Omega’s 15,000-gauss milestone and the 160,000-gauss figure describe two different things. The first belongs to the 2013 Seamaster Aqua Terra with Co-Axial calibre 8508, designed to resist magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss. The second is Swatch Group’s account of a separate concept timepiece at the Omega Museum that reportedly survived 160,000 gauss. The company did not name that concept watch or explain how it was exposed.
What does Omega’s 15,000-gauss claim mean?
On 21 January 2013, Swatch Group announced a watch resistant to magnetic fields greater than 1.5 tesla, or 15,000 gauss. The prototype was fitted in a Seamaster Aqua Terra; its movement became the Co-Axial calibre 8508, used in the Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 Gauss. Swatch Group said the prototype continued to perform when subjected to 15,000 gauss. Swatch Group’s 2013 announcement describes the product and its original demonstration.
The design addressed magnetism within the movement. Instead of enclosing it in a protective inner container, Omega used selected non-ferrous materials in movement components. The company’s descriptions include a silicon balance spring and other non-magnetic materials; the claim is not that silicon alone provides the resistance. Swatch Group’s 2014 account explains the material approach in the context of Omega’s magnetic-resistance testing.
What is the 160,000-gauss Omega?
Swatch Group’s 26 January 2023 article about the Speedmaster Super Racing says that a honeycomb dial pattern refers to “a concept timepiece on display at Omega Museum which survived extreme magnetic fields of 160,000 GAUSS.” The account does not identify the concept timepiece’s model or calibre. It also does not describe the magnet, exposure duration, test conditions, or the watch’s timekeeping before and after exposure. The company’s 2023 article is the source for the museum anecdote.

So the answer to “What Omega watch survived 160,000 gauss?” is limited: according to Swatch Group, it was an Omega Museum concept timepiece, but the published account does not say which one. It does not establish that the watch was a production model, underwent a particular certification, or represents the rating of Omega watches generally.
Why the two figures are not a like-for-like comparison
| Claim | What it refers to | What the cited account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Greater than 15,000 gauss | The 2013 Seamaster Aqua Terra with Co-Axial calibre 8508; Swatch Group’s 2014 account also describes magnetic exposure above 15,000 gauss in the Omega/METAS certification context. | A product and certification-related resistance claim. The company accounts describe the movement approach and testing context. |
| 160,000 gauss | A concept timepiece displayed at the Omega Museum, as described by Swatch Group in 2023. | A reported survival at that field strength. The model, calibre, exposure method, duration, and measured performance are not stated. |
The claims differ in what they document: one concerns a named retail model and a stated resistance threshold, while the other is a brief account of an unnamed museum concept’s reported survival. Without the concept watch’s identity and test protocol, the figures cannot be treated as comparable performance ratings.

How does METAS certification fit in?
The 15,000-gauss product claim should not be confused with a 160,000-gauss certification threshold. Swatch Group’s 2014 description concerns Omega/METAS testing above 15,000 gauss; it does not connect METAS certification to the museum concept’s 160,000-gauss figure.
In a separate 2023 description, Swatch Group says the Master Chronometer process comprises 283 steps, eight tests, and ten days. Those figures describe the company’s account of the certification process, not the exposure protocol for the concept timepiece. Swatch Group’s 2023 article discusses both the process and the museum reference, but they are distinct claims.

What the claims do—and do not—tell an Omega buyer
The named historical model relevant to the 15,000-gauss milestone is the 2013 Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 Gauss, calibre 8508. That product history does not show that buying the 2013 model, or any other Omega, provides 160,000-gauss protection. The museum statement is not a published rating for a current production watch.
Both figures come from Omega or Swatch Group accounts, rather than independent test reports in the cited material. They document the company’s claims and historical account; the available statement about 160,000 gauss does not provide enough test detail to independently assess what “survived” meant in precision or operating performance.
