His October 2021 story is a personal account of that choice—not a general buying recommendation—and his later ownership update adds a practical footnote: the watch stopped ticking in summer 2024 and went in for a battery replacement and cosmetic touch-ups.
The case caught his attention before the SBGX341 did
Stolk’s starting point was the Grand Seiko Quartz GMT SBGN023. He admired its angular case, but its busier dial and bezel, along with the price, did not convince him to buy it. Later, photographs of the SBGX341 shown at a Grand Seiko event in Paris brought the case he liked together with a cleaner design. In his October 27, 2021 account, he described the watch as having an “angular modernity that honors a traditional form.” Read Stolk’s original purchase story at Fratello.
Why the white-dial SBGX341 won him over
- Angular case: Its muscular shape was the feature that had first drawn him to the SBGN023, now in a less visually busy watch.
- Brushed and Zaratsu-polished surfaces: Stolk liked the contrast between the case’s finishes, which gives the robust design a more refined character.
- Simple dial and restrained color: The matte white dial and orange-red accents offered the cleaner, more legible look he preferred over the GMT’s busier presentation.
- 40 mm size: Stolk cited the watch’s proportions as part of its appeal. His 2021 article reports a 40 mm case diameter, 44 mm lug-to-lug length, and 11.65 mm thickness; these are the article’s reported dimensions, not a current product-listing verification.
- Quartz with a point of view: He appreciated the practical specification and regarded the 9F movement as an interesting expression of Seiko’s quartz heritage.
The decision was not just a spec comparison. Stolk described the unexpected path from admiring one case to finding the white-dial version as “watch karma”—his own shorthand for a fortunate coincidence, not a claim about the watch itself.
What the 9F61 and tough-watch specification mean
The SBGX341 is a quartz watch, not an automatic. Stolk’s 2021 article identifies its movement as the 9F61 and reports 40,000 A/m magnetic resistance, a screw-down crown, and 200 m water resistance. Those resistance figures are the specifications reported in that article; they have not been independently confirmed here against a currently hosted SBGX341 product page.

Grand Seiko’s current official Caliber 9F61 specifications, accessed October 4, 2026, state accuracy of ±10 seconds per year, approximately three years of battery life, and a hacking function. These are movement-level specifications, not a guarantee of the accuracy or remaining battery life of an individual used watch. The same official page lists the SBGX353 among 9F61 models; it does not establish that the SBGX341 is currently offered at retail.
What his ownership story says about battery service
In a follow-up published December 23, 2024, Stolk said he had bought the SBGX341 in October 2021 and that it stopped ticking in summer 2024. He had its battery replaced and cosmetic touch-ups performed; he reported that his regional service center also handled Zaratsu polishing. The watch returned looking fresh, and he said it remained one of his favorites. That is one owner’s experience, not evidence of a typical service interval, cost, or outcome. Read his 2024 ownership update at Fratello.
Grand Seiko’s 9F operating instructions explain that the battery installed at purchase is intended for factory performance checks and that replacement is chargeable even during the guarantee period. A watch’s actual remaining battery life therefore depends on when its battery was installed; the approximate three-year movement figure is not a promise that a newly purchased or second-hand watch has three years left.
Availability and the price in his story
Stolk’s October 2021 article said the SBGX341 had appeared in Japan around the end of 2020 and that selected units were allocated to the United States and Australia. He quoted a historical US boutique price of $3,700 at that time. Neither the allocation account nor that price establishes current availability or pricing. Grand Seiko’s current 9F61 page names the SBGX353 rather than the SBGX341, but that does not rule out finding an SBGX341 on the secondary market. Verify the model, condition, seller, and current price before buying.

Why the purchase made sense to him
Stolk did not present the SBGX341 as a universal answer for anyone seeking a tough quartz watch. In 2021, he said he had not owned it long enough for an in-depth experience review and called their relationship a honeymoon. His explanation was more personal: the case design he already liked, a calmer white-dial execution, refined finishing, and a quartz movement with a strong connection to Seiko’s history came together in one watch. The later service story extends that account, but it remains his experience rather than a durability verdict.
