Wristify was a 2013 MIT student prototype, not a watch or a replacement for air conditioning. Its thermoelectric bracelet sent controlled hot or cold pulses to the wrist, aiming to make a person feel more comfortable so a building might need less heating or cooling. The prototype showed that idea was technically possible; it did not prove large-scale energy savings.
What was Wristify?
Wristify was a bracelet developed by MIT students for the 2013 Making And Designing Materials Engineering Competition (MADMEC), where the team won the $10,000 first prize. It was designed to monitor skin and surrounding air temperature, then apply tailored heating or cooling pulses at the wrist.
The goal was personal comfort: adjust the wearer’s thermal sensation rather than change the temperature of an entire room. That makes Wristify a wearable comfort prototype, not a conventional watch and not a device that cools a building.
How did the Peltier wrist cooler work?
Thermoelectric pulses and sensing
The prototype combined thermoelectric heating and cooling with temperature sensors, automated controls for pulse intensity and duration, and a custom copper-alloy heat sink. MIT reported that the team found a temperature-change rate of at least 0.1 °C per second was needed for users to feel several degrees warmer or colder overall. The final prototype reached rates of up to 0.4 °C per second and operated for up to eight hours on a lithium-polymer battery, according to MIT’s account.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The principle is localized thermal stimulation: the wrist is thermally sensitive, and a rapid, small temperature change there may influence how comfortable the person feels more broadly. That is a change in perceived comfort, not evidence that the device changes the body’s core temperature or cools the whole body in the same way as air conditioning.
What the prototype evidence does—and does not—show
MIT’s report describes an engineering prototype and the team’s observations about how it felt. The available evidence does not establish results from a large, independent field trial. The reported pulse rate and battery runtime are prototype figures, not a guarantee of performance for later products or every wearer.

Could Wristify save millions in U.S. energy costs?
The team’s rationale was that people might feel comfortable without changing a building’s thermostat as much. In MIT’s 2013 account, co-inventor Sam Shames said space heating and cooling accounted for 16.5% of U.S. primary energy consumption. That is a historical figure attributed to the team and MIT in 2013, not a current measurement supplied here.
MIT also reported the team’s estimate that a building could save roughly 100 kilowatt-hours per month if it avoided a thermostat adjustment of just 1 °C. This was a team estimate for that scenario, not a measured result from widespread use of Wristify. It does not establish millions of dollars in verified U.S. savings: that conclusion would require evidence about adoption, actual thermostat changes, energy prices, and performance in real buildings.

Can a personal wrist cooler replace air conditioning?
No evidence cited here shows that Wristify can replace whole-building heating, ventilation, or air conditioning. It was intended to affect an individual’s comfort while the surrounding space remained at a different temperature. MIT’s reported energy-saving idea depends on whether that personal comfort actually leads people to change building settings; the prototype figures alone do not demonstrate that outcome.
There are also engineering trade-offs. A Peltier element needs electrical power to move heat and a way to reject that heat. A later wearable-cooling patent describes high energy requirements, short operating times, comparatively long charging times, and the possibility that close skin contact can be uncomfortable. Those are general design cautions, not proof that every device has the same performance.

Is Wristify the same as Embr Wave?
No. MIT’s commercialization account says the Wristify concept became Embr Wave, a later wearable design. MIT described Embr Wave as a “personal thermostat” planned for commercial release, with a flat aluminum top, a blue-to-red display, and a thermoelectric tile that touches the skin. Wristify is the student prototype; Embr Wave is its later product development, not the same device.
The official Wristify FAQ says development involved iterative prototyping and empirical observations of how the prototype felt, followed by work on human thermal perception. That history explains how the concept developed, but does not by itself establish the later product’s independent performance, warranty, weight, charging time, or effectiveness for a particular person.

Can you buy an Embr Wave wristband on Amazon?
Current Amazon availability is not established by the available sources. MIT’s commercialization account describes a planned commercial release, but does not confirm present-day stock at Amazon or another retailer. Check a retailer’s current listing directly before relying on availability, and distinguish product descriptions from independently documented cooling performance.
For any thermoelectric wrist wearable, useful comparison points include heating and cooling rate, runtime, heat-rejection design, skin-contact comfort, control method, charging time, weight, warranty, and independently documented results. No evidence cited here verifies that Wristify or Embr Wave has delivered national HVAC savings or can replace air conditioning.
