That is the case Brice Goulard makes in his 2016 Monochrome Watches review—not an objective measure of what every collector will find “cool.” The two white-gold versions he discusses, the 5170G-001 and 5170G-010, express that restraint differently.
What makes the 5170G appealing?
Goulard’s argument rests on a useful contrast: the 5170G is a serious mechanical chronograph, but it does not try to pack the dial with extra complications. Its two sub-registers serve the chronograph, and the watch is manually wound. There is no calendar or split-seconds function to compete for attention. In that sense, the review calls it “back to basics”—a description of its relatively focused complication set, not a claim that the watch is mechanically simple.
The appeal is also in the proportions. Monochrome’s 2016 review reports a 39.4 mm case diameter and approximately 11 mm thickness. Those dimensions help explain why Goulard emphasizes the watch’s compactness and slimness for a chronograph. They are figures reported by that review, rather than independently verified manufacturer specifications here.
5170G-001 vs. 5170G-010: what changes?
The two references share the white-gold case and basic chronograph format, but their dial details create distinct impressions. The 001 leans more traditional and detailed; the 010 is visually more open, according to Goulard.

A pulsation scale is an additional dial marking, so the white 001 has more going on around its perimeter. The black 010’s simpler track layout gives the hands and two registers more visual breathing room. Goulard favors the 010, but that is his aesthetic judgment; a buyer who prefers a more instrument-like or traditional look may respond differently to the 001. The cited review does not establish a current price difference between the references.
The CH 29-535 PS: a hand-wound chronograph at the center
The 5170G uses the CH 29-535 PS, identified in Monochrome’s review and Hodinkee’s 2013 introduction as a manually wound Patek Philippe chronograph calibre. Monochrome says the calibre was introduced in 2009 and that the 5170 family began using it in 2010; the review describes the 5170 as the collection’s first men’s watch to feature this movement. That history gives the watch a connection to the brand’s chronograph development without requiring a more complicated display on the dial.

Both the 2016 Monochrome review and the 2013 Hodinkee introduction report a 65-hour power reserve for the calibre in their 5170 coverage. Monochrome also reports a frequency of 4 Hz. These are figures stated in those historical articles, not the result of an independent test. A later Patek Philippe chronograph family, the 5172G-010, also uses the CH 29-535 PS, but its specifications should not be treated as specifications for the 5170G.
What did the 5170G cost in the historical coverage?
The prices reported in the available coverage are dated launch or publication figures, not current asking prices or a guide to today’s secondary market.

The 5170G is especially compelling for someone drawn to a classical chronograph layout and the ritual of winding a watch by hand, but who would rather avoid a crowded complication dial. The choice between these two versions comes down largely to visual taste:

- Choose the 5170G-001’s look if you prefer a white dial, baton hands and the extra detail of a pulsation scale.
- Choose the 5170G-010’s look if you prefer a black dial, leaf-shaped hands and a cleaner outer track.
- Consider the movement and proportions if your interest is the manually wound CH 29-535 PS and the dimensions reported by Monochrome, rather than additional complications.
Goulard’s “cool” verdict is most persuasive as a description of balance: the watch has an important chronograph movement and a clear two-register purpose, yet its appearance remains controlled. His preference for the black 010 follows that logic, while the 001 offers a more detailed alternative within the same basic idea.
