In Fratello’s 2021 review, the black-lacquered version paired that layout with a 37.7 mm steel case, a hand-wound movement and reported 200 m water resistance. Those are historical details for the reviewed configuration, not confirmation of current specifications or availability.
What is a California dial?
A California dial mixes Roman numerals above the center of the dial with Arabic numerals below it. On the 4512, that familiar arrangement gives a practical-looking field-watch design a more graphic, immediately recognizable face. Worn & Wound describes the layout as “California style with Roman numerals on top, and Arabic on the bottom.” Worn & Wound’s 2022 introduction explains the TXD version’s arrangement.
What the reviewed 4512 offers
Fratello’s July 2021 review describes a black-lacquered dial in a 37.7 mm stainless-steel case, 11.3 mm thick. The reported specification list includes a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a solid case back, hours, minutes and seconds, and 200 m water resistance. These figures apply to the configuration covered by that review; they should not be read as a current product listing.
| Specification | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 37.7 mm (Fratello, 2021) |
| Thickness | 11.3 mm (Fratello, 2021) |
| Movement | Hand-wound STP1-11M; 28,800 vibrations per hour and 17 jewels (Fratello, 2021) |

Fratello’s 2021 review presents a notably capable specification set for a watch whose appeal is also strongly visual. Reviewer Jorg Weppelink praised the balance and said it was enjoyable to wear; those are his impressions, not the result of independent testing reported here.

How the California TXD differs
The 4512 California TXD is a distinct 2022 variant, not simply another name for the black-lacquered watch reviewed in 2021. Its dial uses alternating black and white enamel sectors. Serica’s history page says the complexity of the two-tone enamel process led to production in “very small numbers,” but gives no unit count.
| Detail | 4512 California in Fratello’s 2021 review | 4512 California TXD in Worn & Wound’s 2022 introduction |
|---|---|---|
| Dial | Black lacquer | Alternating black and white enamel sectors |
| Movement | STP1-11M | Soprod P024 M |
| Reported reserve | 45 hours | 40 hours |
| Edition context | Reviewed 4512 configuration | Serica describes production as “very small numbers”; no unit count is stated |
| Historical price | €690 review-time price | €575 announcement-time price |
The movement and reserve figures come from separate publications and dates, not a contemporaneous head-to-head test. The TXD price was reported at its March 2022 announcement, alongside an expectation of deliveries that June; neither that price nor delivery forecast establishes present availability. Serica’s official history documents the TXD and the brand’s field-watch lineage; Worn & Wound’s announcement reports its technical details and launch-era price.

How it wears and what to know about straps
Worn & Wound’s 2020 production review gives the 4512 a 20 mm lug width and notes that it can also be worn with leather or NATO straps. That width gives owners a straightforward way to change the watch’s look, but check the specific watch’s lug and attachment fit before buying an aftermarket strap.
The Bonklip bracelet is a defining part of the watch’s character. Worn & Wound describes it as lightweight, flexible and finely adjustable, while noting that its distinctive feel will not suit everyone. The same review reports an STP1-11 movement with a 45-hour reserve, hacking seconds and stated accuracy of ±6 seconds per day. That accuracy is the publication’s report about the reviewed configuration, not a current manufacturer guarantee or an independent measurement. Fratello later labels its reviewed movement STP1-11M. Worn & Wound’s 2020 review covers the bracelet, strap options and movement.

Is the 4512 California currently available?
The available official history and reviews establish the 4512 as an earlier Serica field-watch reference, but do not establish whether a new 4512 California is currently for sale, its current price, or its secondary-market value. Serica’s history documents later field-watch references, including the 6190 and 7505. Treat €690 for the reviewed 4512 and €575 for the TXD as dated historical prices, not buying guidance.
For its 2020 review, Worn & Wound names Joseph Bonnie as the Bonklip provider and reported standalone availability at that time. That does not establish current stock. Likewise, a historically documented bracelet or strap option should not be assumed to remain available now.
