1. Give the update a few days
Apple Support says: “If you notice that battery life has decreased after updating your Apple Watch, wait a few days and then check again.” Background tasks may affect battery life after the watch becomes usable. Do not assume the drain is temporary or that every watch is affected.
2. Check recent charge history
Open Settings > Battery on the watch to review the recent charge graph and last-charge information. Compare similar periods of use rather than judging from one unusually poor day. Note whether the watch was using cellular service, Wi-Fi, GPS, or a workout.
3. Check Battery Health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and review Maximum Capacity, which indicates capacity relative to when the battery was new. Battery condition and usage both affect runtime. If the watch says service is needed, or you suspect the battery needs replacement, contact Apple Support.

4. Keep the paired iPhone nearby
Apple says Apple Watch is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone using Bluetooth. Keep the devices reasonably close when practical. If battery life improves when they are together, connectivity may have contributed to the drain.
5. Prefer Wi-Fi to cellular when away from the iPhone
When your paired iPhone is not nearby, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks. If you have a cellular model, use a known Wi-Fi network when available and consider whether poor signal coverage is contributing to the drain.

6. Review Background App Refresh
Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn off refreshing for apps that do not need frequent updates, or disable it globally if you accept the trade-off. Background App Refresh uses power. Complications on the active watch face may still refresh, so simplifying the face can also reduce background activity.
7. Reduce display demand if acceptable
On supported models, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On and turn off Always On. The display will no longer remain visible at a glance, but you can still raise your wrist or tap the screen to see it.

8. Use Low Power Mode selectively
Low Power Mode can extend battery life, but it changes or turns off some features and may delay notifications. Available controls and effects depend on the watch model and installed watchOS version. Check the explanation shown on your watch before enabling it, especially if you rely on background measurements, timely notifications, or workout features.
9. Consider weak-signal conditions
Apple notes that weak Wi-Fi or mobile coverage can increase power use. Move to an area with a stronger signal when practical. If you will be away from usable networks, Airplane Mode can prevent the watch from repeatedly searching for service, but wireless communication will be unavailable until you restore the connections you need.

10. Update within your software branch or contact Apple
Check for the latest watchOS version available for your model and follow Apple’s instructions to update. Apple’s watchOS 26 update history lists version 26.6 as including bug fixes and security updates, but does not identify it as a general battery-drain fix. If the drain continues or Battery Health indicates a service issue, contact Apple Support.

Apple says Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) recalibrate battery-capacity reporting after watchOS 26 or later. Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra do so after watchOS 26.6 or later. A changed Maximum Capacity reading may reflect recalibration; it does not prove recalibration caused rapid drain or that a particular battery problem is normal.
