A burst fade is the curved taper around the ear—not a haircut style on its own. Pair that shape with a curly top, a mohawk, a mullet, or another silhouette to get very different results. Use these 20 combinations as starting points, then show your barber a reference photo and explain how close you want the sides and how much length to keep on top and at the nape.

What makes a burst fade different?

A burst fade curves in a rounded or semicircular shape around the ear and toward the back of the head. The hair gets shorter along that curve, while the nape may be left longer. The fade describes the shape of the sides; it does not dictate what the hair on top or at the back must look like.

That distinction matters when you ask for the cut. A burst fade can accompany a mohawk or mullet, but it is not itself either style. It can also be paired with a taper, which describes a gradual reduction in hair length, or with a closer fade. The arc around the ear is the defining feature.

The styles below are combinations of that curved fade with different top silhouettes and textures, not 20 different kinds of fade. The source guide covers these pairings but does not rank them by face shape, hair type, or suitability for a particular setting. The Trend Spotter’s burst-fade guide describes the shape and its pairings.

20 burst fade haircut ideas

Short, understated silhouettes

  1. Burst taper with a Caesar: A short, forward-directed top paired with a curved taper around the ear. Ask for a restrained arc if you want the fade to read as a detail rather than the main feature.
  2. Burst fade with a buzz cut: A close, even top keeps the overall shape simple, while the curved fade supplies the contrast. Specify how close you want the sides; “burst fade” alone does not set the length.
  3. Short textured top: Keep the top cropped but leave enough length to show its natural texture. The short silhouette makes the curved section around the ear easy to notice.
  4. Low burst fade with a comb-over: A low, subtle curve can sit beneath a top swept to one side. Tell your barber whether you want a soft transition or a more visible separation.
  5. Burst fade with a slick-back: Sweep the longer top backward to contrast with the rounded fade. This pairing depends on having enough length to direct the top back.

Volume and movement on top

  1. Burst fade pompadour: Keep volume at the front and sweep it back, with the burst shape wrapping around the ear. The top’s height and the fade’s closeness are separate choices, so describe both.
  2. Burst fade quiff: A lifted, forward-focused top gives the cut movement without requiring a narrow central strip. The arc around the ear keeps the sides distinct from the styled top.
  3. Wavy top with a burst fade: Let the waves provide movement above the curved taper. The result depends on the pattern and length of your own hair, so use a photo with a similar texture as a reference.
  4. Curly top with a burst fade: Leave curls visible on top and use the fade to frame the sides. Natural texture is part of the style; the amount of length needed will vary with your curls.
  5. Afro top with a burst fade: Preserve the rounded volume of the top while tapering around the ear. Bring a reference that shows both the desired top shape and the curve.

Central strip and raised profiles

  1. Classic burst mohawk: Keep a narrow strip of longer hair through the center, with the burst fade curving around the ears. Say how wide you want the strip and whether the sides should be close to the skin.
  2. Soft faux hawk: A less defined central ridge gives a softer profile than a pronounced mohawk. The burst fade still supplies the rounded side shape, but the top can be styled with less height.
  3. Curly mohawk: Combine the central strip of a mohawk with curls left visible on top. The texture and length of your hair affect how clearly the strip holds its shape.
  4. Wavy faux hawk: Use natural wave to suggest a raised center without making the silhouette as sharp as a mohawk. The fade curve remains the same kind of detail around the ear.

Longer backs and high-contrast details

  1. Burst fade mullet: Leave length at the back and pair it with the curved fade around the ear. A mullet is a separate top-and-back silhouette, not another name for the fade.
  2. Curly burst mullet: Keep curls through the top and longer back while tapering around the ears. Bring a photo that shows how much length you want to retain at the nape.
  3. Burst fade with braids: Keep braids on top or through the longer sections, with the fade shaping the area around the ear. Explain where the braids should begin and how much hair should remain at the back.
  4. Burst fade with a hair design: Add a shaved line or design within the shorter side area. Because the design is a separate detail from the fade itself, show its placement and shape in a reference image.
  5. Long top with a burst fade: Preserve more length above the curved sides and choose how to wear it—forward, swept back, or to the side. Be explicit about the amount of length to leave.
  6. Slicked-back mullet with a burst fade: Combine a swept-back top with a longer back and the curved fade around the ear. This merges two distinct silhouette choices, so a single reference photo is especially useful.

How to explain the cut to your barber

Bring a photo that shows the curve and the overall silhouette you want. Use the name of the top style as well as “burst fade”; the latter only explains the rounded taper around the ear.

  • Point out how high or low you want the curve to sit and how rounded it should look.
  • Say whether you want the sides subtly tapered or cut close to the skin.
  • Name the top style—such as Caesar, curls, mohawk, faux hawk, or comb-over—and describe how much length to preserve.
  • Specify whether you want length left at the nape, especially for a mullet or a longer-back style.

If you are new to the cut, the source guide recommends using a professional barber or stylist experienced with it: getting a precise fade can be challenging.

Upkeep and styling

The Trend Spotter gives a general touch-up suggestion of every 2–4 weeks. Treat that as a starting point rather than a fixed schedule: hair growth and your preference for a crisp or grown-out fade affect when you want to return.

For curly or wavy versions, let your natural texture inform the styling choice. A curl cream is one optional styling product to consider for a curly top, but it is not a requirement; the right approach depends on your hair. The source guide notes that a burst fade can emphasize natural texture, while individual results depend on the person’s hair characteristics.
