomes; battery age, usage, firmware, temperature, and charging habits can change runtime.
What the new health and sleep features do
SpO₂, skin temperature, and Health Monitor
WHOOP 4.0 added pulse oximetry for blood-oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and skin-temperature measurement. Its Health Monitor brought together readings such as heart rate, skin temperature, SpO₂, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), and respiratory rate. These are wellness signals useful for following patterns and changes from a personal baseline, not a diagnosis. A single SpO₂ or temperature reading should not be treated as a substitute for medical evaluation.
WHOOP 4.0 should not be confused with later medical-oriented capabilities. ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, and blood-pressure insights are associated with WHOOP Life/MG offerings and may be regionally restricted; they are not features to attribute to ordinary 4.0 hardware. WHOOP’s current membership and upgrade information describes current feature and hardware distinctions.

Sleep Coach with haptic alarms
Sleep Coach added a screen-free way to wake: the band could vibrate at a selected time based on sleep needs and sleep-cycle information. It may suit someone trying to align wake-ups with a recovery routine, or who would rather not rely on a phone alarm. Its value depends on whether WHOOP’s recommendations work well for that individual and whether a wrist vibration is an acceptable alarm.

WHOOP Body launched as a collection of sensor-compatible clothing and accessories, including sports bras, compression tops, leggings, shorts, and athletic boxers. WHOOP announced launch prices from $54 to $109; those were original announced prices, not current prices. Fast Link made it possible to swap bands and apparel attachments, while the company described Any-Wear Detection as a way to identify where the sensor was being worn. WHOOP also announced SuperKnit and planned HydroKnit bands.
Alternative placement is useful if a wrist band is uncomfortable during sleep or inconvenient for a particular activity. But “wear it anywhere” describes compatibility, not proof that every location produces equally reliable data. Fit, skin contact, motion, and location can affect optical signal quality. For current 4.0 owners, WHOOP’s US shop lists 4.0-compatible bands; its displayed examples include SuperKnit at $49 and SportFlex or CloudKnit options at $59, which can change over time. Check generation compatibility before buying accessories: 4.0 bands are not compatible with WHOOP 5.0, according to Tom’s Guide’s WHOOP 5.0 coverage.

How much WHOOP 4.0 cost—and what membership means
At launch, WHOOP advertised membership starting at $18 per month and included the 4.0 hardware with membership. That was 2021 pricing, not today’s rate. “Included” did not mean the service was free: access to WHOOP’s analytics, coaching, and ongoing platform depended on an active membership.
As of August 2026, WHOOP’s US billing page lists annual plans at these prices. Prices and plan details can vary by geography and change; memberships are generally billed annually and auto-renew by default, while monthly options may depend on location and account status. WHOOP’s billing-cycle page has current terms.
| Current US plan | Annual price (August 2026) | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| WHOOP One | $199 | Essential fitness and recovery tracking |
| WHOOP Peak | $239 | Adds Stress Monitor, Health Monitor, and other features |
| WHOOP Life | $359 | ECG, AFib notifications, and blood-pressure insights, subject to regional availability |
These current prices should not be used as WHOOP 4.0 launch prices. WHOOP’s current US signup page promotes 5.0 hardware with One and Peak and WHOOP MG with Life. Over two or three years, the membership commitment matters more to the cost calculation than the original sensor’s included price.

Should a WHOOP 3.0 member have upgraded?
Upgrade made sense if the 3.0’s limits mattered
- You wanted a smaller sensor for more comfortable continuous wear.
- You wanted SpO₂, skin-temperature trends, or the haptic Sleep Coach alarm.
- You planned to use WHOOP Body or wear the sensor away from your wrist.
- Your 3.0 hardware or battery was aging, and you already accepted recurring membership costs.
Staying with 3.0 could be reasonable
- Your main needs were basic strain, recovery, sleep, and HRV tracking.
- You were satisfied with the existing fit and battery experience and did not need the newer sensing or alarm features.
- Replacing accessories or changing membership terms would make an upgrade poor value for your situation.
The launch-era upgrade was strongest for members who valued comfort, uninterrupted wear, and the new sleep and sensing functions—not for someone whose 3.0 already met the same needs. Since 4.0 is now superseded, a new buyer should compare the current membership and hardware rather than treating discounted 4.0 as the default long-term choice.
WHOOP 4.0 versus current WHOOP hardware
WHOOP 4.0 is no longer the company’s current-generation device. The current US site markets WHOOP 5.0, which it says has a 14-plus-day battery, and WHOOP MG for Life members. Existing 4.0 owners can consult WHOOP’s membership extension and upgrade policy for applicable options. Current models, tiers, and regional feature availability are subject to change; WHOOP’s US membership page shows the current offer.
Is WHOOP 4.0 a smartwatch alternative?
No. It is a screen-free recovery and fitness tracker, not a general-purpose watch. It does not replace a display for notifications, maps, music controls, contactless payments, or on-device workout stats, and it is not the right pick if built-in GPS is essential. Its appeal is continuous wear and recovery-oriented coaching.

| Choose this direction | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WHOOP membership | Screenless continuous wear, recovery, strain, and coaching | Recurring membership; no smartwatch display or built-in GPS |
| Oura Ring 4 | Sleep-first users who prefer discreet ring wear | Not a wrist tracker; ring wear can be inconvenient for strength work or contact sports |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | iPhone users wanting apps, notifications, and general smartwatch functions | Screen-based experience and more frequent charging than WHOOP’s claimed multi-day cycle |
| Garmin watch | Runners and endurance athletes prioritizing built-in GPS, sports support, and training metrics | Watch-based, less focused on WHOOP’s screenless recovery-coaching model |
For US readers, Oura’s Ring 4 product page lists five-to-eight-day claimed battery life, while its membership pricing page lists $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annually; terms and introductory offers can change. Apple’s buying page lists the SE 3 from $249 in the US. Garmin’s core app is described as free in comparison coverage, though optional premium features and prices depend on model; check the chosen product’s details. See Oura Ring 4, Oura US membership information, Apple’s Watch buying page, and TechRadar’s fitness tracker comparison.
Verdict
WHOOP 4.0 earned the “pretty big upgrades” description in 2021 because it changed more than the sensor: it improved the continuous-wear workflow, added new wellness measurements and a haptic sleep alarm, and made clothing-based placement part of the product. Its value depended on wanting those benefits enough to keep paying for membership. In 2026, it remains relevant mainly to existing members needing support or accessories; new buyers should compare current WHOOP hardware and pricing with a ring, smartwatch, or GPS sports watch that better matches their priorities.
