The original 2004 IWC Aquatimer Cousteau Divers, reference 3548, is a distinctive 42 mm steel diver with a blue dial, orange accents and an internally rotating bezel. Its limited-edition design has real appeal, but buying one today comes down to wrist fit, the condition of the individual watch and evidence of recent servicing and pressure testing—not its historic depth rating alone.
What is the original IWC Aquatimer Cousteau Divers?
The watch discussed here is the first Cousteau Divers, introduced in 2004 as reference 3548. A specialist listing describes a run of 1,953 pieces, a stainless-steel case measuring 42 mm, sapphire crystal, blue dial, orange-and-white hands, date, twin crowns and a blue rubber strap with signed buckle. Its automatic IWC caliber 30110 is based on the ETA 2892-A2. Watches of Switzerland / Analog:Shift’s listing links the limited run to Cousteau’s first Red Sea expedition; Antiquorum’s auction catalogue also identifies the 1,953-piece edition.
Reference suffixes are not consistent across secondary sources. Fratello identifies the first model as IW354803 and says IW354806 may also apply; a 2005 TimeZone owner review calls it IW354806. Check the papers and case of the specific watch rather than assuming every listing uses the same suffix. Fratello also connects 1,953 to the publication year of The Silent World; these are explanations for the edition number, not evidence of present-day value or collectability.
Why its design still stands out
The Cousteau Divers combines a deep-blue dial with orange details and two crowns, one of which controls the inner unidirectional dive bezel. That arrangement gives it a different look and operating feel from a diver whose timing bezel rotates on the outside of the case. The early-2000s styling is specific rather than universally versatile: the orange-and-blue contrast is a central part of the watch’s identity, not a discreet detail.

The reference is reported to be water-resistant to 1,000 m / 100 bar by Fratello and the TimeZone owner review. No official original-ref. 3548 specification page was identified, so treat that as a reported historic specification. It does not establish the water resistance of a decades-old example now.
How it differs from later Cousteau-named Aquatimers
IWC used Cousteau-related names on later Aquatimers too. Those are different references, not alternate specifications for the original 3548. IWC’s official past-collection pages show the distinctions:
| Model | Case and type | Water resistance | Movement and reserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Aquatimer Cousteau Divers, ref. 3548 | 42 mm steel automatic; inner unidirectional bezel | 1,000 m / 100 bar reported by Fratello and TimeZone; not confirmed here by an original-model IWC specification page | IWC caliber 30110, based on ETA 2892-A2; reserve not stated in the cited sources |
| Aquatimer Chronograph “Cousteau Divers” IW378101 | 43 mm chronograph | 12 bar | Caliber 79320; 44-hour reserve |
| Aquatimer Automatic Edition “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” IW329005 | 42 mm automatic with SafeDive bezel | 30 bar | Caliber 30120; 42-hour reserve |
| Chronograph Edition “Expedition Jacques-Yves Cousteau” IW376805 | 44 mm chronograph | 30 bar | Caliber 79320; 44-hour reserve |
The later models’ figures come from IWC’s respective official pages; they do not independently verify the original ref. 3548’s specifications.

Fit the actual watch
The published case diameter is 42 mm, but diameter alone cannot tell you how a particular example will sit on your wrist. Try it on if possible, and assess the individual watch’s lug span and thickness as well as the case diameter. No fit test is established for this model here.

Establish condition and safe use
Ask for service records and recent pressure-test documentation, and check that both crowns and the internal bezel operate correctly. The old depth rating is not proof that a used watch remains sealed. If you intend to dive with it, have a qualified watchmaker or service provider pressure-test that individual watch before use.
Confirm originality and completeness
The original blue rubber strap and signed buckle are described in specialist material, but a strap or buckle in a listing should not be assumed original. Confirm that components fit the exact reference and ask what is included. Current official replacement-strap availability is not established.
Judge the price from current evidence
No dependable current valuation is established here. In a 2020 article, Fratello described one €4,000 asking example as watch-only, dirty, and in need of a strap and service. That was one dated asking price—not a completed sale or a current market benchmark—so it is not enough to judge today’s offer.
Wrist game or crying shame?
Wrist game if you want the original’s unusually vivid IWC diver design, have checked that its size suits you, and can verify the specific watch’s condition and service history. Crying shame if the appeal rests mainly on its historic depth rating or limited-edition status while its fit, originality, or ability to pass a pressure test remains uncertain.
