He considered the fourth-generation redesign, but its thinner case and improved bracelet connection did not outweigh its sharper, more polished styling for him. That is a personal preference—not proof that the older watch is objectively better.
The Planet Ocean Hodges bought
Hodges’s watch is the gray boutique edition, reference 215.32.44.21.01.002: a 43.5 mm stainless-steel case with brushed surfaces, a sandblasted gray dial and a rubber strap. He valued its matte, tool-like appearance and its resemblance to the Planet Ocean silhouette he already associated with the collection. His account describes a design choice, not a controlled test of fit, accuracy, durability or value. Fratello’s history of the 2016 Planet Ocean refresh places this watch in the third generation.
What changed with the new Planet Ocean?
Omega announced the fourth generation on November 18, 2025, marking 20 years of the Planet Ocean with a complete redesign. Its release introduced seven watches across three watch heads, with strap or bracelet options; that is the launch announcement, not a statement of the collection’s current catalog. Omega’s launch announcement frames the redesign as a new direction for the line.
| Comparison | Third generation | Fourth generation at launch |
|---|---|---|
| Case size and thickness | Standard sizes were 39.5 mm and 43.5 mm. Fratello’s historical overview lists thicknesses of 14.5 mm and 16.5 mm respectively; Swatch Group’s 2025 comparison gives 16.1 mm for the standard third-generation case. | 42 mm diameter and 13.79 mm thick, according to Swatch Group’s 2025 release. Hodinkee rounds the thickness to 13.8 mm and reports a 47.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement. |
| Case and bracelet character | Hodges preferred its brushed, matte, tool-watch feel. He also criticized the older bracelet’s end-link tabs. | Sharper case surfaces and polished center links give it a more polished look to Hodges. He said its end-link connection was improved. |
| Helium escape valve and date | The generation retains the helium escape valve, a long-standing Planet Ocean design feature. | Omega removed the helium escape valve. Hodinkee reports that launch models had no date display; that does not establish whether all future variants will omit one. |
| Movement and certification | Fratello identifies METAS Master Chronometer certification as a major upgrade of the 2016 generation. | Swatch Group specifies calibre 8912, METAS approval and a 60-hour power reserve. |
| Water resistance | 600 m, as indicated in the collection’s name and historical coverage. | 600 m, according to Swatch Group’s release. |

Why Hodges preferred the older design
For Hodges, the difference was less about which watch had more modern engineering than about what the design communicated. The third generation’s matte dial and brushed surfaces read as practical and familiar to him. The fourth generation’s sharper lines and polished bracelet center links pushed it toward a more luxurious appearance than he wanted from a Planet Ocean.
He saw a genuine improvement in how the new bracelet meets the case, while disliking its polished center links. His criticism of the old end-link tabs and praise for the new connection are his judgments about design; they are not evidence of a measured durability difference.

The helium escape valve is similarly a matter of priorities. Omega removed a feature that had helped define the Planet Ocean for 20 years. Hodinkee notes that the valve’s absence is practically immaterial for ordinary owners, though its presence has symbolic appeal to enthusiasts. A buyer can prefer the older watch’s recognizable silhouette without needing the valve for everyday use.
Where the fourth generation makes a stronger case
The new model is substantially thinner by Swatch Group’s figures: 13.79 mm versus 16.1 mm for the standard third-generation case in the company’s 2025 comparison. It is also 42 mm across, between the earlier generation’s standard 39.5 mm and 43.5 mm sizes. Those measurements make the new watch worth considering if case thickness is a priority, but diameter and thickness alone cannot establish how a watch will fit a particular wrist.

The newer generation also brings calibre 8912, a stated 60-hour power reserve and METAS approval. Those are concrete specifications, but they do not make the third generation obsolete: the 2016 refresh already brought METAS Master Chronometer certification to the range. The comparison is between two certified generations, not a modern watch and an uncertified predecessor.
At launch, Hodinkee reported a U.S. price range of $8,600–$9,500 for the new models. That is a 2025 launch-price report, not a verified current price or live quote. Current retail pricing, stock and the condition of any pre-owned example need to be checked at the time of purchase.

How to choose between the generations
- Start with dimensions. Compare the exact reference’s case size and thickness, then try it on if possible. The 42 mm fourth generation is not automatically a better fit than either earlier size.
- Decide which finish you prefer. Choose between the earlier model’s more matte, brushed character and the redesigned watch’s sharper surfaces and polished bracelet center links.
- Check the details that matter to you. The older generation keeps the helium escape valve; Hodinkee says launch fourth-generation watches lacked a date. Verify the configuration of the exact reference rather than assuming every future variant will match the launch models.
- Compare the actual movement and condition. Both generations have METAS credentials, but the fourth-generation launch model’s calibre 8912 and stated 60-hour reserve are distinct specifications. For a used watch, assess the individual example and its condition.
- Price the specific watch, not the generation. The available launch-price report does not establish today’s new or pre-owned market price. Check current offers for the exact reference before deciding.
The reason this purchase makes sense for one buyer
Hodges bought the 43.5 mm gray third-generation Planet Ocean because its visual identity felt closer to the tool watch he wanted. The fourth generation answers different priorities: it is thinner, has a redesigned bracelet connection and updates the collection’s design. Whether those changes are worth choosing depends on your preferred look, fit and feature set—not on a universal ranking of old versus new.
