Wrist game—if you choose the right Montbrillant. The name covers several Navitimer variants, not one fixed specification: the standard model is listed at 38 mm, while the Edition and Datora are 43 mm and the Montbrillant 01 is 40 mm. Identify the exact reference before judging its fit, movement, dial, or value; this guide is based on published specifications, not a hands-on inspection.
What makes the Montbrillant a Navitimer?
Breitling says the Navitimer began after the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association approached Willy Breitling in 1952 about a chronograph for its members. The watch’s rotating bezel incorporates a logarithmic slide rule for calculations such as average speed, distance, fuel consumption, rate of climb or descent, and unit conversion. The Montbrillant brings that instrument-style bezel and busy dial into a family of later Navitimer watches. Its slide rule is a historical calculation aid, not a substitute for current flight-planning or navigation equipment.

“Montbrillant” alone is not enough to establish size or movement. The following figures are model-index listings, not confirmation of any individual watch; check the reference and serial information on the example being offered.

How does the 38 mm Montbrillant wear?
The standard model’s listed 38 mm diameter and 13 mm thickness make it materially smaller than the 43 mm Edition and Datora. Diameter is only one part of fit: thickness, the case’s shape, the bracelet or strap, and the wearer’s wrist all affect how a watch sits. The Edition’s listed 15.3 mm thickness is useful context when comparing dimensions, but it does not predict how either watch will feel on a particular wrist.
If fit matters, ask for clear photographs of the actual watch on a wrist and measurements of its case and thickness, then try it on if possible. Do not use a family name or a seller’s generic product photo as a substitute for checking the specific reference.

What should you check on a specific example?
- Reference: Match the case and movement to the reference: standard A41330/A41030/H41330, Edition A48330/H48330, Datora A21330, or 01 AB01301. Similar names do not make their specifications interchangeable.
- Dial and crystal: BreitlingSource says sapphire crystal appeared on standard-model examples after 2008, and a dial with double concentric white rings appeared in 2009. - Condition and paperwork: Request photographs, reference and serial details, available purchase or service records, and an assessment of current water resistance. A production date or seller description cannot establish the present condition of a pre-owned watch.
- Movement and winding: Confirm whether you want the standard model’s listed Breitling 41 movement, the Edition’s manual winding, or another variant. A watch that looks similar may have a different mechanism and daily routine.
What are its limits in water and daily use?
The listed 30 m water resistance is not a reason to treat a Montbrillant as a watch for swimming or other aquatic activities. The Breitling Montbrillant 01 Limited manual says Navitimer cases are not suited to aquatic activities and cautions against operating the crown, pushpieces, or bezel while the watch is damp. What servicing should a buyer plan for?
The Montbrillant 01 Limited manual recommends regular service every two years, a complete overhaul about every five years, and an annual water-resistance test by an authorized Breitling agent. It notes that gaskets can deteriorate through exposure to factors such as perspiration, cosmetics, perfumes, and dust. Wrist Game or Crying Shame?
The Montbrillant is wrist game for someone drawn to the Navitimer’s distinctive slide-rule design who is willing to shop by exact reference and verify condition. The standard model offers a listed 38 mm case; the larger Edition and Datora, the manual-winding Edition, and the 40 mm 01 each make a different proposition. Whether a particular watch is a good buy depends on its identity, fit, condition, documentation, and service record—not the Montbrillant name alone.
