The Code 11.59 is worth appreciating on its own terms: a round-looking watch built around an octagonal case middle, a double-curved crystal that shifts the view of the dial, and a collection that ranges from everyday selfwinding models to exceptionally complex chiming watches. Audemars Piguet revealed the line in 2019; its design rewards a closer look beyond the first impression.
What makes the Code 11.59 different?
At a glance, the Code 11.59 reads as a round dress watch. Look at its case from the side, however, and the architecture becomes more involved. Audemars Piguet describes a three-part construction: an octagonal middle sits between a round caseback and a thin, round bezel. The contrast is structural rather than merely decorative, letting the silhouette stay restrained while the case reveals a more angular identity from other viewpoints. AP also highlights the stylised lugs, which connect the case elements with a distinctive profile.
The double-curved sapphire crystal adds another layer. Its shape changes how the dial appears as the watch moves or is viewed off-axis, so the face does not look quite the same from every angle. AP describes this as part of the collection’s optical effect. The gold logo in relief is another carefully considered detail: the company says it is made through a galvanic growth process. How the collection has evolved
AP revealed the Code 11.59 in 2019, describing it as a platform for unconventional forms and a wide range of aesthetic and technical possibilities. That is the manufacturer’s framing, but the collection’s development gives it substance: the line has expanded across case sizes, materials, dial treatments and complications rather than remaining a single, fixed dress-watch formula.

A notable update arrived in 2023. Audemars Piguet introduced the first stainless-steel Code 11.59 models, in 41 mm, alongside 38 mm models aimed at smaller wrists. It also established an embossed ripple-pattern dial as a signature treatment. Tiny holes in the relief pattern interact with light, adding texture while preserving legibility. AP credits the dial’s development to its team working with Swiss guilloché craftsman Yann von Kaenel. The brand says the process from stamping to colouring takes about 1.5 months, and fitting the hands and hour markers takes approximately 45 minutes per dial; those are AP-published production figures, not independently audited timings. Small-wrist proportions and the 38 mm Selfwinding
AP’s 2026 design page presents new 38 mm Selfwinding versions in pink gold with purple or ivory embossed dials. The smaller case makes the line more approachable for wrists that may find the 41 mm models too large, while retaining the collection’s case architecture and textured dial identity. The described watches use selfwinding Calibre 5900.

For these models, AP specifies a 4 mm movement thickness, a frequency of 4 Hz and a 60-hour power reserve. These figures belong to Calibre 5900 and the models described on that page; they should not be treated as specifications for every Code 11.59. (AP’s Code 11.59 design page)
From straightforward selfwinding to high complications
The range is not limited to time-and-date watches. AP’s catalogue includes Code 11.59 references in several levels of watchmaking complexity. The contrast helps explain why it is better understood as a collection platform than as one particular kind of watch.

The progression from a simple selfwinding watch to a sonnerie is a meaningful part of the collection’s appeal. The outer design provides a recognisable frame for watches with very different purposes and levels of mechanical ambition; it is not simply a single case style attached to one movement or complication.
Code 11.59 and the Royal Oak: different design languages
The useful comparison with the Royal Oak is about character, not a contest over which line is better. The Code 11.59 places an octagonal middle inside a predominantly round outline, with the bezel and caseback remaining round. The Royal Oak, by contrast, is known for making its angular bezel and integrated-bracelet design central to its appearance. In broad visual terms, the Code 11.59 is more restrained from straight on and more revealing from the side; the Royal Oak’s geometry is more immediately legible.

Code 11.59 also offers a range that includes 38 mm and 41 mm examples and different materials, including pink gold and stainless steel in the models AP has described. The catalogue’s complications extend from selfwinding watches to perpetual calendars, tourbillons, minute repeaters and sonneries. AP’s 2026 announcement places a 41 mm Code 11.59 openworked perpetual calendar alongside a Royal Oak version using Calibre 7139, showing that the same movement family can appear in two quite different design contexts. The available official descriptions do not establish a meaningful price or popularity comparison between the collections.

Its best argument is the combination of an understated outline with details that emerge gradually: the hidden octagonal middle, curved sapphire, carefully shaped lugs and textured dials. The collection also has breadth behind that design, from smaller-wrist selfwinding watches to elaborate chiming pieces. AP Product Director Sofia Candeias has described the collection as thriving and versatile; that is the company’s own assessment, not independent evidence of public reception. Calling the Code 11.59 underappreciated would imply a consensus that the available evidence does not establish. It is fairer to say that the watch can be easy to misread if judged only from a quick frontal glance. The case construction and the spread of watchmaking inside the collection make a stronger case than any claim about how other people feel about it.
