Smart earrings are real, but they are not yet a proven mainstream alternative to smartwatches. University prototypes have measured heart rate and temperature, an open-source ear-worn platform combines multiple sensors, and a consumer product called Lumia 2 has been reported. What remains unproven is broad adoption, long-term performance in everyday use, and whether commercial models match the research results.
Are smart earrings real yet?
Yes. “Smart earrings” can refer to jewelry-style devices or, more broadly, ear-worn electronics that sense or communicate data. Research teams have built working earring prototypes, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and its TECO group have developed OpenEarable, an open-source ear-based sensing platform. Android Central also reported the Lumia 2 consumer product in November 2025.
These examples represent different stages of development. A university prototype demonstrates that a measurement can be made under studied conditions; an open development platform lets researchers and product developers explore sensors and applications; a consumer launch is a commercial signal. None alone establishes that smart earrings are widely adopted or that their health measurements are independently validated for every buyer.
What can smart earrings track?
Heart rate
The University of Washington’s PPG Earring uses photoplethysmography (PPG), an optical method that detects changes in blood volume near the skin. The prototype was 14 mm and weighed 2.0 g. In the study described by its authors in a CHI 2025 paper, it supported 21 hours of continuous PPG sensing and Bluetooth transmission. Researchers reported valid heart-rate capture during 91.74 ± 4.84% of exercise time and 86.29 ± 2.96% of a day-long in-the-wild study. Those figures describe valid capture in that study; they are not a guarantee of accuracy or uninterrupted readings from every smart earring.

Temperature
The University of Washington’s Thermal Earring prototype weighed 335 mg, consumed 14.4 microwatts and had a reported battery life of 28 days. Researchers studied five febrile patients and 20 healthy participants, and explored temperature changes associated with eating, exercise and acute stress. The small study makes temperature sensing a promising research direction, not a basis for treating an earring as a diagnostic device or assuming a commercial model has the same battery life.
Other ear-based sensing
OpenEarable is a research and product-development platform, not simply a jewelry earring. TECO lists a nine-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), pressure and temperature sensors, inward- and outward-facing microphones, a speaker, button and RGB LED. KIT says the platform supports wireless ear-based health and safety sensing, including oxygen saturation and body temperature. The platform’s sensor list shows what developers can work with; it does not prove that a mass-market earring can deliver every listed function or a clinically validated result.

How do smart earrings compare with a smartwatch?
An earring’s location may offer access to signals around the ear and earlobe, and jewelry styling could make a sensor less conspicuous than a watch. But proximity alone does not establish better measurement. Fit, skin contact, sensor placement and movement all affect what a device can capture. A smartwatch is a more established form factor for people who already want a wrist-worn screen and controls; an earring may appeal to someone prioritizing a different location or appearance. The evidence here does not establish that earrings outperform watches overall.

How long does a smart earring battery last?
There is no single battery-life figure for the category. The University of Washington reported 21 hours of continuous PPG sensing and Bluetooth transmission for its heart-rate prototype, while its separate Thermal Earring prototype reported 28 days. These are different research devices with different sensing approaches, not directly comparable consumer-product promises. Battery life for Lumia 2 is not established by the cited launch report.

When comparing products, check what the manufacturer means by battery life: continuous sensing, intermittent readings or standby. Also check whether the estimate assumes particular settings, how often the device needs charging, and whether the charging method fits your routine.
Are smart earrings comfortable to sleep in?
The available evidence does not establish that smart earrings are comfortable or safe for every person to sleep in. A light prototype is not proof of overnight comfort for a finished product: the backing, attachment, shape, pressure on the ear and a person’s sleeping position all matter. If a device is marketed for overnight tracking, look for wear testing and product-specific guidance, and stop wearing it if it causes pain or irritation.

Where can you buy smart earrings?
Android Central reported Lumia 2 in November 2025 as customizable smart earrings with several styles, an announced price of $249 and a $9.99 monthly subscription, with initial availability reported for the United States and Canada. Those are launch details reported at that time, not confirmation of current pricing, stock, subscription terms or retailer availability. The report does not establish Amazon availability. Check the manufacturer’s current sales information and terms before purchasing.
OpenEarable is a separate open-source development platform aimed at research and product development; it should not be confused with a consumer jewelry product. Current hardware availability is not established here.

Will smart earrings become the next big wearable?
The technology has moved beyond speculation: prototypes have demonstrated heart-rate and temperature sensing, and ear-worn platforms show how multiple sensor types might be explored. A reported consumer launch is an early commercial signal. But no cited source establishes market size, adoption, category share or long-term outcomes. Whether smart earrings become a major wearable category will depend on more than novelty: they need dependable measurements, comfortable and secure fit, practical charging, transparent data practices and a clear advantage for the people who choose them.
