Price had stopped him in 2015; a new-old-stock steel example later changed the equation for him. This is his personal purchase story, not a current price guide or a comparative test.
Why the watch stayed on his mind
In 2015, Stolk traveled from Amsterdam to Brussels to see the Geophysic collection in person. He liked both the Geophysic True Second and the Universal Time, with the world-time model making the stronger impression. But, as he put it, “The reason I didn’t buy the Geophysic Universal Time when it came out 10 years ago was the price.” He reports a launch price of €14,600; that is a historical figure, not a current market valuation.
Years later, while looking for a travel watch to fill a gap in his collection, he came across a new-old-stock steel example at what he considered an attractive price and bought it. He does not disclose what he paid. The Geophysic collection was discontinued about four years after its 2015 introduction, according to Stolk’s account, so his purchase was of remaining stock rather than evidence of current availability.
What made the Universal Time the right travel watch for him
A world-time display he could use
The dial combines a map with a 24-hour ring to show 24 time zones at once. Stolk describes the ring moving in sync with the hour and minute hands when the display is set; the local hour hand can then be adjusted independently, forward or backward, without changing the minutes. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s period catalogue likewise describes setting a city time and adjusting the hour independently.

That arrangement gave Stolk a practical reason to choose the watch for travel: it could show local time while retaining a view of the wider world-time display. The dial’s map and ring also gave the watch a distinctive appearance that appealed to him.
Deadbeat seconds with a mechanical movement
Jaeger-LeCoultre calls the complication “True Second”; it is also known as deadbeat seconds. Instead of sweeping continuously, the seconds hand advances in distinct one-second steps. Stolk liked the visual effect and says it helped him set the watch accurately to the second. He notes that the ticking hand might look like quartz to an untrained observer, even though this is a mechanical watch.

The movement details he appreciated
Stolk was also drawn to the Gyrolab balance wheel, refined movement finishing, and solid-gold rotor described in his account. Those details complemented the watch’s unusual seconds display: for him, the appeal was not just the visible complication but the mechanics behind it.
Proportions that worked for him
He found the steel case well proportioned. The manufacturer catalogue gives its diameter as 41.6 mm; Stolk reports a thickness of 11.84 mm and a lug-to-lug length of 49.5 mm. Those latter measurements are his account rather than specifications independently confirmed in the period catalogue cited here.

What the steel reference offers on paper
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2016–2017 catalogue lists the steel Geophysic Universal Time as reference 810 84 20. Its listed specifications are:

How it fits into his collection
Stolk names the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 GMT SBGE285 “Mist Flake” as his first, and for a time only, candidate for a travel-watch role. He does not present a side-by-side test or a full value comparison, so his eventual choice is best understood as personal preference rather than a verdict that one watch is better. The Geophysic’s world-time display, True Second mechanism, movement details, and dial were the combination that won him over.
What this story can—and cannot—tell a prospective buyer
Stolk’s experience explains why he bought this particular watch; it does not establish today’s resale price, the condition of any watch currently offered, or the cost or availability of service. The launch price he reports and his undisclosed purchase price should not be treated as a guide to present value.

Lug width alone does not guarantee that every strap will fit: end shape, strap length, and clasp width may also matter. The catalogue lists an alligator strap, but does not establish the fit or availability of a particular replacement.
Anyone considering a pre-owned example would need to assess that individual watch’s authenticity, condition, service history, completeness, and seller protections. Stolk’s new-old-stock purchase does not verify the state or provenance of other examples, and his story does not identify a current seller.
