Snoopy appeared on an OMEGA Speedmaster because the watch became associated with the Apollo 13 emergency, and OMEGA received NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award in 1970 for its contributions to space exploration. Decades later, the Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary model turned that history into a commemorative design. The award and the later watch are connected, but they are not the same event.
How a Speedmaster became part of the Apollo 13 story
Apollo 13’s crew faced a critical return journey after an onboard emergency. In a 2020 Space.com report, commander Jim Lovell recalled that the spacecraft clocks had stopped and that the crew needed to time an engine burn. He said they used the Speedmaster worn by command module pilot Jack Swigert.
“When the spacecraft clocks stopped, that’s when we required the Speedmaster,” Lovell told Space.com.
Lovell also recalled using the watch to time a 14-second engine burn while the crew used Earth as a visual guide. This is Lovell’s recollection as reported by Space.com, not a quotation from a NASA mission report. Space.com’s account of the Apollo 13 Speedmaster story says the interview was released by OMEGA.

Why NASA astronauts gave OMEGA the Silver Snoopy Award
In 1970, NASA astronauts presented OMEGA with the Silver Snoopy Award in recognition of the company’s contributions to space exploration, including the Speedmaster’s role in Apollo 13. Space.com reports that astronaut Thomas Stafford presented the award on October 5, 1970. OMEGA and Swatch Group also identify 1970 as the award year.
OMEGA quotes Stafford describing his own use of the watches: “I carried two OMEGAs in space. One on Mission Elapsed Time and one on Houston time.” The award recognized OMEGA’s broader contribution to spaceflight; it was not the later 50th-anniversary watch or a prize presented when that watch was released. OMEGA’s model page connects the award to its space-exploration contributions and the Speedmaster’s Apollo 13 role.

How the anniversary watch commemorates the story
On October 12, 2020, Swatch Group announced a Speedmaster tribute marking 50 years since the award. The official model is the OMEGA Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary, reference 310.32.42.50.02.001. Its Snoopy details and Apollo 13 references make the mission history visible in the watch itself.
- Snoopy medallion: A Snoopy medallion sits at 9 o’clock on the silver Ag925-engraved dial.
- Apollo 13 trajectory: The blue nylon strap has the mission trajectory embossed on its lining.
- Animated caseback: When the chronograph is used, an animation shows Snoopy travelling around the far side of the Moon.
- Watch construction: The 42 mm stainless-steel case has a blue ceramic bezel and houses the manually wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
These are design tributes to the mission and award history; they do not mean this model was aboard Apollo 13. Swatch Group described the watch as non-limited production and announced a five-year warranty at launch. Those are launch-era statements, not confirmation of current availability, price or warranty terms. Swatch Group’s October 2020 announcement gives the launch context.
