The design began as a custom prop for Interstellar; Hamilton later adapted it into a production watch, adding a detail that was not on the movie prop.
Why the original Murph was a “Frankenstein”
Hamilton CEO Vivian Stauffer described the Murph’s origins in a 2024 interview with Time+Tide. Christopher Nolan’s team contacted Hamilton in 2013 to create a watch for the film. Stauffer said the resulting design combined elements from different Hamilton collections—a departure from the company’s usual practice of keeping each collection’s design language distinct.
The design cues came from different sources
- Case: Stauffer identified it as a Khaki Field case, finished with polished and brushed surfaces.
- Dial inspiration: He connected the dial to a watch Hamilton was making for Conservation International, in a project involving Harrison Ford and known as Team Earth.
- Hands: The watch uses cathedral-style hands.
- Strap style: Stauffer said its inspiration came from a strap on a piece in Hamilton’s American Classic Railroad collection.
“Frankenstein” is therefore a description of the design’s mixed influences. Stauffer said it was conceived as a prop, not as a watch that would fit neatly into one existing collection.
How the watch figures in Interstellar
Interstellar, released in 2014, makes time central to its plot and characters. Production designer Nathan Crowley said Hamilton was invited to create two key watch props: a pilot’s watch for Cooper and a unique watch for Murph. Hamilton reproduced Crowley’s comments in its film account, where he described the watches as significant to the story.

Spoiler: Cooper leaves his watch with his daughter, Murph. Later, the seconds hand’s Morse-code movement carries a message that helps her decipher information. The watch is not merely a character accessory; it becomes part of how the story conveys its message across time.
Is the retail Murph the same watch as the movie prop?
No. The 42mm production Khaki Field Murph is a commercial version inspired by the film prop, not the same physical watch used on set. Hamilton says the retail model carries “Eureka” in Morse code on its seconds hand, a nod to the film’s conclusion. Stauffer said that detail is absent from the movie watch.

Hamilton made the 42mm model available in 2019 after fan requests. Its published specifications include a stainless-steel case, black dial with sapphire crystal, black calf-leather strap and H-10 automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve. Those are Hamilton’s published figures for the model; they do not establish a current retail price or availability.
Murph 38mm vs. 42mm
Hamilton announced a 38mm version in 2022. The clearest source-backed distinctions are case size and the Morse-code detail; these do not establish which size will fit a particular wrist better.

The 38mm model is not simply an identical smaller replica: it omits the 42mm retail watch’s “Eureka” seconds-hand code. For a fit decision, compare the actual case dimensions and try the watch on if possible; the size figures alone cannot predict comfort.

Hamilton’s official accounts place the story in three stages: the custom watch was created for Interstellar, the 42mm Khaki Field Murph became available in 2019 after fans asked for a production version, and the 38mm option followed in 2022. The “Frankenstein” label belongs to the original design process; the retail Murph is a defined production model with its own specifications and, in the 42mm version, a film-inspired Morse-code detail.
