Before ruling out a watch, compare its exact reference and the price you can actually pay with the features, fit, ownership costs, and support you need.
Why a universal “15 watches to avoid” list falls short
A watch can be overpriced for one buyer and worth buying for another. Someone who prizes a particular design or brand history may accept a premium that a buyer focused on movement specifications would not. The useful question is not whether a watch is universally bad, but whether its price makes sense for your priorities.
A 2025 avoid-list video names brands including Hublot and TAG Heuer, but that is one creator’s opinion, not independent evidence that either brand—or any particular model—is poor value. The examples do not establish a defensible ranking of 15 watches. Without exact references, prices, and comparable specifications, naming 15 products as watches buyers will regret would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
How to assess whether a particular watch is worth its price
Start with the exact reference and the offer in front of you. A brand reputation or suggested retail price alone cannot tell you what you are getting at your actual purchase price. Check the dimensions that matter for your intended use:
#1 Best Overall
- Capturing the daring style of Marc Anthony, one of music’s most influential artists, Bulova presents the all-new Marc Anthony Series A.
- The bold, angular silver-tone stainless steel case features brushed finishing with polished accents, a silver-tone bezel with grey accents, a flat mineral crystal, and a screw-down crown. The stunningly vibrant blue dial combines sunray texture along the hour track and a central dial with a radiant sunburst finish, complete with hands with luminescent treatment, polished indices, and a grey running seconds sub-dial.
- The dial is further accented with diamond hour markers at 1, 3, and 5 o’clock, chosen by Marc for their personal significance. Visible through both the dial aperture and an exhibition case back, the open heartbeat automatic movement features 21 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve.
- The 44mm watch has 200m of water resistance and is complemented with a matching silver-tone stainless steel bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp. Uniting Marc Anthony’s iconic music with Bulova’s proprietary technology and Bold at Heart spirit, this new men’s timepiece will keep you always within style’s rhythm.

- Movement: Identify the movement type and the manufacturer’s stated accuracy, if published. Decide whether the movement’s performance and functions suit your needs.
- Crystal: Confirm the crystal material. It is a practical durability and maintenance consideration, not a complete measure of a watch’s quality.
- Water resistance: Check the stated rating and whether it fits the activities you plan to do. Do not assume that a watch is suitable for swimming or diving based on appearance alone.
- Power reserve: For a mechanical watch, compare the stated reserve with how you expect to wear or store it.
- Fit and wearability: Look at case dimensions, lug width, and bracelet or strap options. If possible, try the watch on; specifications cannot fully predict how a case will sit on your wrist.
- Warranty: Check duration, eligibility, registration requirements, and purchase-channel conditions for the specific watch.
- Service: Find out whether service is available where you live and whether the brand publishes service prices. Include foreseeable ownership costs in your value judgment.
These checks help identify what a price buys, but no single specification settles the question. A strong specification sheet does not automatically make a watch right for you, and a preference for design or brand identity is a legitimate reason to pay more if that is what you value.
Verify warranty terms instead of relying on brand reputation
Warranty coverage depends on the brand’s rules, the model, purchase date, and sometimes registration or seller. The following official examples illustrate why you should verify eligibility rather than assume that coverage is uniform:
Rank #2
- Case Size: 39.30 mm, Band Width: 19 mm, Case Thickness: 9.75 mm
- Automatic movement, leather strap, Roman dial type, Date
- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
- Hublot: In an announcement dated April 14, 2026, the company described five years of base coverage for selected watches purchased from January 1, 2026, with a possible five-year extension through Hublotista. Confirm that the exact reference and purchase channel qualify before counting on the extension: Hublot’s warranty announcement.
- TAG Heuer: Its FAQ says non-Connected watches purchased from June 17, 2025 onward are eligible for extended coverage after registration. Watches bought from April 1, 2020 through June 17, 2025 qualify only if they contain specified manufacture movements. Check the current terms and your watch’s eligibility with TAG Heuer’s warranty FAQ.
These warranty policies do not demonstrate that the watches are good or poor value. They are reasons to read the conditions for the specific watch before buying.
What to do before you decide to skip a watch
- Write down your priorities. Decide whether you care most about fit, design, movement, water resistance, warranty, service access, or another concrete feature.
- Confirm the reference. Make sure the listing, specifications, warranty terms, and any service information refer to the same model—not merely the same brand or collection.
- Compare the real price. Use the price offered to you, not just a list price, and compare it with watches that serve the same purpose.
- Check the ownership details. Verify warranty eligibility, registration steps, service availability, and any published service charges before treating them as part of the value.
- Make the decision against your own standard. Skip the watch if its price asks you to pay for features or prestige you do not value, or if its fit and practical limits do not work for you. Buy it only if the trade-offs make sense to you.
When calling a watch “overhyped” is justified
Make the claim specific: name the exact reference, the market and purchase price being discussed, the buyer it may not suit, and the criteria behind the judgment. Explain whether the comparison concerns specifications, wearability, warranty, service costs, or personal priorities. A resale opinion alone is not a guarantee of future value, and the available evidence does not establish a statistic for how often buyers regret watch purchases or how much of a watch’s price comes from its specifications.
