That connection is real, but it is not proof that every Oyster Prince is a Rolex or contains Rolex-made parts. The exact reference and individual watch matter—and without a specific purchase price and date, no “without the price tag” comparison can be verified.
What the Oyster Prince was—and what Rolex endorsed
Tudor dates the Oyster Prince’s launch to 1952. In a historical statement reproduced by Tudor, Hans Wilsdorf said the new line would share two features with Rolex: the waterproof Oyster case and the self-winding Perpetual rotor. He described this as his personal endorsement of the TUDOR Prince.
That is the substantive basis for calling the watch Rolex-endorsed: Wilsdorf explicitly backed the line and its use of those two features. It does not make a Tudor Oyster Prince a Rolex. The watch remains a Tudor, and the precise parts and movement depend on its reference and configuration.
“Oyster Prince” covers different watches
Oyster Prince is a family name, not one specification. Tudor’s histories document several models with distinct movements and Rolex-signed components. These are examples, not specifications that can be assigned to an unidentified Oyster Prince.

| Documented example | What Tudor records | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Oyster Prince Submariner ref. 7922, presented in 1954 | Tudor describes a screw-down case and crown, a Rolex-signed crown and Oyster-type bracelet, self-winding Calibre 390, and a waterproofness guarantee to 100 metres. | Rolex-signed components are documented for this specific Submariner example; its specifications should not be generalized to other Oyster Princes. |
| Oyster Prince Ranger ref. 7995/0, 1967 | Tudor describes a 34 mm steel case, ETA Calibre 2483, a caseback engraved “ORIGINAL OYSTER CASE BY ROLEX GENEVA,” and a Rolex-signed clasp. | The documented Rolex markings apply to the caseback inscription and clasp, while Tudor identifies an ETA movement. |
| Date+Day ref. 7017/0 example | Tudor describes a caseback engraving identifying an original Rolex Oyster case, an A.S. Calibre 1895, and a Rolex-signed clasp. | Case and clasp details do not establish that the movement was made by Rolex. |
Tudor’s retrospective history also notes that the rose in its logo gave way to the shield from 1969. Its histories describe Tudor-branded dials and movements alongside Rolex-signed case or bracelet elements on particular watches. Branding on one component should not be treated as a description of every component.
Why the history can matter to a buyer
The appeal is not simply “a Rolex for less.” A buyer may value the Oyster Prince’s place in Tudor’s history, the Oyster case and rotor connection described by Wilsdorf, or the specific design and proportions of a particular reference. The documented examples also show that some vintage Tudors carry Rolex-signed components without being Rolex watches.

The “without the price tag” part needs a real comparison. It depends on the exact Tudor and Rolex references, condition, originality, service history, purchase date, and market. No current comparable prices or particular purchase price are established here, so a specific saving should not be claimed.
What to establish before buying a vintage example
Because the name covers multiple references and configurations, assess the individual watch rather than relying on the family label. Ask for clear photographs and records, and have claims about signatures or originality checked against the specific reference.

- Accurate Measurements: The band is 7 inches long with the clasp closed and fits wrists up to 8.5 inches. Features removable screw links for easy adjustment and a weight of over 58 grams.
- Quality Materials: Made from durable 316L stainless steel with a matte finish and solid links, this heavy-duty band offers exceptional quality and longevity compared to lower-grade alternatives.
- Versatile Design: Includes an interchangeable clasp and removable screw links for a customizable fit. Note: Does not fit Tudor Prince or pre-1970s models due to different end piece shapes.
- Additional Details: Comes with 2 spring bars. Designed to withstand daily wear, ensuring reliability and durability for your timepiece.
- Reference and identity: Confirm the reference and whether the dial, case, bracelet, and movement are appropriate to that model.
- Originality: Establish which components are original, replaced, refinished, or aftermarket. A Rolex signature on one part does not authenticate the whole watch.
- Condition: Inspect the case, crown, bracelet, dial, and movement. Wear, polishing, damage, and replacement parts can affect both desirability and future work.
- Service history: Request dated service documentation and details of work performed. If records are absent, do not assume the watch is ready for regular use.
- Price comparison: Compare recent, genuinely similar examples in the same geography and condition, and account for any service or repair needs. A headline price alone does not establish value.
Servicing and ownership
Tudor says an official service centre examines the case, bracelet, and movement, diagnoses the work required, and provides an itemised estimate before service. Its guidance says servicing should be handled by an Official Rolex or Tudor Service Centre. That process can help identify the condition of a particular watch, but it does not establish in advance which original parts are available or what the work will cost.

Tudor also recounts a 1953 campaign in which Oyster Princes were worn during demanding work and activities. The brand reports 252 hours of hand excavation by a coal miner, 30 hours of pneumatic-drill vibration, three months worn by a stonecutter, one month worn while riveting metal girders, and 1,000 miles worn by a motorcycle racer. These are Tudor’s historical campaign claims, not independent modern test results or a guarantee of the condition of a surviving vintage watch.

The strongest reason to consider an Oyster Prince is therefore specific: its own reference, documented components, condition, and price may make it the right Tudor for a buyer. Wilsdorf’s endorsement gives the family a genuine Rolex connection, but the individual watch—not the name alone—determines what that connection means.
