The Zodiac Astrographic is worth the money if you want its floating-disc display and are willing to judge a vintage example’s condition closely before buying. The display is the reason to buy it. Its conventional specifications are modest and differ from one reference to another, so the condition of the discs and crystal, along with the paperwork, will usually decide whether a particular watch is good value.
How the Astrographic’s display works
Zodiac’s official history dates the Astrographic’s launch to 1969. It describes floating hour and minute hands and a small red “moon” that circles the dial while counting the seconds (Zodiac Watches, “Zodiac Legacy,” official history page, undated). Understanding that layout matters more than any single spec, because it is what separates this watch from a conventional three-hand design.
The three discs
The hour, minute and seconds indications sit on translucent discs stacked at different heights rather than on hands that sweep over a fixed dial. Hodinkee’s 2019 hands-on review describes the arrangement like this:
- Hour disc: the lowest disc, closest to the dial.
- Minute disc: sits above the hour disc.
- Seconds indication: the top layer, the small red marker that moves around the display.
Because each indication lives on its own layer, the display reads as a set of stacked markers rather than a set of hands. That is also why condition problems in the discs are so visible: any haze or debris between the layers affects how the whole display reads. The original’s red dot became a red-planet motif on the 2019 anniversary edition, which Hodinkee notes when describing that reissue.

Where the design comes from
Fossil Group’s 50th-anniversary announcement places the original in the space-race era and says the display used floating disks instead of conventional hands. Zodiac’s creative director, Ryan White, is quoted in that announcement: “This was a watch that debuted in 1969 at the height of the space race. There was so much optimism during that time in the world, and the team at Zodiac wanted to bring something to life that was truly unique.” That is the brand owner’s account of the design context. It is not evidence of any technical link to a space programme, and it should not be read as one.
Vintage original and 2019 reissue compared
The 1969 original and the 2019 anniversary reissue share the floating-disc concept, but they are separate executions. Their published measurements come from individual reviewed watches, so the table below shows what each source reported rather than a full catalogue.

Read the reissue as a modern watch that uses the original display idea, not as a specification stand-in for vintage pieces. The table’s values should not be transferred to other examples of either generation.
Movements and what they tell a buyer
STP 1-11 and the 44-hour reserve
Zodiac says the STP 1-11 has a 44-hour power reserve and has been used across models ranging from the Astrographic to the Super Sea Wolf (Zodiac official legacy page, undated). That is the brand’s statement about the movement family, not a guarantee for every Astrographic.

Caliber 88D in the reviewed vintage example
Fratello identifies the caliber 88D in its reviewed vintage Astrographic as a high-beat movement running at 36,000 beats per hour. A specialist dealer listing for one serviced reference, 882-853, also reports the 88D and a 40 mm diameter (Laurent Fine Watches, 2019). That listing corroborates the caliber for that individual watch only. Do not assume the 88D in every vintage Astrographic without a reference-specific record.
STP 3-13 in the 2019 reissue
Hodinkee identifies the STP 3-13 as the movement of the 2019 anniversary reissue. The two generations therefore do not share a movement in the reviewed examples, so a buyer comparing them should treat their running characteristics as separate questions.

Is it worth the money?
The answer depends on which of three buyers you are.
- You want the original display and can verify condition. A vintage example is the only route to the 1969 design. It is worth paying for when the discs are clear, the crystal printing is intact, and the caliber and service history are documented.
- You want the display with a modern build and a known movement. The 2019 reissue fits this buyer. Its run was limited, so it is not a common purchase, and its 43 mm case suits some wrists better than others.
- You are unsure about condition or documentation. Walk away from a vintage example that lacks clear photographs of the discs and crystal, or that will not confirm how it runs and sets. Buying a problem disc or crystal costs more than the watch’s appeal is worth.
Checking a vintage example before you buy
- Request straight-on and angled photographs of all three discs. Look for whether the discs remain transparent.
- Check for particles beneath the crystal. Dust or other debris trapped between the disc layers is a condition problem, not a cosmetic one.
- Look for circular scratches across the display. Scratches that cross the discs are visible in the reading area, not just on the surface.
- Examine the crystal printing. In the reviewed vintage example, the logo and minute track were printed on the underside of the crystal (see the crystal section below).
- Ask for the caliber identification and service documentation. Confirm the watch runs and sets correctly for that exact reference.
- Confirm the setting method for that reference. Fratello reports that the date on its example advanced when the crown was pressed. Treat that as a feature of one watch until the seller confirms how the particular example behaves.
- Consider a qualified vintage-watch specialist for inspection. The discs and printed crystal are the parts most likely to need expert eyes.
Why the crystal is the costly part
In the reviewed vintage example, the logo and minute track were printed on the underside of the crystal. That makes the crystal part of the display’s appearance rather than a simple protective cover, and a generic replacement may not preserve the original look. Fratello reported in 2021 that genuine Zodiac replacement was difficult to source at that time. That is a reported sourcing difficulty from that date, not a current inventory fact.

Fratello also quotes the watchmaker Richard Askham on polishing the crystal: “Considering how much time the entire polishing process took, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have endless patience.” That is Fratello’s reproduction of Askham’s comment, not an independently verified interview with him.
Fit and wear
Fratello found the 40 mm vintage example comfortable on the wrist, while noting its unusual case shape. Hodinkee describes the 2019 reissue as slightly top-heavy on the wrist. These are individual impressions from two reviewers. Compare case diameter, thickness, case shape and lug span against your existing watches, and try the watch on if you can, especially with the bracelet or strap you intend to use.
