The most defensible watches tied directly to the 1920s setting of The Great Gatsby are the early Cartier Tank and the Rolex Oyster. The evidence does not support a definitive ranking of ten named watch models from the decade, so this guide separates documented period watches from design cues and modern interpretations that evoke the era.

What counts as a “Great Gatsby–era” watch?

The Great Gatsby is set in the 1920s, but a watch that looks Art Deco is not automatically a watch made in that decade. Cartier’s own sources distinguish the Tank’s creation in 1917 from a dated 1920 Tank in its collection; a museum account dates the Tank wristwatch to 1919. Rolex dates the Oyster to 1926. Those are useful historical anchors, not proof of a definitive decade-wide top ten.

The ten entries below are therefore a curated style guide, not a ranking of ten verified 1920s models. The first two are documented period watches. The remaining entries describe design directions to look for in later vintage watches or contemporary interpretations; they are not claims that each direction corresponds to a specific named model from the 1920s.

Two documented watches from the period

1. Early Cartier Tank — documented 1920 object

Cartier’s collection identifies a Cartier Paris Tank wristwatch dated 1920, made of platinum and gold with a sapphire and leather strap, and describes it as one of the very first Tank wristwatches: Cartier’s Tank collection. Cartier’s style history says Louis Cartier created the Tank shape in 1917: Cartier’s Tank history. A museum exhibition account dates the Tank wristwatch to 1919: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cartier exhibition. These dates refer to different historical claims—a design, a model chronology, and a dated surviving object—so they should not be collapsed into one introduction date.

#1 Best Overall
RAYMOND WEIL Toccata Ladies Quartz Watch - Gold Plating, Mother of Pearl Dial, Diamond and Roman Numeral Indexes (5925-P-00995)
  • This new quartz model adopts a sophisticated art deco appeal with an elongated rectangular face and slim 6.25 mm case. This is our shallowest case design to date which gives a very sleek profile to this watch.
  • The design is available in five variations that alternate either in two-tone, gold-tone and stainless steel. The face comes in combinations of black roman numerals on a crisp white dial or alternating gold & diamond indexes on a mother-of-pearl face.
  • The sapphire crystal window is framed by a beveled rectangular case. The tiered design gives this watch an illusion of depth without the thickness. The watch is completed with our logo’s signature upon the crown.
  • Unlike the classic round ladies’ toccata, this watch manages to nail a refined, retro aesthetic all the while remaining true to the Swiss craftsmanship and inspiration behind the collection.
  • Following in the footsteps of the great composers, toccata promotes RAYMOND WEIL’s Swiss horology while respecting the tradition and heritage handed down from generation to generation within the family company.

For a Gatsby-era look, the Tank’s defining appeal is its shaped, rectangular case and restrained dress-watch character. An early surviving example is a rare vintage object; a current Tank or Tank-style watch is a later interpretation, not an original 1920s watch.

2. Rolex Oyster — introduced in 1926

Rolex dates the Oyster to 1926 and describes it as its first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch. Its historical account explains that the sealed case used a screw-down back and bezel, along with a screw-down winding crown: Rolex, 1920–1929. This is a different kind of period statement from the Tank: the Oyster’s documented significance is its case construction as well as its round, practical design.

Tissot SRV, Swiss Quartz, 21.80mm, Silver Dial, Women’s Watch
  • Case Size: 21.80 mm, Band Width: 12 mm, Case Thickness: 7.25 mm
  • Quartz movement, Stainless Steel bracelet
  • Water-resistant up to a pressure of 5 bar (50 m / 165 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.

Rolex also says swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore an Oyster during her 1927 English Channel crossing, which lasted more than ten hours, and that the watch remained in working order. That account is Rolex’s own historical narration: Rolex, 1920–1929.

Eight Gatsby-era design directions to consider

These entries are visual categories, not additional verified 1920s model names. Use them to assess later vintage watches and modern designs without mistaking resemblance for provenance.

3. A rectangular dress watch

Look for a long, clean case outline and a simple dial if you want the visual language associated with the Tank. Confirm the watch’s maker, reference, and date independently; a rectangular case alone does not establish that it is from the 1920s.

4. A round, restrained dress watch

The Oyster provides a period example of a round wristwatch. A later watch with a similarly simple round case can suit the era-inspired brief, but its date and construction must be assessed on their own merits.

Tissot SRV, Swiss Quartz, 21.80mm, White Mother-of-Pearl, Women’s Watch
  • Case Size: 30 mm, Band Width: 12 mm, Case Thickeness: 7.25 mm
  • Swiss Quartz Movement, 316L stainless steel case
  • Water-resistant up to a pressure of 5 bar (50 m / 165 ft)

5. A small formal watch

For a dressier interpretation, consider a compact watch that sits neatly under a cuff. Treat size as a styling preference, not as evidence of age: the cited historical sources do not establish a universal 1920s size standard.

6. An Art Deco–influenced dial

Geometric markers, balanced symmetry, and clear contrasts can evoke Art Deco styling. Those traits are visual cues, not reliable dating tools; later watches can use them too.

7. A shaped case beyond the rectangle

Cartier’s historical design context includes Tonneau, dated 1906, and Tortue, dated 1912, as well as the Tank, dated 1919, in the museum’s account: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cartier exhibition. These earlier shapes help explain the era’s interest in non-round cases, but the source does not establish that they were introduced in the 1920s.

8. A slim watch on a leather strap

A leather strap can give a modern or later vintage watch a formal, period-conscious appearance. Cartier’s 1920 collection object is documented with a leather strap, but that single example does not prove every era-evoking leather-strapped watch is historically faithful.

9. A modern heritage reinterpretation

A current watch from a brand’s heritage collection may borrow a case shape or design vocabulary from an older model. Check the product’s actual model date and description: “heritage” or “inspired” does not mean the watch itself was made in the 1920s.

10. A contemporary Tank-style homage

A less costly modern watch may echo the Tank’s rectangular silhouette without being made by Cartier or belonging to the original period. Describe it as Tank-style or Tank-inspired only when that accurately reflects its design, and do not present it as an authentic vintage Cartier.

How to choose between an original and an interpretation

What matters most Best fit What the evidence establishes
Documented connection to the 1920s Early Cartier Tank or Rolex Oyster Cartier documents a Tank object dated 1920; Rolex dates the Oyster to 1926.
Distinctive shaped-case styling Tank and later rectangular interpretations The Tank is a documented period anchor; a later lookalike is not thereby a period watch.
Case-construction innovation Rolex Oyster Rolex describes its 1926 Oyster as waterproof and dustproof, with a screw-down back, bezel, and crown.
Era-inspired appearance without a period claim Later vintage or contemporary designs These can evoke the look, but the cited sources do not establish particular additional models, prices, or present-day availability.

How to verify a watch before buying

  1. Separate the design date from the watch’s date. A model may have an early design history while an individual example was made later. Cartier’s 1917 design history and its dated 1920 collection object illustrate why those are different claims.
  2. Check the exact identity. Ask for the maker, model or reference, and evidence supporting the claimed production period. A rectangular case or Art Deco dial is not authentication.
  3. Distinguish original from reissue or homage. A modern Tank, heritage reinterpretation, or Tank-style watch may suit the look, but should be described by what it is rather than passed off as a 1920s original.
  4. Assess the individual vintage watch. The historical sources establish design context, not any particular seller’s condition, originality, service history, price, or stock. Those questions require documentation for the specific watch.

A useful design detour: Rolex’s Submarine was not the Submariner

Rolex describes the Submarine as a 1922 attempt at a waterproof watch. It used a second outer case and had to be opened each day for winding, which weakened its seal: Rolex, 1920–1929. This is a design-development example, not the later Rolex Submariner; the names should not be confused.
