Buzz Aldrin’s reported reason is that three watches make it easier to spot a disagreement: “You need an odd number in case there is a discrepancy so you can sort out which one is what.” Time+Tide attributed that explanation to Aldrin in a 2023 article. The publication is the source for the quote; a primary recording or transcript has not been established.
Which three watches were identified?
In its 22 July 2023 report, Time+Tide identified the watches in a breakfast photograph as three Omega models:
- Omega Skywalker X-33
- Omega X-33 Marstimer Chronograph
- Omega Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Speedmaster
That is the publication’s identification of the watches in the photograph; it is not an independently verified identification from a primary image source. The named Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Speedmaster should not be confused with a claim that a current Moonwatch model appears in the image.
Was wearing three watches an Apollo 11 procedure?
No. NASA’s Apollo 11 records describe a different, mission-specific use for a wristwatch: a backup for the mission timer, not three watches worn together. In the technical crew debrief’s discussion of EVA preparation, the crew explained the backup purpose: “We would have at least one working watch to back up the mission timer or to use in place of the mission timer, in case we could not get it going again.”

The Apollo Lunar Surface Journal records Aldrin setting his watch before the EVA timeline reached 108:56. Its commentary says he wore it on his suit sleeve and apparently started its stopwatch function at 56 minutes after the hour. In a later discussion on the journal page, Aldrin recalled that he believed Armstrong had left his watch inside and that his was the only watch on the lunar surface. Armstrong said he could not remember, but thought leaving one inside was logical given the mission-timer situation.
Those records establish the Apollo-era backup and EVA timing context. They do not establish that Aldrin’s later three-watch habit began as an Apollo procedure.

How does the 2023 appearance compare with an earlier one?
A three-watch appearance reported in 2017 involved a different arrangement, according to Hodinkee. It described a modern Speedmaster on Aldrin’s right wrist and a combined 18k yellow-gold De Ville Chronoscope and X-33 on his left. That account is distinct from Time+Tide’s 2023 identification of three separate Omega models.

Why an odd number could help
Aldrin’s reported explanation describes a simple majority check: if two watches agree and one differs, the outlier is easier to identify. With only two watches showing different times, the wearer has no majority to indicate which one is wrong. The quote explains the idea, but the secondary report does not establish whether Aldrin uses a particular procedure or relies on the watches for a specific task.

Where the Speedmaster fits in the story
Omega’s corporate history says all three Apollo 11 astronauts were equipped with Speedmasters and that NASA declared the Speedmaster “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on 1 March 1965. That is useful historical context for the watch family. NASA’s own mission record, rather than the company history, is the stronger source for what the crew said about carrying a wristwatch as a mission-timer backup.
