Those details distinguish it from the earlier Mk1. Rolex’s launch material also specifies 100m water resistance and approximately 48 hours of power reserve; those are original specifications, not a guarantee about a pre-owned example today.
What changed on the 2016 Explorer 214270?
Rolex revised the Explorer’s dial and hands for 2016 without changing the reference number. The Mk2 has longer, wider hands than the Mk1, and its minute hand reaches the minute track. The 3, 6 and 9 numerals also gained blue Chromalight; on the Mk1, those numerals are not luminous. The hands were already luminous.
In his contemporary review, published 18 March 2016, Monochrome Watches’ Brice Goulard described the larger hands as more rational and convenient, while noting that their added visual weight reduced some of the earlier dial’s lightness. Those are his design judgments, not a universal verdict. He also wrote, “The truth is that I never notice the length of the hands in real life.” That is his personal observation, not a test result or a promise that every wearer will feel the same way. How to distinguish Mk1 from Mk2
| Detail | Mk1 | Mk2 (2016 update) |
|---|---|---|
| 3, 6 and 9 numerals | Reflective white-gold numerals; not luminous | Filled with blue Chromalight |
| Hands | Shorter and narrower | Longer and wider |
| Minute hand | Does not reach the minute track | Reaches the minute track |
The distinction is in the dial and hands, not the case or movement. Monochrome’s comparison says the two versions share the case, bracelet and calibre. When viewing a listing, use clear dial photographs to check both the lume on the numerals and the hand proportions; a seller’s Mk1 or Mk2 label alone does not show those details. What the Mk2 is like on the wrist
The larger hands give the black dial a more substantial appearance, while the luminous 3, 6 and 9 make the hour markers visible in dim conditions. The earlier Mk1’s non-luminous, reflective numerals can suit someone who prefers a less overtly sporty look; the Mk2’s glowing numerals favor low-light legibility. Neither preference makes one version objectively better.
Rolex’s 2016 product material lists a 39mm 904L steel Oyster case, flat polished bezel, three-link brushed Oyster bracelet, Oysterlock clasp and 5mm Easylink adjustment. The Mk2 therefore retains the same published case size as the earlier 214270; the visible change comes from the dial furniture and hands, not a larger case. The bracelet’s Easylink provides the specified 5mm adjustment. Rolex’s 2016 product material.

2016 specifications—and what they do not establish
| Specification | Rolex product material, 2016 |
|---|---|
| Reference | 214270 |
| Case diameter | 39mm |
| Case material | 904L steel |
| Water resistance | 100m |
| Power reserve | Approximately 48 hours |
| Precision standard after casing | Rolex Superlative Chronometer certification: -2/+2 seconds per day |
| Bracelet adjustment | 5mm Easylink adjustment |
These figures describe the model as specified in 2016. The precision standard is Rolex’s stated after-casing certification standard, not an independent timing result for every watch, and neither it nor the original water-resistance rating establishes the present performance of a used example. Condition and maintenance matter for an individual watch.
